Title: Nj
Post by: Eiksirf on July 05, 2006, 04:38:59 PM
Anyone heard what\'s going on here in NJ lately?

Gov. Corzine wanted to up sales tax from 6 to like 7.5% and democrats wouldn\'t let him. (Yay blue state)

Well he said "then I can\'t finish the budget... so I\'m stopping funding to...." and at this point, the state lottery, welfare and unemployment, atlantic city and I think the DMV are all shut down.

He\'s throwing a hissy fit and it\'s screwing with tons of citizens.

He holds meetings in his mansion and struggles to come to a resolution.

Asshat.

He shut down more than that too. He\'s a prick. Supposedly, he\'s trying to up the drinking age to like 25 or something.

The following are closed because of New Jersey\'s government shutdown:

-Atlantic City casinos
-State parks
-State campgrounds
-State historic sites
-State beaches
-Horse racing tracks
-Motor vehicle offices
-Lottery ticket sales
-Vehicle inspection centers
-State courts, except for emergencies
-Road construction
-Numerous state offices, with 45,000 state workers forced to stay home

This government hissy fit doesn\'t make any sense. This is incredibly irresponsible.

While this is true, I don\'t live in delaware.  I do a lot of shopping in delaware though.  What other states besides delaware don\'t have a sales tax?  I know florida dosen\'t have state income tax.. right?

Got me mm. And tell me for one second how closing them down is going to help matters. July is supposedly their busiest month, too.

unless the casinos are that good at filtering money past the local tax collectors.

hell, one of the major casino operators in the country offered the city of pittburgh a brand new 340million dollar arena for the penguins if they were given a slots license (not even a full gamblinb license, just slots).

That\'s really really sad.  Makes NJ seem like one of those backwards southern states, and this is coming from a guy who\'s lived in NJ, GA, & AL, among other places as well.

This would never happen in VA ;)

a shame really,..i remember the gov\'t being closed down quite a few times tho when i used to live there...jersey is and can be a really good place to live...it\'s just the corruption of politicians and others that are just mucking up the state...if i could\'ve afforded to buy a decent house up there at a decent price, i\'d still be livin there, i loved bein\' close to the shore and under an hour away from manhattan.

Well, we have a 6% state tax. But to fix this mess, Corzine got his way and they\'re raising it to 7%. From the extra money he\'ll make now, he\'s giving part of it back as some kind of half-assed property tax relief. But either way, we\'re paying more to a government seemingly intent on giving us less.

I was talking to my boss yesterday at work and he said that this 7% sales tax will bite us in the ass in the end. Apparently, a lot of people from New York come into NJ to buy clothes and taxed stuff because their tax was 7% and they saved money by coming to NJ. Now they have no reason to come to NJ so we\'re losing that revenue. I dunno.

You would have thought with the amount of money they were making on taxes, they would have been able to fund a war that would have whooped us 10x over ;)
