Ok, so I\'m gonna have to sell the FTO pretty soonish cause its getting old and I\'m in need of a new car anyways. Im looking at either;
Nissan 350z Touring (Track outta my budget) OR
Mazda RX8
Both second hand of course but both will still have at least some kind of retained warranty. So, what would you get? Anyone have any experience with either of these cars?
Im heavily leaning towards the 350, but its only got two seats (so does the FTO but at least the FTO had that little rear seat thingo which could squeeze a small child into). The RX8 is cheaper but not as fast, and doesnt look as hot. Im also alittle paranoid about rotary.
Choices choices.
-
If I were you, I\'d get a Mazda Miata. They\'re kinda sporty and look super cute with their little top down.
-
You mean an MX5?
no.
-
For something very practical yet sporty I\'d look at the new Mazdaspeed 3.
http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/Features/articleId=116119
Only $21k, less expensive and more powerful than the Civic SI.
A Z will turn more heads but it\'s a dog. As much as I love Nissan a 3,300 lb. sports car with an N/A V6 won\'t cut it for me. My co-worker just bought one and although it looks great, I wouldn\'t drop $30k for it.
The RX-8 burns too much gas to be slower than a 350z or GTO.
-
aww, c\'mon! I think you get a sweater vest and free Cher CD with purchase.
-
Mazda RX8
-
The Mazda RX-8 would be a mistake. They are underpowered, particularly for a car that is heavy and almost sedan-like. Last I heard, evidence indicated that the car did not make even the meager official horsepower specs, so Mazda probably overrated it. Also as THX mentioned, this engine burns way too much fuel for such low power output.
The Z is not a bad car, but I guess it\'s a matter of personal taste. I disliked them from the beginning, and now I have to look at them everywhere. The Japanese Mustang. Certainly you can say with certainty that the build quality is not up to the standard of other competitive manufacturers, including Honda & Toyota.
Why don\'t you consider a used Subaru Impreza or a Civic Si?

Convertible Beetle.
-
Why would you want to \'squeeze\' a small child into your car... I thought the cops told you to stay away from playgrounds. :)
Anyway, I like both cars. But the Z takes the cake.
-
whelp bein the fact that my 1st two cars were nissans, i gotta roll with the Z...it\'s faster and looks a wee bit better than the rx-8.
-
Ive also been looking at Chrysler Crossfires, but I dunno, too many choices. I like Chryslers, dads got a 300C which he\'s pimped up but I dunno, the Crossfire is just an old as SLK and apparently the transmission is like a dog.
GTO\'s are everywhere here (Monaro), too big for my liking and they certainly like a drink.

or just get another rice burner.
-
if you also like chrylser, there\'s another car on their roster that i\'m feelin\' a bit...it\'s the charger...i\'ve seen quite a few of them sitting on some nice set of rims...and you don\'t even have to go to aftermarket to get them...the dealer i went to had some of the nicest sets you could order with it...well it might be called the dodge charger, but dodge/chrysler are basically the same thing...
-
Dun think they are available in Australia yet.

ha, today my buddies and i were stopped at a light and one of these things pulled up. i figured the 35 year old tool driving it couldn\'t hear me so i mutter some shit to my friends about how much of a homo you would have to be to drive a car like that. but he heard me and we thought he was going to get out of his car, then he noticed there was 4 of us, in a ram 1500 that would have rolled over his car like a matchbox car, and he just flicked me off and drove away.

Yeah, always good to demoralize those faggy Beetle owners...

That would be funnier if it we\'re for the fact that rice is grown in fields and paddies of standing water where a riding lawnmower cannot operate.

Put water skiis and a propeller on there and problem solved. If you turn the mower blades and get rid of the deck, that could act as the prop. Then just put it on like a bouyant bottom and there you go :)

Here\'s another reason NOT to buy an RX-8:
From the current issue of Automotive News
http://www.autonews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060821/SUB/60819010&SearchID=73254565918563 (http://www.autonews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060821/SUB/60819010&SearchID=73254565918563)
Mazda expects to recall RX-8s
Automaker: Engines failing vacuum test must be replaced
MONTEREY, Calif. -- After suffering a black eye from disclosing that it won\'t count RX-8 owners\' opinions in its internal customer-satisfaction scores, Mazda says it may have to replace the engines in many of its flagship sports cars.
The voluntary recall of all 2004 and 2005 vehicles, and some 2006s, is expected to be announced this week or next. It involves damage to the catalyst resulting from oil leaks in the RX-8\'s rotary engine.
Any engine that does not pass a vacuum test must be replaced, said Robert Davis, head of product development and quality at Mazda North American Operations.
Engines prone to failing the test are mostly in hot climates and use synthetic oils.
Mazda also will check each RX-8\'s battery and starter, which tend to fail in cold climates.
"We\'re going to give these cars the white-glove treatment," Davis said. "We would rather replace the engine than have the dealer crack them open."
Davis would not disclose the projected failure rate of the engines or the cost to replace them.
Mazda has a remanufacturing center in North Carolina that will rebuild faulty engines and return them to service.
The recall comes after a video Webcast by two dealers who attended the July 11-13 National Dealer Advisory Council meetings in Newport Beach, Calif., was leaked on the Internet.
In the video, dealers said problems with the RX-8 were unfairly lowering Mazda customer-satisfaction scores.
Mazda informed the dealers that RX-8 owners would continue to be surveyed, but that the responses would not factor into dealer customer-satisfaction scores.
Mazda has issued service bulletins on such trouble spots as squeaky brakes and engine flooding.

nice bump. i actually just bought a 2000 maxima se 5spd. it was either fix the a/c, brakes, and audio system in my current car or start from scratch with a newer body style, better interior, and less scratches on the paint.

i\'m getting maxima jaded yes haha, but in all honesty nothing\'s better for the money. What else can I haul co-workers in at lunch for ~$8k and still get some "hey, nice car bytch" comments?
bought the other two maxes at 117k and 137k respectively. I used them to devliver pizzas when i was in college. first one was auto and the tranny failed after i started modding at 170k (silly me). 2nd one was stick and still runs fine, but has some nagging problems as described above. this next one has 93k on the clock and is really clean on the inside with a leather interior too.
congrats on the audi gman, post pics if you can. i forget who else has one on here, but he\'s in a constant rivalry with vid :)

nice whip thx...:fro:...i also see that with each car, you\'ve also upgraded the vehicle *year wise*....now your next upgrade should be either the 350z, or the sexy g-35..:D....for me i\'m gonna try to upgrade to the g-35 after i trade the lex...but like i\'ve always stated, you can\'t go wrong with nissans!..:thumb:

Not a pic by me but this is the same exact car, same color but of course, it never looks this good in real life as it\'s stuck in traffic most of the time (at least we\'re comfy):

My dad used to own a 1987 Maxima, the old classy boxy one. Very elegant and it lasted just under 200,000 miles until he sold it. I used to own a 1989 Sentra Sport Coupe XE, the 2door razor back version. That lasted well past 200k. About 50k was used to deliver Domino\'s Pizza when we still had the old 30 minute garrantee. :D
I used to fly by cops at 60 mph (at a school zone) and they\'d leave me alone coz they always got $2 pizzas from us (any size, unlimited toppings).

I hate big trucks. I don\'t see the point of them. There are so many kids at SMU that drive huge trucks that rise like four feet off the ground and I mean, its the god-damn city!
Anyways, I\'m getting a new car too!! My previous baby has been giving me a lot of trouble lately and I want a new car anyways. I\'m looking around and I don\'t want any kind of ricer.(Honda, Toyota...)
What would you recommend for about 25000. I\'m looking at VW R32 with about 20000 Miles on it. It\'s 2004(obviously) and it\'s very lovable! I don\'t know about buying a NEW car. I don\'t want to be THAT much in debt. That\'s for later after I graduate :)
This is the one I\'m looking at right now.

I\'m not much of a Euro-gear head so would you guys know the potential of such a car and it\'s cost. I know I want a cold-air maybe heads but what else could I do with it. Other than turbos(which are expensive...maybe later) I was looking at an Audi TT but they are way too...bubbly and I heard that is VERY expensive to tune them and stuff.
What do you guys think?
BTW that new Challenger is very sexxxy. I might have to go for that instead of the Camaro.

Thanks, man! What year and model is yours?
Mystiq, do NOT buy a VW. They have the most expensive maintenance record than any other car I know of since they constantly have problems. I\'m around a lot of car enthusiasts and trust me on this. Unless you\'re a mechanic who like to work with cars, fine. But if you don\'t have the time or money to maintain a lemon car, don\'t buy a VW.
And just to be stereotypical :p , if Subarus are for lesbians like me, VW\'s are favorites of the ghey. :)

I like WRX\'s, but they aren\'t 350hp. Are you looking at a modded one?
Either way, the LAST thing you need in college is a hefty car payment. I\'d look at something more economical but you do your thing. I know the under 25 croo thinks differently when it comes to finances.

Nah, I\'m getting a USED WRX. About 16K and my montly would be around 250 and my dad offered to help. He doesn\'t like any kind of imports though. Because he "can\'t work on them".
The one I\'m looking at is a modded one with Carbon Fiber, Cold air and some other stuff.
I\'m looking at another one with a dropped in STI engine with an upgraded turbo. I don\'t know about the horsepower on that one.
BTW, it ISN\'T a "rice burner"
I like THIS one alot:

And
A REAL STI...not many mods though and I\'m saving it as a last resort.

Hey those prices aren\'t that bad. You may have to read up on some Scoobie forums to see about their reliability. I think one of our Euro members is hardcore into those, goes to big meets and everything.
If you get it I hope you enjoy it, and don\'t do anything stupid like wrap it around a tree. (https://psx5central.com/community/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fforums.maxima.org%2Fimages%2Fsmilies%2Fshift.gif&hash=8c69756847ae770af7ea200a789a8ced0a6b074c)

I have been going around different forums reading up on them. They all claim to have excellent reliability and they have around a six year average in terms of needing a big repair. Not to shabby. My current car needed a big repair almost every other month.
I\'m going to love it like I\'ve never loved before.
-
You have a strange outlook on several things. First, a Subaru is not a "rice burner" ???? I guess you\'re saying a Honda is, but a Subaru isn\'t? I don\'t understand your definition. I\'m pretty sure both they\'re both built in Japan.
Second, you seem to favor cars that have already been modded. To me that indicates a greater liklihood the car has been beaten on and the owner might be hiding some problems. That is why modded cars typically sell for the same or less than a perfectly stock equivalent. If reliability is your priority, you should stay as far away from modded cars as possible.
Listen to wisdom: At your age you need a car that will be headache free. Find one that has no modifications, or very mild ones, like a strut tower brace and exhaust. If you buy a car where the previous owner tinkered with the turbo system, you have NO IDEA what you\'re getting into.
A REAL STI...not many mods though and I\'m saving it as a last resort.
http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.jsp?car_id=200423501&dealer_id=577540 (http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.jsp?car_id=200423501&dealer_id=577540)
Finally, that is not a REAL STI. Subaru never sold the STi in the United States with bugeye headlights. The owner doesn\'t represent it as an STI, he just stuck an STI badge on it. That is a modded WRX. By the way, he installed a front mount intercooler. I would stay away from it.

The term rice burner or rice car can mean different things, based on the context of its use: * Most of the time it refers to automobiles (usually low-cost factory standard) that have the appearance of a customized / high performance car, but possibly with little or no functional modifications, such as improved engine, suspension or brakes. This is the most common use of the phrase and is the one the rest of this article deals with.
---that is my definition. I understand most people refer to them as Hondas and stuff, which I do sometimes, but my definition has a greater scope. A "rice burner" can be a mustang with a body kit for instance with a v6 engine.
Also, last time I checked the Subaru is Autralian.
As far as that fake STI. I figured it was badged. The engine doesn\'t even say "sti" for godsakes. I was going to use that against the owner to see if he would drop the price, but now that I think about it, it would be pretty embarrising to drive around with a wrx with fake badges.
I understand the modded problem. Which is why I really like the first one. The mod\'s are good but minimal. The taillights are a major badass factor. All he put in it was a good cold air, new brakes, clutch and flywheel(which is good for a manual) and carbon fiber. Not too shabby.
The grey one though has a dropped STI engine with an upgraded turbo. I haven\'t really looked into that one but I\'m going to ask the owner about the upgrade and probably take it to a good mechanic to have him take a look.
I also found this one...
http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.jsp?car_id=204024729&dealer_id=58015381&model=IMPREZ&lang=en&start_year=1981&certified=&search_type=both&distance=300&make=SUB&min_price=1&address=75211&advanced=&end_year=2007&max_price=20000
It\'s pretty sweet with the Cobb upgrade. Which is a good high quality upgrade for subarus. I really like everything else he upgraded which is pretty normal and not too many engine tweaks.
I think the black one is a better deal though. Just something about that black car....

Subaru is the automobile division of the japanese company Fuji Heavy Industries, Ltd. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fuji_Heavy_Industries
They may build cars in Australia for the Australian market, I have no idea. The WRX sold in the United States is built in Japan.

Damn it! Well, I will never succumb to honda and toyota!! NEVER!!
From what I have researched, the EVO VS. WRX crowd are complete different animals from the Honda and the Celica crowd.

As a Subaru owner, mainly it\'s because Evo and WRX owners tend to be a little older than your average Civic Si owner. Also, these cars range between $23,500 (WRX) to $32,000 (Evo and STi).
It takes some years driving experience before you can drive these monsters, as well as Cored\'s S2000. AWD cars tend to be a little tricky, particularly the Subarus as they can either understeer or oversteer - depending on where you have the weight distribution going and how you brake, shift and throttle.
The Evolution....well, I\'m suspicious of Mitsu\'s reputation. But company aside, the Evo has a hardcore jolting suspension system. It drives like a go-kart with lots of power. But whereas the WRX and STi is refined in comparison, this car will make you feel like a race car driver. Careful though, it oversteers a lot easier than the Subarus. I like oversteer....but you better be prepared not to use the brakes while in one.
