Title: Uniforms
Post by: Paul2 on September 05, 2006, 02:05:40 AM
Should students wear uniforms to school?

I don\'t see a reason why not, as long as they were comfortable. It\'d be pretty lame to dress kids up so stupid that they were self conscious of it.

But I don\'t think it\'s necessary, either.

below high school level?  yes

in high school?  no

kids need to learn self-expression

Most kids self-express by dressing just like everyone else they know.

However, I know of some private schools who have absolutely egregious prices on their uniforms and comes across as nothing but a way to make even more money off of the students\' parents. Particularly when a school has a uniform for every season, and then variations for sports and whatnot.

i had uniforms in high school. Wasnt that bad. Just a plain polo shirt (any color) and any plain pants except those dickies that have the side cell phone pocket..not sure why. I just wore regular dickies.

as for if public schools should? i dont really think so. But if they do enforce it, i wont care.

99% of schools over here have uniforms anyway, I hated mine. :(

All the schools I went to never require to wear uniform, and I am happy I don\'t have to wear them.  But the junior high school that I used to went to now require students to wear uniform, but thanks goodness I don\'t have to wear them when i was still a student in that school.

Imagine having to wear them on hot sweat day, eh...I think students perform better in school on the clothes they feel comfortable on than wearing uniforms...

i think kids will feel more comfortable when they can\'t wear a 400$ outfit, and a few other kids can.

uniforms is just another way to put kids of all demographics closer to the same level

My high school was very loose even with the dress code they had. It was never enforced so people wore low cut shirts and shit like that.

I think uniforms are stupid as are dress codes.

I have a tshirt that says LEGALIZE.

No pictures of marijuana, paraphenilia, leafs or anything else - apparently it wasn\'t appropriate and I had to wear it inside out all day long. Bs.

(e) but even you admit that it was about pot. I  guess I don\'t care - you\'re entitled to free thought, but you could argue it\'s distracting which is a big reason some people want uniforms.

Depends on the uniform. I know a girl that had to wear uniforms to her private high school and she looked alright. the skirts were kinda long and the shirts made you rely on your imagination. now the porno type school uniforms that girls wear make them look cute ;)

I was 18 when I wore the shirt in highschool

Who cares if it was about pot - I can vote, I should be able to express myself. I had a big discussion (rather me being bitched) for weathign a shirt like that.

I say fuck \'em.

well think of it this way.. if pot was legalized then you couldn\'t wear provocative   shirts riddled with teen-angst.

Then maybe it would be cool to illegalize drugs so you can say f*ck the gubment once again.

So how does that affect their edjumacation? If they are going to sit in class and talk about fashion instead of paying attn. to the lesson plan they are going to do it whether they have to wear a uniform or not.

As far as the original question....prek-8 yes... HS no

I think some of you guys are trying to turn uniforms into something worse than it really is. Europe and Asia have been using uniforms in their schools even into college. Last I read, American high school students are among the dumbest in the industrialized world.

which has shit to do with clothing. uniforms IMO dont promote individuality. On the other hand they can promote discipline which is why I think they should be worn below the HS level.

Of all the school level that needs the most discipline, it would be high school.

They need it as well, but id rather promote individuality.

You still haven\'t explained what a uniform has to do with ones ability to learn.

A dumbass in street clothes is still gonna be a dumbass in a uniform

I think it has to do more with young teen boobies.

EDIT: sweet delicious boobies

Not that I made such claims, all I said was that students are trying to be runway models.

I did attend private schools that required us to wear uniforms. And also I attended one year of public school (10th grade) where none was required.

For the sake of argument, I\'ll share what I experienced:

Everyone talked about fashion trends (both uniformed and non uniformed schools)....but those that wore crappy clothes to school tended to be more of the "talk of the minute" and I think, that made them feel inferior becuase they just didn\'t have (or couldn\'t afford) the latest fashion. At the private schools, though we talked about fashion, it wasn\'t as frequent as with the public school.

I couldn\'t care any less if we had uniforms or not. I did notice that I didn\'t have to worry about what I was going to wear at the private school as that was already taken care of. :) At the public school, you\'d sometimes be made fun of if you wore the same clothes within a two week span. I can see how that mockery can affect some students.

What I did notice is that school rivalry was far more intense between different uniformed students. Almost like a "my school is better than yours" attitude.

Now....the cultural difference in Asia is that smart students were not picked on like here in the US. :D

I never said you did, I just asked a question and you didnt answer it..so I asked again.

If it isn\'t a brand name label..they will still be made fun of for being poor when something else comes up like cell phones..psp\'s..pda\'s...going out somewhere etc..etc..etc..

We made fun of kids who wore the same uniform combo all the time in grammer school. No different than street clothes. Everyone is expected to change their clothes.

Not saying you, but some people have this notion that uniforms have secret learning abilities or something..lol

like i said dumbass students will be just that no matter what they wear. I didnt let my focus in school be disrupted by who was wearing what. Unless i was looking up a skirt or down a blouse....which is a universal problem between street and uniform. :)

Heh! Private schools tend to spew out better educated students than public schools. So some people will say "It must be the uniform!"

Right.

Gimme Air Jordans and believe me, I\'ll fly too.

Yes they do. Its the quality of teachers they hire, the programs, ex.cir. that the parents pay for.

It\'s more or less a class issue.
