Title: what are you using for waxing your car?
Post by: mm on September 06, 2006, 06:40:30 AM
my new jeep is black, and having a hard time deciding what wax to use.
i\'ve been reading about Turtle Wax ICE is supposed to have great results for the amount of work.

i am not trying to spend hours doing this, i want something i can apply and buff off with a cloth 15 minutes later.

Oh man there are so many theories on this.  If you read the wash & wax section of many automotive forums, it can get really weird.  Some people are very obsessive.

I\'m lazy, and the air quality in Los Angeles is awful, so to me it\'s not worth the effort to apply 10 coats of 3 different products over 19 hour period.  In the past I bought a number of different Zaino products, but right now I\'m only using one thing:

Meguiars NXT Generation Tech Wax
http://www.meguiars.com/?liquid-car-waxes/NXT-Generation-Tech-Wax (http://www.meguiars.com/?liquid-car-waxes/NXT-Generation-Tech-Wax)

It provides a nice looking finish but it doesn\'t last as long as other hardcore products.  It\'s easy to use.  You can definitely remove it 15 minutes later if the air is dry enough.

My mistake..it is a meguiars spray wax.

After it rains..you can just wipe anything off (very easily) with a dry cloth. and it returns to post-wax shine. I used it on my old black neon.

zaino is good stuff too..forgot about that.

Don\'t wax your new car yet. Give it atleast a year and half before you do. That coating is good for at least that long. Waxing it will remove that.

Yeah...you\'re right. Sorry for the mix up. But why wax clear coat? It\'s good for about a year and half before you really need to start waxing.

dood...lay off the crack..clear coat is good MUCH longer than a year and a half even on an econo-car.

wax isnt a clr coat substitute but rather an enhancement

Just going by what I\'ve heard. Clear coat gets scratched and sometimes hazy from gritty sponge (if people aren\'t careful). The wax does enhance the shine and fills in the scratches. i never said that wax is a clear coat substitute. Quit making assumptions...again.

Which is why you dont use dirty or gritty sponges..who in their right mind would when waxing or washing a car?????

I didn\'t make a dumbass statement. I\'ve seen people wash dirty cars without properly rinsing their sponges and they don\'t notice that there\'s now fine sand or dirt on it. Then they proceed to swirl more suds (and dirt) on to their cars.

I use two buckets when I wash my car, one has the car wash soap and the other is just water. The one with water if for rinsing and ringing off the excess dirt and not putting it back into the soapy bucket.

Clear coat gets damaged from road debris, salt, acid rain and of course, the rain and sun. Don\'t read too much into wax companies about waxing your brand new car as soon as you buy it. Of course they\'d want you to do that.

Wax applications have many purposes.  They are protective, but they also add a visual enhancement to the finish.  If you take two brand new cars of the same color, then apply a wax to one of them and simply wash the other, I guarantee you will be able to tell the difference.

By the way, you might want to consider buying a "grit guard" for your bucket.  It\'s a mesh that sits in the bottom of the bucket to prevent your cloth or sponge from reaching the bottom where the sediment collects.  Meguairs sells one version:

hmmm...learn something new everyday eh?..don\'t feel bad gman...i also thought that you weren\'t really supposed to wax your car for about a year,...when i first purchased my 89 240 sx when it was new, i didn\'t wax that thing for about a year, because the factory finish was so good...i didn\'t know much about waxing a car tho, i just used turtle wax, and as soon as i waxed the whole car, i would go right around and take the wax off....what i couldn\'t understand was how people would ride around for hours in their car with the wax still on their vehicle, the wax had to be hard as stone when they tried to take it off...

^^^good lookin\' out....i\'ve peeped out this auto body shop not too far from the crib, and they look like they do some decent work, i seen this mustang that came there with a smashed front end and within a couple of weeks it was finished parked in front of the place and it looked pretty good, granted i didn\'t have time to have a close up inspection, but from the road, the paintjob looked flawless...i just hope they don\'t charge me an arm and a leg...
