Title: Sony reacts to Microsoft\'s HD DVD & 1080p announcement
Post by: Paul2 on September 21, 2006, 04:45:36 PM

With Microsoft\'s announcement of the HD DVD Xbox 360 pricing and its 1080p High Definition movie capabilities, it did not take long for Sony to strike back with its own reaction towards this.  As the HD DVD Xbox 360 add-on is only intended for playing back HD DVD movies, Sony went to criticise several drawbacks about this add-on, such as offering no enhancement for the gamer, since the HD DVD drive will not be used for games.

Another issue Sony went to criticise again is Microsoft\'s use of the legacy 9GB DVD format for games, unlike Sony\'s own Blu-ray format that offers over five times this capacity on a single disc for developers.  Finally, Sony mentioned that Microsoft\'s HD games patch only upscales lower resolution game graphics to 1080p, unlike the PS3 which has native 1080p support for games as standard.

Put up or shut up, Sony.  Show me something that looks better than Mass Effect, Viva Pinata, Gears of War, Lost Odyssey, etc then I\'ll take you seriously as to how much of an impact the limited storage of a DVD will have on games\' potential.  Until then...

Who are you talking to?  \'Sony\' doesn\'t read these forums, I\'m sure.

It\'ll all just be words going back and forth, the only real way to find out who wins/was right will be to wait a couple of years and see.

Take your own advice. We get you are anti-sony. You don\'t have to reiterate it in every fucking thread. Sony is right. It offers nothing new to the consumer except play HD-DVD movies which a stand alone player does a much better job doing.

On that thought, I\'m still wondering what Blu-ray is doing for games.  I have yet to see anything to justify the hefty premium over the 360.  Until I see it I\'ll continue to dump on Sony.

I\'m anti-$600 consoles.  It\'s fucking ridiculous.  There are several games I want to play on a PS3, but there\'s no way I\'d pay so much to do it.  If Sony weren\'t forcing a format down our throats we might have all been talking about our $300 PS3\'s due out in a couple months.

Dont be angry Rik. Nobody is forcing you.

On the other hand there are others that dont feel like its worth paying $300 for 360\'s games and functions but feel its worth to pay $600 (which could also get a price reduction) or $450 to play games like MGS4, FF13, DMC4, Motorstorm, Resistance, Warhawk, Heavenly Sword, GT5, etc etc plus for extras not available on a 360. Nobody is forcing them to get a 360 or a PS3 either.

So no big deal

I\'m wondering what the PS3 games are doing that the 360 games aren\'t?  Until I see that Blu-ray was necessary for Sony\'s vision of games (not their format war bullshit) I\'m going to be upset.  You don\'t know how badly I want Resistance, Heavenly Sword, and the just announced White Knight Story (god, do I want it), but even after seeing them in action I don\'t see the justification for the price tag.  Fuck the blu-ray movie play back and fuck the hdd.  I just wanted the games.

All developers prefer more storage and like the fact that it is there on PS3 for a reason. There is nothing more needed to say,

Out of curiosity Riku, do you own a 360?  Did you pay 400 or 500 for yours?

In any event, the PS3 likely would have been the same price as the 360 without the BR drive, certainly no 300.

Nope.  I\'m waiting for a price drop.  I want the premium but I just can\'t see myself spending $400+ to play some games.   I get my play time at friends\' houses so I can wait.  I\'ll definitely have one, price drop or no, when Halo 3 releases though.

The blu-ray drive and the subsequent HDD put the PS3 costs through the roof.  I\'ll just wait for the day it goes to about $200.  In the mean time I\'ll just have to convince one of my friends to buy one so I can play Resistance and Heavenly Sword.

I care less about 1080p right now, I\'m not buying a $2,000 or so HDTV just to play in 1080p. I\'m fine with 720p now.
