Title: Is Sony FINALLY starting to hit back? Price reduction and HDMI in both versions.
Post by: FatalXception on September 21, 2006, 08:34:35 PM: Sony\'s been so quiet for so long, have they been sitting on a few huge press releases to drop on the hopefull gaming comunity at the last minute?

Today\'s news (http://www.joystiq.com/2006/09/21/surprise-ps3-news-from-tgs/)

The basic system would be dropped to 49 800 Y (about 425 USD) in Japan, and this may carry over to the US. Also, there will be an HDMI output on both versions as HD has become more important...

Same other differences though, baring further news releases. No mem-card reader, no wi-fi support (still has lan port though), and smaller HDD in the lower package.

Post by: Titan on September 22, 2006, 01:23:12 PM: Who didn\'t see this coming? I wonder if its easier to just put the HDMI ports in during the manufacturing process or cheaper. There probably is some reason. I don\'t see them doing it to be nice. Somewhere costs got cut.

Making it more competitive for XBOX360 that are planning to sell their external hd-dvd drive....whereas the cheaper ps3 version will be cheaper than 360 with hd-dvd combo.

Besides, we have no more extra ports in our router in my apartment. There were only 4 ports and 4 drunk retards so wireless would be awesome. The cost of an addon probably is a good 70 bucks itself and if I run out of space on the hard drive, I\'m screwed. Nah, just best to shell out the extra hundred bucks :)

All of a sudden the 20GB-model looks fantastic. 100USD cheaper, of course 40GB less but that can be fixed. It\'s looking mighty fine.
But I already have my 60GB preordered so I\'ll stick with that. Also I\'ll be using WiFi for my PSP.

That is what Sony has said in the past. Though, with the frequent changes they do to the system I feel like they need to re-confirm the Linux stuff.

Are we sure we wont get a price cut announcment for other territories as well? Since TGS is targeted mainly towards japanese audience it was ment that we were going to get only information about the Japanese launch.
