Yesterday I went over to a Development Studio and got to see actual PS3 TEST Kits in action (Until now, all I\'ve seen are the 3 foot bulky dev stations that look like Beta Max videotape players). It was so shiny and sleek (just like Darth Vader\'s Helmet). Low and behold the power supply was internal with minimal heat to the unit and no fan noises! (I\'m not joking, the thing was freaking mute). Ah, I haven\'t wanted to dry hump an inanimate object for several years (don\'t ask, I\'m not telling), but that PS3 Test unit was damn sexy.
:nerd:

I\'m really impressed if Sony managed to make the PS3 as quiet as a PS2Slim, which they stated in a leaked Q&A document from E3 2006.

Maybe they included sound dampening material in the case. Because that thing is a monster.

Good to (NOT) hear this !
Ehm, yeah.. if one of the major selling points is ; the unit being a multi media hub also for HD movies ; then yes, it had better not interfere with the movie sound.
but eh.. without the sarcasm ; this is an achievement by itself. Very good engineering. Comparible PC graphics solutions will either be \'dustbusters\' ( aye, Nvidia ) or you\'ll spend a small fortune on either water cooling or MASSIVE passive heatsinks ( hey, that rhymes ).

Here\'s some more impressions of the hardware.

The final dev-kit delivered exactly what we expected in terms of power; there was no nasty last-minute surprise or anything. I\'ve read the rumors of Cell being so hot that they had to downgrade clock-rate and quite frankly, I don\'t know who is spreading those. Cell specs didn\'t change, its speed didn\'t change, in fact the final retail unit is so quiet that when we first had Lair booting from disc on it we thought the PS3 wasn\'t running at all.
Thats what I thought when I first booted up my PSTwo "Wtf? Whats wrong now? Oh.. its so quiet." :fro:

That\'s a very promising interview. Being a PS3 game dev, you gotta take everything with a grain of salt, but it sure makes me want to give Lair a whirl.
-
^ .... well, i do think there\'s some pr talking within that Factor 5 interview as well. Afterall, they\'re basically 100% PS3 focussed now.
-
Not trying to flame, but why does Factor 5 even matter? Whenever a new system is released I see big long articles from this company on how they\'re using thenew hardware to do new, revolutionary things to so & so game. I only see a couple of Star Wars games for Gamecube for their recent stuff. (2001 & 2003)
Are they just one big Marketing firm now?

eh, their accents sure are annoying if you watch the video clip from the link.
-
They tell you to watch for how fast the disk enters the machine... and no kidding! That disk dissapears in less than a second, hope that that mechanism doesn\'t cause any troubles later on.

The video was taken down from PSM3s website on Sonys request. You can watch the video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9V1EgunRh3M
