Been thinking about taking boxing or muay-thai kickboxing lessons. Don\'t wanna get serious into it, just looking for something that\'s challenging. Going to the gym alone can get a tad boring. :fighting:
I\'ve always wanted to try out Wing Chun (http://youtube.com/watch?v=_QT34CrQOzk), because it looks cool as hell (http://youtube.com/watch?v=tuH-GYUHyQw), but I dunno.. boxing seems more like an athlete\'s sport.

Kick Boxing. They work quite well in the real world should you need to apply your fist on someone\'s face.
-
Why not? Great for physical excercise and defense. I do TaeKwonDo but its the World TaeKwonDo Federation style not the International which means its more like a sport than a martial art.
Muay-thai is very effective. Boxing as well which I think is easier to apply too. It looks like an athlete sport but if you take its excercises seriously and get used to punches you will gain great power and speed. Go for it. Wing Chung is a brilliant martial art. 3 years will make you very effective. 6 years will make you unstoppable. I d prefer the last though since it takes deeper physical excercises and techngiques than boxing
-
thanks for the input. Not worried about defending myself, never been in a fight. I\'m doing this purely for sport and physical challenge.
Take a look at a boxer vs. wing chun practitioner. The wing chun guys are fast but the average boxer looks much more toned and formidable, like they are true athletes.
-
I think you will be satisfied with either choice. Dont underestimate Wing Chun though. Their bodies are very trained as well. Depends highly from the teacher though.

Damn skippy.
Their bodies are very trained as well. Depends highly from the teacher though.
And also a lot of boxers train in various different ways. One is weight training. You can take your martial arts training and add in your own forms of training. You don\'t want to be hulkish because speed is important, but you should never underestimate someone because of their size.

True

what is this... Martial Arts you speak off?

Boxing gym will give you the stamina and the real world skills. I think a lot of the forms training of Karate (or Wu Shu) doesn\'t translate well into the real world. Boxing is aerobics training to the max. Karate (and many of the other types) basically require more money as you ascend to the next belt.
The problem with boxing is, you may be bullied by the gym rats if they think you\'re too soft.
-
I\'m a short filipino, i\'m used to being bullied. :op:
I\'ll check out the local boxing gym first and see if I like it. Then switch over to Muay-Thai if not
-
Muay-Thai is another excellent choice too! but I think it\'s more expensive than boxing.

How did you make a connection between a martial art and my country is beyond me

You don\'t have to make a connection to make fun of Cyprus ;)
-
Oh ok. What about martial arts?
-
I did Judo, Aikido and Karate in my younger days. Of those, I would recommend Judo first, because it\'s good excersize, felixibility, and usefullness (how to fall, protect your head, hold/pin, throw).
I\'ve branched into boxing in recent years, which is I think far more practical as a purely fitness building sport, but can lead to a lot more bulk if you train a lot. The skills you learn in boxing (http://www.thelocal.se/article.php?ID=5220&date=20061014&PHPSESSID=937b1d25468886bbe21b3c5131306a67) you never forget, and it\'s nice to know you can take a punch and protect your head/body.
-
k I tried calling 2 boxing gyms here. 1 was a fax machine and the other was ghetto as hell.
muay thai it is!

Here\'s how:
That doesnt make a connection between a country being worthless and a martial art not costing much.
-
It clearly does.
-
I agree with Gman and Jumpy......wow, I don\'t htink I\'ll ever say that again.
-
muay thai it is!
Excellent choice. :thumb:

Jumpman\'s logic: A policeman is an instrument of law. Guitar is a musical instrument. They are both instruments. Thus a guitar is a policeman

Jeez. I\'ll leave you to your own demise.

I ll leave you to your own instead. Such logic wont help you in real life

uni just take muay thai lessons and kik everyone\'s ass
-
Not if the ostrich gets him first ;)
-
Pff I fear no ostrich. See that evil ostrich head on my avatar? It is hanged on my wall now. Thats what happens to evil ostrichs when they try to get me
-
So does it say you\'re a skank on your wall too?

just had the first lesson. The Muay-Thai gym is actually mixed martial arts and they offer Boxing separately. Only $90/mo so I went for it.
I thought I was in shape but the trainer kicked my ass. I hung in well during the warm ups & calisthenics but the boxing drills made me feel like a 12 yr old girl compared to the others.
Anyway, it feels good to have that "Sh!t I\'m gonna die" feeling again ;)
-
Sweet. I need to get into some martial arts again. Haven\'t since I was a kid. =\\
-
wow, you guys got balls and good physical health to do such thing.
-
I\'ve got balls
-
May I tickle them?
-
only the left one, you\'re not worthy of tickling my right bollock.
:)
-
So does it say you\'re a skank on your wall too?
Nah. That was when it was still alive.

one of my menz back in new jerz took up something called silat...i think it\'s some kind of korean martial arts,...but it\'s very deadly,..it relies on alot of counters,...and with each counter, you can literally kill or cripple somebody, i mean every counter that i\'ve seen from that style will either break a bone or cut off you air supply, and the killer is that anybody can do it...
long story short, the trainer stated that you only need a certain amount of pressure to break any bone, and the tehnique that was displayed was techniques imo that would work out in the streets,...i know some martial arts work only if the perp is attacking you a certain way, from what i\'ve seen in silat, it seems no-matter how the perp attacks you, you will have a dominant counter..

Friend of mine who\'s been boxing for 5 years has always told me that martial arts is more show then go. He tells me in most street fights the pro karate, jee kuan do etc.. people tend to lose to the experienced boxer/street fighter.
-
The problem with martial arts is they\'re a complex way to \'solve\' a problem (fight). Until you master them and spend years in training, you aren\'t ready for every way someone can attack you.
Boxing is the opposite, a very simple way to win a fight. Protect yourself, and punch - so at much less training a boxer will win. I would imagine that with 20 years of training under both belts, however, a master martialartist would win. (Also one of the reasons I recommended Judo... a simpler martial art based on holding/throwing in \'general cases\').

Thats one of the things that annoyied Bruce Lee about the way martial arts were being taught and went to create Jeet Kune Do which is supposed to be a style with no particular style. He tought that you should do whatever it takes and be able to adjust yourself to anything like a flow, instead of thinking "if he does this I ll do this and that". Thats why he studied Mohamet Ali\'s style among other styles and added it in his own martial art.
Unfortunately even Jeet Kune Do is being studied today just like other martial arts
-
Jeet Kun Do is more of an idea than a specific martial art. It can be applied to any fighting style. Bruce Lee called it the "artless art". He talked about street fights a lot and Bruce Lee himself got into street fights. He kept perfecting his form until nobody on the streets could kick his ass. Kind of violent life he grew up in. But his ideas are very deep and if you\'re into martial arts, you should pick up his Tao of Jeet Kun Do book. Interesting stuff.
