This is something I\'ve been thinking about for a while.
When is the videogame industry going to get over this rediculous \'console wars\'?
I think the whole idea of console wars is rediculous. Does it really matter who sells more units then the other? Lets say the Nintendo Wii sells 1 million more consoles then Microsoft and Sony. They win the console war! :rolleyes:. Big freaking deal
I want to know who started console wars. Who gave it the name and started this mess.
It started with the PS2/XBOX/GAMECUBE generation
Suddenly there was a war between these consoles. Winning the war meant selling more consoles then the others. By this definition PS2 won the console war of last generation.
But by winning the war what did it actually win?
NOTHING
PS2 selling xx million more units then XBOX and Gamecube did NOTHING for it. PS2 selling xx million more units then XBOX and Gamecube didn\'t hurt XBOX or Gamecube as both consoles made their developers money. So by winning last generation\'s console war PS2 gained nothing over the \'enemy\'. Sure having more consoles out there increases revenue and brand awareness, but when you win a war you are suppose to have your way with the enemy. PS2 did not.
I guess what I\'m trying to say is console wars is like Pepsi vs Coke.

I remember console wars when it was SNES vs. Genesis, but the real hype didn\'t come until the PSX/Saturn/N64. That\'s when you saw gaming mags with Sonic & Mario arm wrestling on the cover.
The reason people get so antsy about videogame systems is because they_are_stupid. They want to believe their system is better than one they don\'t have so they\'ll keep telling themselves and others that until they turn blue in the face.
As long as YOU enjoy the system and get some value out of it then that\'s all that matters.

This is no different then the soft drink wars or any other competition between businesses. But there are just too many fanboys fueling the fire its rediculous.

Its a stupid discussion. No shit there\'s a console war and it exists because of common competition between companies. In every field, every product has some sort of "war" between companies. This is no different. There were "console wars" even in the Atari days. This is nothing new.

Wow thats pathetic. Sonic and Mario arm wrestling? Oh my. Eiksirf was right. WE started the console wars. I had a part of being part of the nonsense. From my early days here at PSX2CENTRAL you could tell I wanted Sony to sell more consoles then everyone. I was like that until one day at the local gamestop I witnessed a cashier and a customer seriously arguing over PS2 and Xbox. Look at this picture in the magazine! one said. XBOX Madden has better lighting. The other: But look at the PS2 controller its better blah blah. The whole scene made me feel sooo stupid. Ever since witnessing that I changed my attitude toward consoles. I realized how sutpid it is to cut down other consoles or hope for one to fail or whatever the case may be.

The thread is silly because console wars are silly. I\'m tired of people saying "OH Xbox has got an HD-DVD add-on. Watch out Sony!" That\'s just so lame. Reminds me of some guy on the radio complaining about all the stupid pepsi vs coke commercials. He said "screw it I\'ll drink Dr. Pepper!" (yes I know drpepper is part of pepsi)

I agree that MS, Sony and Nintnedo are \'waring\' over the consumer\'s $, but it is blown out of proportion IMO. Stupid fanboys have to keep saying thier system is better. Who cares if your system is better? Who cares if your systme is the most popular.
To sum it up, I agree with THX\'s comment

That\'s what me and a friend who use to argue over consoles have agreed upon. We both agree the Nintendo Wii fits what he wants out of a console and the PS3 fits what I want out of a console. We\'ll both be happy. Why argue and try to claim one\'s console is better than the other\'s?

I\'m sorry guys, but my opinions are the gospel and if you don\'t agree, I have no choice but to force it on you.
Console wars are people\'s way of justifying their purchase by assuring themselves that it\'s the best thing out there. If they can make someone else agree, it further validates their choice, so they go out of their way to try to do so.
It\'s also something of a fanaticism for some people. Like rooting on a favorite football team. You want to see that team go the distance, outplay the competition and rake in the accolades.
And also, my internet penis is bigger than yours.

I wasn\'t trying to debate with him or anything. I was just making the piont that the console wars have been going on since the beginning and there are always fanboys. Its stupid and I agree because its if you like the system.

The only difference between then and now is that today people are debating for more complicated things over which is better.
Back in the 16bit days for example it was mostly teenagers comparing their consoles, their creators behind them (Sega/Nintendo) and their mascots. Ofcourse the industry wasnt as expanded and grown ups were less. They were very simple products mainly targeting teens and kids.
Today even 27 year olds compare consoles for very complicated characteristics like strange hardware architectures, non-gaming features, online play, HUGE budget exclusives, specific dev support etc.
But thats because the industry evolved and expanded to a wider range of ages and unlike then, gaming industry has more connections to other industries and jobs than ever before.
In essence it\'s still the same console war. Just under a different mask
