Title: Tear it apart
Post by: Phil on November 26, 2006, 06:50:13 PM
http://www.Philknapp.com

Tell me what I\'ve done wrong, what can be improved and whatnot.  Compliments are nice but I don\'t need them.  Be constructive though, "this sucks" won\'t help me improve the site.  Thanks in advance guys.

I know it doesn\'t work at all in IE and I haven\'t gotten around to figuring out why.

1) It doesn\'t resize at all for a smaller-than-full window...

2) Did you do the computer stuff completely from scratch?  The Bell X-1 picture looks a bit like a clipart Bell X-1 I have, so if it\'s not from scratch, make sure it\'s understood.

Small comments:
Nice clean layout, easy to navigate.  Information is clear and simple to find.  You might change your resume to "References Furnished on request" just so you don\'t repeat yourself.  Also, the resume seems very directed towards a specific field/job (working with computers/arts/design), and if this isn\'t what you are looking for specifically, you might want to pad it a bit and generalize a bit more.  Definitely add a picture or something to the start page (as opposed to the gray empty space).  Try to get some more content on there in the different sections, three or four is too few to show a variety of or mastery in a single medium.

Works fine in FF2.

1) Yeah, I realize this, unfortunately my expertise in HTML and CSS is limited to 2/3rds of a quarter so I\'m not exactly great at it yet.

2)The bell x-1 is an illustrator reproduction of the original stamp.  Once I get the bugs worked out on the rest of the site I\'ll be adding the descriptions to the work.

Its a portfolio site directly geared to getting an internship in the field of digital design.  I\'m not trying to show mastery, I just need to show I can do it, and do it well.  I\'m only a sophomore in college so in all reality this just needs to get me a job being a web monkey until my junior/senior year.

You really need to spice up your resume a bit. There\'s barely anything on it and you don\'t go into much detail about your skills.

No, my cell, go ahead and spam it if you want, I screen all my calls.  My resume isn\'t really a concern at the moment guys, can we um, look at the site maybe?

from work experience:

"opened and closed the shop"
"served water and bread to the customers"

neither of those are relevant for a future job.  take off your GPA, no interviewer will care.
expand your school experience as it looks like you want a job in that field.

why switch majors after 2 years?

Its an internship, my school experience is going to encompass another 4 years.  I\'ve only had 2 quarters of experience in my current field so there isn\'t a whole lot to put there yet.  The internship is a school wide requirement starting your sophomore year.  Every other quarter you work in the field.  I have another 2 months to edit my resume so its not too crucial of a concern yet.

I switched majors after 2 years because I realized that I didn\'t want to put myself through hell for the next 50+ years of my life.

That\'s sort of what I\'m going through now. Don\'t know if I want to spend my 20\'s doing endless hours of studying.

very nice start phil, my site wasn\'t that good when i was a sophomore.  that kicks ass that they\'re teaching you table-less design right off the bat, they sure didn\'t do that when I was in college!

I would add some depth to your header (make the text "pop out" more) and clean up the lines (the angled sides need anti-aliasing).

You can check my old-school site here for resume ideas: http://scottydesigns.bluesurfdesigns.com

it is out of date since I got my job but I pretty much based my site & resume around what others have done, so take a look at what\'s out there.

Add more content as others have said.  It doesn\'t even have to be that great, just lets people know that you\'re busy and have some experience.  Good luck with your internship, they are pretty much the only way to get a job in this industry.

Thanks for the site.

Issue I have with adding more content is that I hear the exact opposite from the professors.  Unless its spectacular don\'t add it.  As they put it, its better to look like you do A work 100% of the time then to have a lot of work that is hit or miss.  I\'ll be getting some feedback from my prof today so I\'ll probably be making some changes by the end of the day.

I dig it. I would move the main header in off the left edge of the screen. The letter P is cut off. I\'d put the black background all the way to the left of the screen too for readability.

I might try to re design it a bit so you don\'t have to scroll from side to side, but other than that I dig it. Cool drawings, too. Like the photo of the building too.

Well it\'s an issue and since most people still use IE, it would be a good idea to fix the design.

while the content on the site is very nice and the layout aswell the graphics are jaggied. Did you create the basic forms in photoshop and used the transform option to distort them?

No, I didn\'t use the transform option, I just got stingy with how many colors the .gif was allowed to use. Bad idea.  Its next on my list of things to fix.  I got a lot of feedback from my classmates and professor so things will be changing shortly.

First off, you need to learn how to spell Photography.

I like the style of your resume, but it sure is white.  Under serving assistant, you don\'t need to say you bussed tables.  What does that mean?  Took care of any other needs?  Like say the chef needs more beens, you go and get him beens?

Always remember, it\'s not what you did, it\'s what you say you did.  Until of course you\'ve done something.

To be honest, what job would you be going for that you would be needing a resume?

I really don\'t know much about you from the resume.  Usually a resume is used to quickly see if someone is worth meeting.  To give the interviewer things to ask you questions about.

Since you don\'t have much to say, why don\'t you tell me what you excelled in during your Architecture classes?  Or your design classes.

I haven\'t used mine in forever, but you can see how I gave the interviewer plenty of things that he could ask me about

And it looks like he spelled "Photography" right on his page. Don\'t know what you mean.

Its an internship to be a webmonkey :shy:.  At least until I have more I can talk about in the field.  Unfortunately I only have two quarters worth of work in my major.  I can bullshit, but the firms will call me out on it.  My college requires that we co-op (intern) every other quarter.  They basically spoon feed us a job the first go around but I\'d still like something that I can show and not necessarily be stuck writing HTML/CSS all day.  By our senior year we start taking jobs at design firms doing more than just the grunt work but I have to start somewhere.

Oh and where did I spell photography wrong on my site?  It elludes me and I\'m sure I\'m just staring at it too hard.

Have you been in any art shows?

Just fyi, it looks fine in IE7.  IE6 down has a broken rendering engine.  7 ain\'t perfect but it handles basic CSS much better

ps- if u wanna cheat you can pay a subscription to boxedart.com and have access to tons of pre-built web templates for any number of categories, including portfolio sites :)

It\'s not about bullshit, but presentation:

"Worked as a line chef" (not you, just in general for this example)
is the same as
"Prepared, cooked, and presented meals in the food service industry" (or some such).

Without getting overly wordy you can make regular things sound much more important.

Except for the hotography thing, the site looks a lot better in I.E.

On your fourth drawing, I think you mispelled exercise.

And my advice on your resume, I might list your program knowledge first, then education, then activities, then work exp. That\'d be the order of impressiveness, far as I\'m concerned, and maybe beef up school or activities with art related stuff like vid said.

I know someone who sweeps up the shit people leave behind at the local bus station, he insists he\'s a "hygiene control executive".

Last time I saw him, I said it doesn\'t matter what they call you, you still sweep shit up after people with a brush.
