The first Scandinavian in space is Christer Fuglesang from Sweden.
At 49 years of age he finally got to do what he has waited for, for the past 14 years when he started training for ESA. He has since then also trained with NASA in 1996-98 and for the Russians in 1996.
Christer Fuglesang is an associate professor in particle physics at Stockholm University.
Fuglesang was selected for the STS-116 mission with the Space Shuttle Discovery. He has currently performed 2 space walks and there is talk of a third.

Socialism + über raw capitalism can work, who would have thunk it? ;) KIDDING!

Christer had become little of a joke here in his home country because he never got to go to space.. Guess who\'s laughing now?

"Mee!" (Gollum\'s voice)
Last night I saw the Space Press conference or whatever they call it from ISS. TV4 asked him a few questions and Thomas Reiter the German astronaut was there also. The Crown Princess invited him to brief the King after his return.
Happy return voyage Christer! :D

exploration of space is so pointless.

exploration of space is so pointless.
Not any more.. IKEA will take over the universe. :D
But really, space exploration helps advance technology, which is good. Also STS-116s mission was the help expand ISS, not really explore so much. ISS is used for lots of things, including medical research I believe.
-
Please. Raping Brits and Europeans....the offsprings later went to America and colonized. Then years later, their offspring went to space. Hell, NASA even named one of their missions to Mars, The Viking Space Mission.
By Thor.....you are a bit behind with the news, aren\'t you? ;)

i agree..just because we cant get a person past the moon and we\'re less than a spec on the universe doesnt mean we shouldnt explore what we can. We go to mars, we\'ll look foreward going past mars..not that we\'d ever put someone in one of the gas planets, lol. If you think that\'s pointless than ur not a science person. But dont worry mm..NASA isnt getting funded the money it needs
i wish the soviets would come back :D

there is *nothing* out there.
been watching too many movies.
-
i know we\'ll never get out of our solar system but we might as well look foreward to checking out some of the moons. I think there\'s got to be something somewhere, but seeing as the next star is what..100,000 light years away? we cant explore outside of our world...pun intended
I mean..if 95% of our universe is dark matter, and we dont even undestand it, then we should explore during peace time er something.
-
I think we should start looking for a new Earth. The way we treat this one it can only be a matter of time before something really bad happens to it (us).

really? you\'ve explored all of space have you? go back into your hole.

4 lightyears actually.

has there even been an aborigine in space yet?
-
nope, but there\'s been a few aussies. you know, those people that are laughing at you.
-
I\'m sure that somewhere, on one of those millions of worlds there\'s *something* worth finding (and I don\'t mean resources). I doubt we\'ll ever hear about it or see it though, we\'re going to destroy our world long before we get out of the solar system.
-
we\'ll wipe ourselves out long before we cause permanent damage to this world.
-
Jeebus will come down and eat all of you before we have the chance to wipe ourselves out.

nuclear war won\'t permanently damage the world?
or you have some other premonition on how civilization ends

did a huge fucking asteroid smacking into the side on the planet ruin earth?
-
asteroid\'s made the earth. earth is made of space stuff (example: asteroids)
a nuclear bomb is a little different than a piece of rock. And it\'d be more than just one big asteroid. Itd be a bunch of bombs screwing up the enviornment for more than just humans. itll be a fucked up place if a bunch of nukes went off
The ones that have hit us, while huge, arent that big. But the odds of a huge one that can clear the earth is improbable. At most, the best that i think would happen is something similar to the dinosaurs. Something hits and kills the most dominant species (mammals) and something else will survive the impact and evolve into the main species.
-
i\'ve always been interested in space exploration...even if at this point it\'s virtually useless...in my youth i always would be scared that a black hole would engulf the earth. The earth will die a nuclear death first before some asteroid destroys it....as soon as some poor third world country gets a nuke, well either them or somebody from the middle east, i don\'t think they hesitate to use it...as far as humans go tho, i do think it\'s amazing what they are capable to do and some of the feats they are performing...*thinks of those photos from mars, space walks on the space station* that is really some amazing stuff

"As the mass of the Earth increased, so did the gravitational force it exerted, and it was bombarded by objects from space ranging in size from dust particles to small planets (planetismals)."
from your own quotation....nice try though :thumb:

i fart on you. That formed the earth but all of our chemical elements come from asteroids that hit the earth over time.
I dont have a link so..whateva
and that was before reading phil\'s post. Thank you phil
-
I highly doubt we will ever destroy all life on this planet. Sure, maybe a lot of countries will be wiped of the face of the earth, but there will very likely be places that remain relatively unaffected. For instance the place that shoots the last missile ;)

I wasn\'t refuting the fact that asteroids helped. What I gathered was that you were saying teh earth formed from just bombarding asteroids.

You know your history, I\'m impressed. :D
Btw, yesterday he returned. The landing got delayed because of poor weather, anyway it was a very nice landing by the pilot.
Also good news for Christer, according to ESA its 100% certain he will travel to space again, possibly for a longer stay (months!) at ISS. :D

I guess "nuclear winter" means nothing to you. :)

It will certainly solve our global warming problem.
