Title: Just had the wierdest week
Post by: nO-One on December 16, 2006, 05:39:38 PM
well this is pretty much the end of the week and I must say... it was wierd, somewhat exciting at times, sucked at times aswell but ... turned out well I guess.

Anyhoo best to start at the beginning, I work for a newspaper around these parts one of the three big ones. I\'m in charge of the image department so a lot of Photoshop work and I do the graphics for the paper aswell as some layout when needed. For a while now I\'ve been writing game reviews along with general tech news. Pretty much things are good for me.

Now  Friday Dec 8th is when it get\'s interesting, our editor had been seen less and less around the office for the last month or so and on Friday he turned in his resignation. But he would continue working until the end of the year as per his agreement with the company. But he wasn\'t around a lot and the rumors said he along with "secret financial backers" were starting a new newspaper that would be in competition with our own.
The board of course not happy with that warned him that if true he would be breaking his agreement with the company by doing this while still employed. Basically a lot of legal mumbo jumbo going on that doesn\'t really concern me.

However Wednesday it gets interesting for me, it was a very busy day due to all kinds of christmas special stuff in the paper so it was very large but the editor called me into his office knowing full well that every second counts until the deadline. But I went anyway.

Started by talking all kinds of good stuff about my work and my writing. talked about recent rumours and said many of them were true and offered me a job at the new newspaper and throwed in all kinds of small perks along with of course a huge raise. Then he showed me a confidentiality agreement so he could discuss the new compamy with me and asked me to sign. Very simple basic agreement that expires in January, so curiosity got the better of me and I signed. He then revealed the "secret backers" who as many suspected turned out to be very large Icelandic media conglomerate that ownes tv and radio stations, newpapers and magazines in iceland as well as in Scandinavia.

So I said I would consider his offer, I didn\'t really want to take the job since I like my work and the people I work with, and the editor while I\'m on very good terms with him I\'m not his biggest fan. But I go back to work but of course being a newspaper ... the news traveles fast.

Early next Thursday morgning before I go to work I get the call it was the ceo of the company I work for, he had learned of my meeting with the departing editor and according to him "they could not afford to lose me" and summoned me to a meeting around 13:00.
I went to work around 11\'ish and shortly after the editor called me back into his office just trying to get me to take his offer, I told him I had not had time to think about it yet and got back to work.

The ceo learned of our second meeting and asked me to come to his office. He asked what the offer was and he matched the offer trying to get me to stay and spiced up my salary a bit, I was thrilled since I now could continue working there and get a raise, but I said was very tempted but I would have to think about it and I would give him an answer shortly after.

Now going back to work the editor learned of my meeting with the ceo, called me into his office (I was getting kinda tired of all of this to tell the truth) but he upped his offer to come join his company. I said yet again "just let me think about it for a few hours". And I went back to work.

Now getting late in the day the ceo learned of my last meeting with the editor and called me into his office, upped the deal quite a bit, not just salary but other perks aswell. And I tried my luck demanded a new computer... and since I couldn\'t think of anything.... a new chair ... which I got. Basically I decided enough was enough took the deal and signed a contract with the company.

So all things are good, continue working there and get a huge raise and a whole lot of perks yay for me and I was happy.

Now Friday again get\'s interesting, the board got enough bad stuff on the editor and fired him on the spot quite literally threw him out of the building. And the media went nuts over all of this getting out with rumors flying about the stuff going on and talking about "the departing editor trying to get a member of the staff to the new company while under agreement with the other" so a lot of rumors flying around basically.... about me.

And now, the rumors still flying about the "secret financial backers" and how far along the project is and all kinds of other stuff that I now know all about, but can\'t talk about because of the confidentiality agreement and also being "the member of the staff" he tried to get.

It\'s been a wierd week for me.

Haha, that\'s super cool nO-One! Congrats!

PS. You should have asked for a Canon 5D and mailed it to me. As compensation, I\'d mail you some of my sperm.

That\'s pretty cool.  How many years did you sign for?

I have to assume you asked for a reach around before the desk chair.

Congrats.  Being in a bidding war must be great, and you seem to have come out of the situation in the best possible manner you could.

Thanks guys, saving up for a nice house would be a smart thing to do... can\'t say I started to well since I bought me yet another guitar yesterday just because I could... I have around eight now and I\'m running out of room for them.

Sam.... you\'re right I should\'ve asked for more... I could\'ve gotten a raise and a cup of your sperm damnit man what was I thinking.

And the contract doesn\'t say how many years just as long as I can/want to work and it also makes it very hard for them to fire me.
The whole reach around thing... well... I didn\'t say I signed just one confidentiality agreement ;)

Guy #1 wants to hire nO-One for own firm. Guy #2 gives a higher offer. Repeat. No-One therefore gets a raise and blows it on his 8th guitar.

heh  I bought this http://www.ibanez.com/guitars/guitar.asp?model=S520EX&z=y&color=1 guitar, wanted to play around with the ZR trem and so far it\'s been great. Having just come out of all this negotiation business I guess I was "in the zone" so to say and I managed to get about 35% discount on it because of a barely noticable scratch.

wow.  i think i understand most of your story because some of your vocabulary are like high class or something because i got lost in some part trying to understand what you are saying.

So, it seems like you got a high raise.  Congratulations.  I guess maybe both companies wanted you because of your high writing skill or something.

either that or my english sucks you take your pick. But writing skills... I doubt it I\'m a nerd that\'s why they wanted me. Basically I pick and color correct the images that go into the newspaper and cut out the ones that need to be cut. I also do the newspaper graphics and do layout when needed.

Funny thing today, a new computer was apparently bought today haven\'t seen it not even sure one was bought but there seems to be some jealousy from some people in the layout department. I chuckled

yeah pretty much, after my first meeting with the editor everybody knew something was up since well he otherwise had no reason to talk to me.

I also talked this over with a buddy of mine in the layout department, and of course when all this hit the media everybody knew I was the guy he had tried to get.

In other news I got a new\'ish computer today faster than my aging 1,8Ghz iMac, we\'re waiting for all of the CS3 package before I go with an Intel iMac.
