Title: To move or not?
Post by: THX on January 21, 2007, 02:54:08 PM
Our rental lease ends this month.  It\'s either stay in the tech job-filled DC area and buy a place or, move to Florida.  I hear Tampa\'s great for IT/web jobs.  What pushed me to post was looking at the difference in properties.

The home we are looking to buy in VA (http://realtor.com/Prop/1065823542).  No backyard, joke of a deck (3x6), no storage space.

Just glancing at Tampa (http://www.realtor.com/Prop/1067097698).  Pretty much the complete opposite.

Ughhhhh I\'m off to Monster to post my updated resume for FL employers.  If anything I\'ll just entertain the thought for a little while longer. :)  Please tell me I\'m better off staying in the traffic ingested, miserable-winter DC area, even if my home is a POS.

Tampa sounds pretty cool. Do you like living in the DC area?

heh one of the things i didn\'t consider before i moved down here was the storms....moving to florida i\'m sure you\'re going to be seeing plenty of that,...VA is kinda right in the middle there, i really don\'t consider being down south until you hit the carolina\'s, but that home in florida you posted looks great, and as always i would always consider moving into the house in florida as oppossed to what you posted for VA.

I like the house in FL better than the one in VA. That\'s my opinion though. But, FL is definitely gonna be different than VA. The weather is gonna be warmer and more stormy. But I bet you already knew that :) I\'d move to FL for a couple years but that\'s it.

My brother was in FL for a few months for some air force training (cant remember where) and his main complaint was the humidity. He said just laying in bed was uncomfortable.

If you can get used to the weather, I think FL is better..you seem pretty set on liking FL more anyway. just have to get over the hump.

By "tech job-filled" do you mean they have a lot of job opportunities? or that there\'s a lot of people ur competing with and its hard to get a job? If it has a lot of job opportunities (that looks spelled wrong..) then I\'d find out if you\'d do as well in FL or not before making a move

Yeah but on military bases, they typically don\'t have climate controls like in a house. Barracks and stuff tend to be uncomfortable. I\'m sure THX will have no problem investing in a nice A/C unit and dehumidifier :)

i put my resume back on monster and got 6 calls in 2 days, even more emails, but only 1 was from FL, if that tells you anything about the difference in job markets.

screw FL

If you moved to the south you could make out with your sister. If you don\'t, I will (make out with your sister, not move :p)

I don\'t understand why people who live on the Eastern seaboard think so two-dimensionally about where they can live.  "Hmmm, I can either move up to to New York, or down to Florida..."

I don\'t blame you for skipping over the midwest, but you never considered the REAL west.  There are some great cities out here with great technology job markets.  Also, you don\'t have to worry about hurricanes and ice storms.

Just a suggestion.

there\'s enough people here. Im sorry but if san diego gets like LA..im moving. And at this rate it\'s going to get there at some point (although i can\'t picture it)

northern california is a lot better with stuff like property but good luck getting a place in southern california without paying an arm and a leg.

But he does have a point about no hurricans and ice storms. People are too ignorant to realize that earthquakes really arent a big deal. The "big" one is coming eventually, but by then there will be plenty of hurricanes fucking things up in the mean time

Yeah but the East Coast is better than the midwest and especially the west coast. I mean, the west coast has California. Who wants to live there? Especially LA. I hear there are a lot of gay people living there. That true Core? ;)

FL is great because it\'s still cheap to live and no state income tax.

Humidity is bad parts of the year, but it doesn\'t get nearly as hot here as most other places in the US.  Tampa has never hit 100 officially.

core i used to live in cali & vegas (navy brat).  I like the weather, the people are more laid back... but the traffic & real estate prices are even worse than DC, which is horrible already.

I guess this applies to SC like Viper was saying.  What cities do you guys recommend I look at?

Ever consider Texas? Warmer and the cost of living is way down. You\'ll go from a 500 sq ft apartment there for like 800 to one here for like 4 something.

That\'s what I\'m saying.  It doesn\'t have to be California, if you have some kind of bias against my state.

Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, Colorado, Oregon, Washington

Some great cities in there and nice job markets.

"Texas? Only steers and queers come from Texas and you don\'t look like a steer to me...." Ah I love that movie :)

I don\'t think I can ever live in Texas. Moving from North Jersey to South Jersey was quite different to me, lol.
