Alot of internet rumors are spreading that the PS3 is overflowing in stores and stores are having a hard time dealing with the over supply etc etc but is the PS3 really not selling?
http://www.amazon.com/gp/bestsellers/videogames/ref=pd.ts_h/103-0269706-9795001
Not bad for a console that can\'t be sold and nobody wants
I\'ve seen a few show up at local department stores only to disappear a few days later
PS3 may indeed surpass the 360\'s total by the end of the year
edit: Notice the rank of the other consoles
-
would you please just enjoy the console that you bought...
-
^^
Wouldn\'t that be a wonderful dream?
-
Part of the reason for posting this is that I had to do some research myself after the incredible amount of doubt, even at this forum (thoughts?) that the PS3 was not selling and it and bluray was doomed. The large amount of this was unsettling to me. I\'ve even seen threads that claim PS3 is already a disaster and that it and bluray will destroy Sony and current PS3 owners will be left with an overpriced underused console with bluray (ie Saturn). And most of the people who replied agreed with the topic starter because 90% of the news about the PS3 out there is bad, PS3 prices slashed in Japan because units cant be sold, Sony losing Market share to Wii, Sony losing billions during 3rd quarter because of PS3 etc
At gamespot and other forums the amount of ps3 is not selling, Sony is doomed posts are overwhelming.
According to this link and what I\'ve seen at the stores nothing could be further from the truth
-
The fact that you\'re driving to each of these stores probably just to look at their PS3 stock is the only unsettling thing I\'ve heard or seen.
Now my take on it. I work as a rep for Pansonic selling plasma tvs in different stores around Columbus and I see PS3\'s on store shelves in almost every store I go to, week in week out.
-
there isn\'t a single ps3 to be found in my area.
nothing will please me more than sony gaining some serious ground over the next year, which they obviously will.
 at gamespot forums.
-
I think the problem for PS3 is that Wii is blowing it away so far. Makes the otherwise successful PS3 sales look weak.
-
I may go buy one today. I\'ll let you know how easy or how difficult it was. This will settle the sales issue by my scientific experiment of going to a store and looking for one.
-
Just bought one at Target. I guess that means they\'re selling . . . no wait . . . it must mean they\'re not selling \'cause I just bought one without even trying . . . no wait . . .
-
i was very tempted to get one after my tax refund but i can\'t push myself to do it just for motorstorm and resistance.
Even after that I\'d have a tough time deciding whether to get sports games and other multi-platform games on either 360 or ps3.
-
Sold out at the three Targets at my location. I can see a bunch of PS3\'s sitting on the floor in....say.....Biloxi, Mississippi. Where the average wage is a lot less than the wages in the Mid-Atlantic.
-
Seven at BB today. I live in the Boston area. ;)
-
Oh...and there\'s always a supply of 360\'s where ever I\'ve gone.
-
Well I can confirm that there\'s NO PS3\'s anywhere around here.
No Wii\'s either. :(
-
Well I can confirm that there\'s NO PS3\'s anywhere around here.
No Wii\'s either. :(
That\'s because no one gives a shit about Denmark ;)
-
well i honestly would have to believe that when the games start to finally build, they\'ll see more sales. i still think sony could have done without the blu-ray gig.....even tho i\'am startin to see them (blu-ray movies) bein\' sold side by side with their dvd counterparts,...on tv....as it is tho price is still an issue with me....for both consoles actually,....i guess we\'ll never see $299 again...
-
I\'ve never seen one on a shelf anywhere in Tampa.
-
I\'ve been to Target several times over the past month and they\'ve always had multiple systems on hand.
-
i still think sony could have done without the blu-ray gig....
Sony took the gamble in including the high priced blu-ray in the PS3 but early indications are that it was the right move and will make them billions
Before PS3 hit the shelves HD-DVD was outselling blu-ray nearly 3 to 1. In the months since PS3\'s release in November blu-ray sells have increased and blu-ray sells passed HD-DVD sells for the first time ever in December. The rumor is that blu-ray now outsells HD-DVD 2.5 to 1 and that margin is expected to get larger as we progress through 2007. One analyst says he doesnt expect the format war to go very far into 2008 with blu-ray winning.
So that means Sony gets money off of each blu-ray disc sold, Price drops for PS3 hardware and the cost to make blu-ray discs drop as well. Developers have plenty of room for games on blu-ray while 2-3 disc long games start to appear more abundantly on 360.
Blu-ray is the right move by Sony, if they win the format war which they should
-
I bet Sony even saw this anti-playstation sentiment and ridicule people are giving it ahead of time. I bet its all part of their market strategy. They probably will come out swinging with the blu-ray disk.
-
Yeah they not selling. So now what can I have your?
-
Yeah they not selling. So now what can I have your?
kopking?
-
nope, not me
-
so many extreme answers...from some members seeing alot on shelves to some not seeing any. i guess it depends on your location.
-
Yeah, the honest fact is that it is selling well, just not as good as Wii. Wii throws off the grading scale with its unusual success this early on and makes the solidly performing PS3 look worse by comparison.

Wednesday 31-Jan-2007 SCEA tells the New York Times what we\'ve known for a while now
Sony Computer Entertainment of America spokesperson Dave Karraker has told the New York Times that, "The frenzy we saw at the holidays has subsided a bit[/b]."
Shortly after Christmas it was possible to walk into a US retailer and pick up a PS3 without having to pre-order one, or get up at the crack of dawn and stand in line waiting for the shops to open.
Then we had reports of Japanese retailers knocking 20 percent off the PS3 price in Japan to try and shift units. Clearly this is down to the fact that PS3 is still waiting for a killer app.
He [Karraker] also took time to have a pop at Nintendo, saying "Wii could be considered an impulse buy more than anything else." Thanks for that.

Sales for Sony Corp.\'s Playstation 3 incurred a decrease for the third week in a row in Japan according to the latest retail sales data for the region.
Media Create Co. on Fri. reported that the PS3 sold 19,996 units between Jan. 22 and Jan. 28. By comparison, the PS3 sold 21,105 units the week prior.
The system managed to rank one new title in the top 50 software sales, the role-playing offering Enchant Arm.
Sony this week blamed the PS3 for a five percent decrease in third-quarter earnings. The company cited start up costs and a price cut in Japan prior to its release.
http://news.punchjump.com/article.php?id=3708
Takao Yuhara, has told AP in an interview that the loss could in fact be more than the 200 billion yen (approx $1.6 billion) that Sony has currently forecast for the financial year ending March.

Make of it what you will, but I don\'t think we\'ll be seeing any more $500/600 consoles from Sony ever again. In related news...
The videogame publisher with the largest market share in PlayStation 3 titles reported today that sales of games for the platform were less than expected during the holidays.
During a conference call elaborating on financial results for the quarter ended Dec. 31, Electronic Arts executive VP Frank Gibeau said the publisher was "disappointed" at the tie-ratio of PS3 games sold to each system purchased.
EA holds a 32% share of PS3 game revenue based on $41 million in orders from retailers and distributors (900,000-plus units at $44.99 wholesale) through the holiday quarter.
That\'s many fewer games than sold during the Xbox 360 launch in 2005. Then, the publisher filled orders for Xbox 360 games totaling $76 million (1.69 million units at $44.99 wholesale). Both platforms suffered from manufacturing problems that kept supplies extremely tight at launch.

Anybody who thinks that PS3 is doing great is only lying to themselves. It\'s clearly not the blockbuster everyone thought it would be (including myself). It\'s not all bad though, and I think Sony will pull out of it fine in a couple of years...after some price drops.
-
1 - I\'m not worried about low Japanese sales, when the number of 360s being sold a week is probably in the hundreds
2 - Why does EA have low sells on the PS3? Their PS3 games SUCK. NFS Carbon is a joke and Madden 07 is a downgrade from the PS2 version
3 - Sony is selling enough PS3s to tip the high-def format war in their favor. Sony will have no regrets releasing the PS3 for $600 because without PS3 blu-ray would be on the path of the dinosaur
And what would you consider blockbuster sells? The idea that you can find it in supply 2 months after launch is no indication of weak sells. Some moron on the web said the sales clerk looked surprised when he bought a PS3 so he now knows for sure PS3s are not selling  . Idiots like this are spreading lies and rumors throughout the web because the following posts agreed.
The PS3 is futureproof and has lasting appeal. Once the frenzy over the Wii\'s gimick controller is over its sales will flatline. PS3 is only going to gain steam over time.
-
Riku and clowd, bottom line, I see you both as saying the same thing. PS3 will do fine. I agree

http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20070202-8760.html
As of the end of 2006, only 695,000 consumers owned either a Blu-ray or HD DVD player. 270,000 of those were HD DVD players; the other 425,000 were Blu-ray. The overwhelming majority of Blu-ray players are PS3s—only 25,000 standalone Blu-ray players had been sold at year-end. Just over half of the HD DVD players sold were Xbox 360 add-ons.
-
i actually thought (and still think) the ps3 would put blu-ray over the top and make blu-ray win. That is after the ps3 gets good games and even a price drop. I mean..im going to get a ps3..but not for a while.
Anyone think there\'s a possibility that they both exist? Kind of like Ps3 and 360? does one necessarily need to fall off the face of the earth? can i ask 4 questions in a row? you tell me...
-
Only if they are cross compatible. Other than that I get the shakes thinking about two formats out there. I still have battle scars from the Betamax years.

So thats about 400,000 PS3\'s, 25,000 stand alone BR players
And around 135,000 360 HD-DVD addons, 135,000 stand alone HD-DVDs
How much do stand alone BR players cost and how much do stand alone HD DVD players btw?
-

Yesterday I did a quick unsientific search of this and found standalone HD-DVD players averaged $4-500 and blu-ray players cost $6-800.
The blu-ray players are far superior as they allow for 1080p (the HD-DVD players for that cheap only did 720p/1080i)
So it\'s obvious the average Joe is buying HD-DVD for the simple fact it is cheaper. I really hope we don\'t get stuck with HD-DVD for the next 10 years.
But in 1 year there is going to be 5-10 million PS3s in homes across the globe and in 5 years 30-40 million and in 10 years 70-80 million all equiped with blu-ray. I dont see how movie studios can turn down such a large base of consumers and I can\'t see PS3 owners wanting shell out another $500 to buy a SECOND high definition player that doesnt play their blu-ray collection. I know I certainly won\'t
Good news: Bluray is outselling HDDVD 2.5-1 at the moment
Bad News: It\'s only because of the PS3. Also Warner is refusing to release their biggest movies and biggest HD-DVD sellers like Batman Begins on Bluray. Some say this is to prolong the format war and suck as much money out of HD-DVD as possible before it dies. Universal is not making movies for bluray at all despite the fact blu-ray is selling better. Again, some think this is done to delay the end of the war and suck as much money out of both formats as possible.
Viperfujax I cant see both formats existing because one will almost certainly start to lag far behind. 2.5 blurays for every 1 HD-DVD is lagging far behind. Studios will not support a format that lags behind 3-1 or 4-1 for a long period of time (a year). Hopefully the current trend will continue.
-
It seems like the repetition of VHS and Betamax. Betamax was of superior quality but VHS was cheaper. The latter won. Ofcourse this time there are more BR owners with the PS3 backing it up. So things could be a little different this time.
BR seems to be doing increasingly well unlike the Betamax

VHS won because you could get porn on it. no other reason is close.
however, porn is nearly free on the internet this time around.
plus, HD porn is hard to watch. who wants to see every little pimple and razor burn?
the whole betamax thing needs to stop being mentioned.
Blu-Ray is not even a sony proprietary format.
every time some moron on the internet brings it up, i want to just throw up all over my keyboard.

According to this article, dated February 02, blu-ray standalone palyers have nearly caught hd-dvd stand alone players. Reasons include Toshiba\'s inability to keep their inventory of HD-DVD players up
And I just love how the HD-DVD camp loves to spin data like this...almost as bad as the gamespot forums
“I have gone into Best Buys and Fry’s in Seattle, Milwaukee, Richmond, and every time I go in, they are sold out of the [Toshiba] players,” said Kevin Collins, director of HD DVD evangelism at Microsoft’s consumer media technology group. “It’s the same thing with the Xbox 360 HD DVD drive. I think HD DVD title sales will be higher. There are more people wanting to buy the players than they are supplying.”
So we get the "I\'ve gone to bestbuys in the United States and everyone wants HD-DVD so badly its all gone" from a HD-DVD sales guy. I thought only people at message forums said things like that. Use numbers and facts, unless you are scared of them? Toshiba can\'t keep up with demand, and that doesnt always mean there is a very large demand. So blu-ray standalone players are closing in on the HD-DVD standalone players because Toshiba can\'t get the players out. And only 1 out of nearly every 100 XBOX 360 owners are buying the HD-DVD addon so I doubt it will be a large factor

True points. But I am not refering to BR and Betamax as being the same examples of formats as in being owned by Sony. I am only refering to BR and HD as the 2 competing formats.
Anyways which one has the biggest support so far? I think if there is something that can determine which will win is the support

Blu-ray support
Paramount
Warner Bros.
Disney (Buena Vista)
Fox
Lionsgate
MGM
Sony Pictures
HD-DVD support
Paramount
Warner Bros.
Univeral Studios
Warner Bros. is releasing their top movies only on HD-DVD. Why? You tell me. Bluray would be 3.5 - 1 right now if it had Warner\'s Batman Begins etc. Universal promised 100 HD-DVD only movies by the end of the year and 40 before half the year is up, but there is only release dates for 8 Univeral movies leading up to May meaning they have all of May and June to get 30 still unannounced HD-DVD exclusive movies out. No word on big movies like ET, Jaws, and Jurassic Park either.
In the end, whether bluray or HD-DVD wins, Universal will be known as the stuido that prolonged the format war...but who knows? Is M$ doing deals under the table with Warner and Univeral? $ talks.
Industry support is just as lopsided in Blu-ray\'s favor. But HD-DVD\'s biggest supporter is Microsoft, which some believe want both formats to fail so they can usher in the end of discs and the beginning of downloaded media only. Bill Gates says in speeches discs are a necessary evil, and I\'m sure they just want another way to be big brother in what they allow you to do with the content you download from them.
-
Whoah never knew of that tsrategy by Microsoft. So are they trying to monopolize in content distribution as well that was originally a retailer\'s income?
It kind of makes sense now that I think of it. With 360 they are relying heavilly in XBOX live. Sony is forced to compete in that but they sure aim to something else.
Bill Gates stated in the past that they will never leave the gaming industry even if its not profitable for them. So its quite clear that they are aiming to something irrelevant to gaming
edit: Or perhaps not? Lets say we were MS and saw Sony leading the gaming industry, probably tendencies to monopolizing. Even farther Sony is aiming to evolve the Playstation into an all entertainment system, which might distribute Linux. 2 things might happen. Shifting developers away from supporting directX - Windows gaming and shifting consumers away from entertainment and application usage in Windows in favor to something else.
The only way to stop them is to compete them directly since we are the only ones who can do it, and stay in the market until we take them out of the market, living us alone and only in it, to "steal" the userbase and support Sony created for our usage.

Microsoft\'s plan?
http://www.engadget.com/2006/02/15/switched-on-all-the-presidents-discs/
A little more
http://www.joystiq.com/2006/02/17/microsoft-wants-hd-dvd-to-fail/
Think about it. Microsoft does have nothing to gain by supporting HD-DVD. 100,000 HD-DVD 360 addons sold at $200 is pennies for Microsoft, so what\'s really in it for Microsoft?
They probably won\'t get either HD-DVD or blu-ray to fail, but they may suceed in prolonging the war until maybe far into 2008, which will in turn shorten either the lifespan of HD discs or will keep the userbase low enough until they can roll out some sort of Windows Vista HD movie download service. I\'m now more sure more then ever MS is behind Univeral for not supporting bluray at all and Warner Bros for releasing all its top movies only on HD-DVD
Look how they are releasing HD movies on Xbox Live. Now why would they give you the ability to download High Definition movies on XBOX LIVE if they were so concerned about HD-DVD discs winning? The XBOX live HD movie download store is a guinea pig, a testing grounds for their ultimate goal, ITUNES like HD movie downloads on Windows Vista...notice how that article says MS spent alot of time getting Vista Hollywood secure...
Something to think about...imagine a few years from now MS launches an ITUNES like store for movies that now comes preinstalled in the most popular OS in the World, Vista, and everyone starts buying their HD movies from them online. Yet more billions for MS...and if the sad thing is if they keep HD-DVD and bluray fighting long enough it just may be THEM that replaces DVDs.....
-
download HD services are a joke, presently.
there\'s not enough bandwidth, especially when a lrge portion of online users are still on dialup and DSL.
-
mm makes a good point there.
-
no he doesnt
lol
-
There are plenty of users with large bandwidth connections.
-
i think the HD downloads look great. I only have a 19" LCD monitor so I dont actually see HD and im not sure how it even looks on an HDTV. It looks like it\'d be HD.
I\'v only downloaded some HD trailers..not a full movie yet. Was going to but couldnt decide between superman, the descent, or the standard version of a scanner darkly
-
how long you think it takes to download 6GB vs the length of the movie.
-
how long you think it takes to download 6GB vs the length of the movie.
About 3.5 hours so not quite streaming yet. However, I\'ll soon be upgrading to a 10 mbit connection, so that\'d take, what, 1-2 hours? Not too bad.
-
not many people have access to 10mb+ (in the US, i understand other countries are vastly different)
catering to the elite is not a good business model.
-
At the very least Microsoft just wants to make life miserable for Sony...caught in the crossfire is unsuspecting HD-DVD or just maybe blu-ray owners that will be left with expensive paperweights. The longer this war goes on the more victims it will claim. It would be nearly over by now if MS joined the Blu-ray group (which Sony is just a part of) or remained neutral and didnt pay off Universal or Warner.
Microsoft doesnt care either way. Throw your money to them if you wish.
They\'ll take it.
Back on subject, sort of. Look at this Amazon.com sales chart of the 3 consoles.
Wii is red, 360 green, and PS3 blue
(https://psx5central.com/community/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg305.imageshack.us%2Fimg305%2F3237%2Fsystemsalesrank111recenqd6.jpg&hash=dd4b2096c3d82a6384f5a03348798481619dfb74)
Some explain the PS3\'s erratic behavior with whether it is in stock or not. But where it is curently at I think it will stay for a while until better games are released. 3rd place behind Wii with the 360 leading.
-
how long you think it takes to download 6GB vs the length of the movie.
if they say 3-4 hours..thats not TOO bad. Granted i could go to blockbuster in 5 minutes but im still stuck with normal dvd\'s that probably look worse than the HD downloads (on my monitor).
Can play games while its downloading or just leave the 360 on.
-
then what do you do with it after you watched it?
-
it "expires" a day after u watch it and gets knocked off ur harddrive. It\'s just a rental. I think after u buy/download it you have 2 days to watch it.
Im actually not sure how it gets off your harddrive since i havent done it yet. But i\'d imagine it does.

sounds like DIVX

Heh yeah, and we all know how that went... ouch.

Which is why I\'d go to Blockbuster and buy the movie in HD ;) Now if I only had an HD tv and an HD player (whichever wins this war is what I\'m buying, lol).

It\'s very much like the Betamax Vhs war in that there were two formats to buy. One that was going to stick around and the other which was just gonna suck money out of people\'s wallets.

Other than the HD-DVD add-on, which is manufactured by Toshiba, Microsoft has no interest (investments) in the format war, so the thought of MS having deals under the table in regards to HD-DVD is not substantial. Why, because Microsoft wouldn\'t benefit from it. Toshiba is likely the one to have a deal with regards to HD-DVD, and Microsoft is likely to have one concerning exclusive downloaded media.
Microsoft believes that downloads are the future of media, thus the push of a media-driven OS (Vista) and services like Live to deliver that media. Big Brother?! You mean like the rootkit that was found on Sony manufactured CD\'s that tracked user data. I believe they just got in trouble again for still selling discs that have that rootkit on it.

ever tried to uninstall IE or WMP?
it took a class action lawsuit to be able to do so.
download media is the devil

I suppose that depends how you look at things. It\'s the way things are moving, and even Sony has recognized that. Sony\'s own Phil Harrison stated that the PS4 might not even use discs but instead have a large hdd as they deliver games by download.
-
terrible idea.
wasn\'t that the Phantom\'s business model?
-
^^
Yeah. And we all know how well that went.
-
i think there was more to the collapse of the Phantom than downloadable games.
I personally dont think theyll do full-on downloadable games for Ps4. MAYBE Ps5. What u quoted (for lack of a better term) riku was speculation about a future that noone knows..almost as good as poop.
-

Think bigger, think evil
If Microsoft has nothing to lose or gain from either side, why would they back David (Toshiba & NEC) and not Goliath (BDA)? Or why didnt they just stay neutral like Apple? Believe me, they didnt just give Toshiba the right to make a HD-DVD add on. Microsoft salesman are in full force across America campaigning for and advertising for not only the HD-DVD addon but also standalone Toshiba HD-DVD players . That doesnt sound like someone who doesnt care about HD-DVD vs blu-ray. Make of it what you want
... walked into a store yesterday. Noticed 1 PS3 60gb(no space set aside for 20GB), no Xbox 360 premiums and 10 xbox cores. It took Sony 2 months to realize a \'core\' system is a joke. How long before MS does? Or maybe they enjoy addon sales?

you know what, i agreed with your speculation here. I still believe PS4 will uses optical disc media, and something similiar of HVD. Maybe PS5 "might" be full download HDD base...but i highly doubt this will be the case with PS4.

The whole evil empire motif of Microsoft is so tired. The fact of the matter is they do no more "evil" than any other company, Sony included.
Did you even read that article you posted? Microsoft wants the HD-DVD/blu-ray battle to go on so as to buy them time to establish downloaded media as a viable option. You\'ll have to show me proof of the MS salesmen actually selling HD-DVD. They\'re advocates, sure, for aforementioned reasons, but they\'re not actually selling the hardware.
People who can\'t understand the importance of the Core are idiots. I\'m sorry, but you need to know this. Not every nation is as developed as the U.S., Europe, and Japan. IIRC, Microsoft is selling the 360 in 37 countries so far. Some of them don\'t have broadband access what-so-ever, but play games. Tell me, what is the value of a system that has a 20GB HDD and Live accessories if you can\'t connect to Live? Would you agree that 20GB is overkill for basic gamesaves?
Also, making the HDD seperate encourages developers to make games for the core, thus worldwide more gamers can enjoy more games.
Having learned from the 360\'s predecessor, the HDD is not something Microsoft wanted to be financially burdened with again seeing as how it was one of the primary components that attributed to the Xbox never making a profit. The HDD never came down in cost.
I could go on and on, and even bring up some statistics proving that the majority of gamers are not broadband connected (some don\'t even care) and do not have HD televisions. They\'re not going to perceive value in something they don\'t have the means to appreciate, and wouldn\'t shell out $$$ for it.
-
not many people have access to 10mb+ (in the US, i understand other countries are vastly different)
catering to the elite is not a good business model.
Where I am people dont mind downloading GBs for days living their computers running 24hs a day.
You cant imagine how many games and movies they are downloading through adsl in GBs.
I dont think many would mind to do that
-
terrible idea.
wasn\'t that the Phantom\'s business model?
Only a part of it. But the reasons it died before it even launched were irrelevant to downloadable content, and also even if it did launch downloadable games would have been a wrong decision at that time.
Sony is thinking about it. Its not decided. According to how things evolve they will take the appropriate measurtes until then. Also I doubt it wont have disks. BR format isnt here only to dissapear 7 years later. They will continue to support it in their product which is aimed to have multible functions and usages. Limiting it wont be in their plans I am sure.
Anyways wether its a bad or good idea its true that buying all kinds of enterteinment media like movies and games is becoming even more common and widespread as time passes. I dont know when but I am postive that after some time buying entertainment through downloads could be as popular as disks or who knows might become more popular.
People love taking their USBs full of hundreds or thousands of MBs in music, programs etc. The iPOD started this trend and I wouldnt have found it strange if someday more advanced iPods would exist that will be able to store HD movies. This trend also gives birth to other similar products. Soon people might be having players connected on their TVs that play both disks and downloaded content compatible with USB storage devices. As people find more convenient copying these files on multible devices and carrying them through USBs and iPods these devices will rely less on disks and more on file management

You\'ll have to show me proof of the MS salesmen actually selling HD-DVD. They\'re advocates, sure, for aforementioned reasons, but they\'re not actually selling the hardware.
http://hddvd.highdefdigest.com/feature_microsofthddvdinterview.html
If thats not strong Microsoft support of HD-DVD and it\'s products, I dont know what is.
They are using HD-DVD as a smokescreen to slow HD disc progression toward mainstream and as a guinea pig for testing their codecs
Undeveloped nations? And I dont think its going out on a limb to suggest undeveloped nations account for a small amount of the 360 userbase.
Not including the HDD in the core version was a mistake, like it or not. Just how much trouble could it be to include a 20GB HDD? I\'m sure gamers would rather spend extra money on a HDD then having to buy what is it, $40 64mb memory cards? That alone pushes the price of the core near the premium. Anybody getting a core is a complete fool, whether they have access to Xbox Live or not. The fact is what Microsoft decided to include in the core and premium 360s was a mistake.
Having learned from the 360\'s predecessor, the HDD is not something Microsoft wanted to be financially burdened with again seeing as how it was one of the primary components that attributed to the Xbox never making a profit. The HDD never came down in cost.
Seriously, how expensive can a 20GB HDD be? There is 100GB 2.5 inch HDDs out there for around $80. You\'re telling me 1/5th that size is a financial burden?
But in the end, thats what it comes down to. Microsoft designed the 360 to make money for them, not to be future proof. Sony is taking huge hits financial wise to make the PS3 futureproof. As for the 360 it will probably be replaced sooner rather then later by the rumored XBOX 2.5 (HDMI 120GB HD). The more I look at the more the 360 and wii look ancient compared to PS3
And if Microsoft was so concerned about price, why include all those 360 extras in the premium?
I could go on and on, and even bring up some statistics proving that the majority of gamers are not broadband connected (some don\'t even care) and do not have HD televisions. They\'re not going to perceive value in something they don\'t have the means to appreciate, and wouldn\'t shell out $$$ for it.
Its sad Microsoft decided to include tons of extras in the premium that most will never use accoridng to your \'statistics\'. All 360s having HDDs would have been a + to developers.
I\'m not picking on the 360 here. I think both cores of the PS3 and 360 are a joke. They should not exist.
-
they exist for one reason, false perception of value for the higher tier price
-
Every console is outselling the ps3. Its too expensive. But so fucking what that how it is. Stop dreaming of sony selling millions right now. There are no good games for it. And 360 had a good lead. For the life of me I cannot understand why people seem to love the wii to no extent. The console has no interest or value to me. But hey to each its own. I would take anyone\'s ps3 right now.
-

I have been wondering the same damn thing for a long time.
The ps3 will be awesome for me once stuff like shadow of the collosus 2 and god of war 3 come out. March should be good for the ps3 though..and 2008 when those games should be out

Considering they\'re tip-toeing around the 2 million mark as we sit here...

shhhhhhhhh!

Im talking far as selling like the cheaper consoles. I know they sold a million already.

So it\'s not a dream, then? ;)

Curiosity and the false impression of the concept "hey I can control my game like the real thing" and for a cheap price to try

Yes, I know, but they are not selling the hardware. They\'re not taking a loss on it, and when and if it goes down they won\'t feel a thing.
Undeveloped nations? And I dont think its going out on a limb to suggest undeveloped nations account for a small amount of the 360 userbase.
I\'d say you\'re correct. The issue is that Microsoft wants to sell as many Xbox 360\'s as possible, and to do that they have to make it appeal to as many people as possible, including those other nations.

No, it wasn\'t. Financially and from a marketing perspective (see mm\'s post), it was an excellent decision.

I always get a kick out of Sonyphiles hanging on to Sony\'s every word. The PS3 will be replaced someday, and it will be old technology. I\'m gonna go ahead and peg 2012 as the year, a 6 year lifespan just like its predecessors.
And if Microsoft was so concerned about price, why include all those 360 extras in the premium?
They charged for them. Microsoft is making money off the Premium since a couple months ago.

No, it was a great marketing move to appeal to both those on the HD front and those who aren\'t quite there yet. If you knew anything about technology adoptiong, it\'s always those on the forefront that buy up the latest tech-toys. Of course the Premium is going to sell to them first, just like the loaded PS3 is selling more now. That will change as those products mature, drop in price, and start to get to more people.
-
Oh no not the chopped posts again

call me when microsoft or nintendo have a console with a 6 year lifespan.
oh, plenty of new games are still being released for PS1 by the way

NES, SNES, N64 all had games released at least 6 years after its launch...should I be giving you a phone call?
-
last game for N64 was Tony Hawk\'s Pro Skater 3 released aug 2002, slightly less than 6 years after N64 launch date.
-
2 out of 3 ain\'t bad.

PS2 have a 6 year life span?

PS2 have a 6 year life span?
I can\'t believe it only had a 6 year life span. PSX went on for damn near 10 before being cut out of production. It seems like not too long ago when ps2 was released. Although, it was most of my teen years too.
-
i think the ps2 has few more years left in it and it still has the potential to release AAA games...*looks at reviews for god of war 2*...some critics has stated that this game rivals ps3*early ps3 games* in terms of graphics....if other companies weren\'t jumpin\' ship to concentrate on next gen, i\'m sure we would see alot more stellar titles. i gotta be honest tho,...i don\'t remember that last AAA title i bought for the psx before my jump to ps2, but i do know for a fact that god of war 2 will most likely be my last game for the system unless another game of this caliber is produced.
update..*it looks like our friend geelo, j-lo, however the f**k you pronounce it, has set up his bootleg electronics gig in the central forums*

I agree with you. I stopped buying PSX games when I got my PS2. But I think if a game peaks my interest, I\'m gonna still buy PS2 games. I mean the graphics on PS2 now are using the full potential of the system and they look great. I do regret stopping to buy PSX games because now I have a list of games I\'m still trying to get.

PS2 have a 6 year life span?
2007 has God of War 2 coming out. It launched in 2000 or 2001?
-
What I want to know is why we can\'t be happy that all three are selling well. It seems like in order to prove one system is doing well, everyone has to bash another one. Who knows, maybe the market is finally large enough to support three consoles without one going under, especially since nintendo has been cutting itself a nice niche market just for itself.

i don\'t care which console sells, i just love that the internet is full of people like riku to give me amusement.
-
The PlayStations had incredible longevity. PS2 will still be getting games for a while due to the user base. They\'ll likely be EA games and crappy movie tie-ins from here on out for the most part, but that\'s what the people still using that system will want. Cheap games that look cool on the shelf or have to do with a fun movie that they or their children just saw.
Xbox had a very short life, although I guess there\'s a trickly of games to it still. Cube is damn near dead in the water at this point, though, right?
-
PS2 have a 6 year life span?
Sorry, not what I meant. I meant to say that there will be a new PS in 6 years, and developers will eventually move on. Futureproof? To a certain extent, which really calls in to question what that term means.
-
The worst case scenario is Sony pushing the PS4 in fall of \'12 ( less than 6 years from now). But the way this console can be upgraded via patch, it would surprise me if it conks out by 2012.
Yet, I would equally be surprised if sony sticks to their 2016 plan for the PS4.
The kind of technology we\'ll have by then is unimagineable.
-
leaps in technology are becoming smaller and smaller.
the costs are what will be unimaginable
-
No floating cars or skateboards by then, eh? How sucky.
-

Heh, you sound like you just got out of a Nintendo strategic planning meeting. :)
-
Just to make you guys feel a bit better. In South Africa we have just got the 1Mb line launched here for ADSL...you guys have no idea how good you all really have it there!
-
That\'s because America is the best :)
-
ehh we\'re actually trailing behind the small euro countries that don\'t have to worry about connecting 3000 miles worth of country. sammy can chime in with his connection speed and what he pays. Beats even Verizon FIOS iirc
-
The way pc graphics change so fast I do not want to play a console with shitty graphics for 10 years. I stopped playin ps2 and xbox years ago.
The only reason they are still making games for the console is because ps3 is so expensive and millions more have a ps2. It\'s not because the console is such a graphical power horse that was built by sony to last 10 years. There is still profit to be made because the millions of people that have ps2 and don\'t own a ps3 why would they not still make games for the consoles.

brilliant deduction reasoning powers!
sherlock holmes would be proud.

Anyone know of the next gen hardware sales? The total ones? Everytime I google I get holiday numbers.

There\'s supposed to be an approximation in here

thanks!

www.nextgenwars.com (http://www.nextgenwars.com) is supposed to be another guess. (Haven\'t verified link. Good luck.)

I prefer nexgenwars (http://nexgenwars.com/). Very simple counter.

ahhh yes so it seems the tables have turned for now!
-
i really hope the wii stops selling so i wont have to hear "OMG I KNEW IT!" or "the wii is the best thing EVAR and sales show it!" talk for the next millenium
-
Well, I would like to buy a Wii but Nintendo pulled out of South Africa, on top of that the PS3 sells for so much more than what you guys pay that it is actually daylight robbery to buy one here - Goes for about $890
-
Hahaha. Sucks for South Africa :)
-
Ps3 is NOT selling out. You can just walk in and buy them in my town.
-
Tons available over here. I am sure once they get some AAA games units will then corresponded with the growing demand. Overall it seems M$ and Nintendo made all the right moves this generation, while Sony in it\'s overly Confident state, made some unwise decisions.
Personally I plan to pick a PS3 up after it\'s price decreases while it\'s Library increase. 2 years from now I will get one.
-
The next Metal Gear, Final Fantasy, and Gran Turismo franchise games will each correspond to a big jump in sales. I know that\'s what I\'ve decided to wait for.
-
Absolutely.
Also I ought to mention if SONY can pull another GT Spectacle for the PS3 that shit will fly. Even to this day I am still amazed of vivid and real GT looks on the ps2
-

Ditto. I\'m hoping (keyword hoping) to have PS3 by the time MGS4 comes out. Then definitely Gran Turismo.
