Post by: CHIZZY on February 13, 2007, 03:36:31 PM
here I am posting from our new imac...pretty sexy, just got the 17" but got the 2 GHZ processor and the 1 gig ram/wireless jammy upgrade. now if I can just figure out the damn thing I\'ll be OK... my bro\'s fiancee is a pro graphic designer, so she\'s sick on these things...I just need to learn some shortcuts and I\'ll be cool. Any good ones from our mac army would be great....

I think my next computer is gonna end up being a Mac. With them using Intel stuff, I can run both OS\'s and get the best of both worlds.

Congrats Chizzy! You\'ll like it a lot, I\'m sure. :)

Titan, why would you want to run anything other than OS X? :D The only use for XP/Vista that I can see is games or some obscure program you just can\'t live without.

Oh shortcuts... F9-F12 does some nifty stuff with exposé and shit. OPT+W closes windows. OPT+Q quits programs (if you just close the window the program will still be running, a little something to get used to), OPT+M minimizes the window and puts it into the dock. OPT+H hides it instead. OPT+TAB is the Mac version of ALT+TAB\'ing.

If you run Camino (and you should, it\'s a great browser) you should remember to enable tabs in options. Dunno why they didn\'t enable it by default.

When I think of more I\'ll post it. Otherwise folks, feel free to add to the pile.

control = the apple key

Most shortcuts on the mac are the same thing as the PC just switch the control key and the apple (I think they call it the option key) key.  Bah, its been too long since I\'ve worked on a mac.  A number of my friends have  macbook pros and they love them.  I\'m sure if it hasn\'t already, it\'ll grow on you.

There\'s still a control key on the Mac keyboard. The command key is now there instead of the alt key. The command (Apple key) serves functions in place of both, but the control key is still used as well.

The lack of cross-platform software compatibility is what\'s really pissing me off about Macs...which is why I\'m on Windows again. Sure, it\'ll grow on you, but I don\'t really like OS X at the moment. My Mac is collecting dust. It\'ll be better when I get a new Intel Mac so I can run both OS\'s simultaneously. But if I have to run just one OS right now, it\'s going to be XP.

The "pretty GUI" just isn\'t doing as much for me as it used to.

What does the stability do for you then? Or the lack of spyware? The lack of virus?

As a new XP user, I hate XP. But the Mac I\'ve used here at work, I hate even more. I think it might be the retarded mouse and completely unintuitive desktop. Not sure how old it is, tho.

Unless you\'re incompetent and/or retarded, spyware and viruses really aren\'t a problem. And neither is stability, as long as you know how to keep Windows maintained, which really actually doesn\'t take much effort as long as you know what you\'re doing. I\'m not going to argue Windows stability versus OS\'s with a UNIX/Linux core, because the latter is more stable. However, OS X does crash and when it does, it crashes HARD. The term for OX crashing is called a "kernel panic" and it is not a pleasant experience. OS X also needs to be maintained, despite popular belief, but everyone uses the spyware/virus/trojan/your mom excuse when it comes to talking about the two. It really isn\'t an issue, but since most people would rather not learn how to maintain something that contains their valuable data, the lazy way out would be to just not care...or get a Mac. Macs can be very easily hacked and that has been demonstrated time and time again. People can take over your entire system without you being aware. Just because Macs have a lot less viruses and spyware does not make them invulnerable to other means of attack. And Macs do get viruses from time to time. They are just less frequent, but with the advent of an ever-increasing userbase, more and more people are going to want to find ways to attack Mac users. It\'s just not first on their priority list because Microsoft owns most of the OS market.

I love Macs. And I love Windows. I know how to keep them both maintained and rarely have issues. Once in a blue moon I get some kind of virus or spyware on Windows and the moment it\'s on my system it is eradicated immediately.

There are much better arguments for using OS X over Windows XP, but the virus/spyware argument is just lame.

And you think the Windows desktop is intuitive? It hasn\'t changed much since Windows 95. And you can use any USB mouse on OS X, not just the one it comes with. Just thought you should know...in case you miss the whole right-clicking thing...although the new Macs have two-button mice.

I call BS. OS X can\'t be \'very easily hacked\'.

Also I\'ve been using Windows on a daily basis since 1993 so I\'m not exactly a n00b. But at some point it just becomes a chore and I\'ve seen especially XP do some mindblowing (bad) stuff out of the blue. I don\'t miss it one bit.

I\'m really struggling with the file system, but I\'ll get it... I still have my PC downstairs as my studio rig, but I\'m tempted to get another one of these for that, too...

thanks for the tips, another thing I can\'t get past is the lack of thumbnails...any way to enable those? (keep in mind that I get to spend about 10 - 15 mins max on anything lately, so I may sound lazy...)

Yeah Macs are cool if you like paying 40% more for a PC that does not allow major upgrades.

What really pisses me and I find to be quite very annoying macs is the fact that they force you to use there monitor. What I mean is unless you shell out for the Mac tower Pro Desktops you are stuck having to buy your PC integrated with a MAc monitor. LAME LAME.......

Forget the Mini Mac it is garbage.

Side Note: WHat\'s the deal with the Mac Pro using 2 separate dual CPUS??? Why bother just stick with dual core or the new quad cores comming out.
Title: well, I swore I\'d never do it...but hello apple!
Post by: nO-One on February 17, 2007, 08:36:55 AM
well, that crappy mac monitor is the same panel as the higher end 20"+ dell models, and most other companies use the same panel. So getting that panel isn\'t bad. And why 2 dual cpu\'s? because it\'s the "pro" machine and those are Xeons not Cores and when they were introduced there weren\'t any quad cpu\'s and IIRC there still aren\'t any quad cpu\'s with a high enough yield to mass produce for the Mac Pro\'s.

It helps to do just a little research before trying to criticize something.

Chizzy, on the whole thumbnail issue, when in a folder press command+J (also known as view options)

The slider for the icons size just drag it up and it should start using thumbnails, you can choose this as the default view for all folders or just this folder.
If you still don\'t get a thumbnail just a huge .jpg icon it\'s because the file preview was lost while transferring the files, happens about 80% of the time when moving the files from one computer to another be it via internet, ethernet, ftp or just anything.

To get the preview again you must resave the file, this is just the way image files work and isn\'t limited to macs, windows or any operating system. Quick and easy way that I\'ve used is a batch process in photoshop, just tell it to open the images and resave them. Should be doable in iPhoto or other image management apps.

I am of course assuming you wanted thumbs for your images. If your wanting video\'s it get\'s trickier, but I usually just browse in column view, when the file is clicked the finder will show a small preview, grap the first frame from the video, granted that the file is something quicktime understands.

Haha. Arguing about the monitors? I just think Macs look gay. That\'s all. I really have nothing against them. The look of the computers themselves I really hate. I had my opinions before I started to mess around with OS X at my school. I have to say, I picked it up faster than I did XP. Just hate the mouse, lol. What I\'m thinking is when I go for my next computer, put Vista and OS X on the same computer, which would be a PC. I\'d get the best of both worlds and worst case scenerio, I don\'t use one of them and take it off my computer.

I\'ve seen OS X do some mind-blowning (bad) stuff out of the blue as well. I\'ve been using OS X since the first Beta release of OS X and it does some amazingly weird things as well. You\'ve been sucked into the hype very quickly, it seems.

Maybe you ought to do a little research yourself. First off i never said they were crappy. Also the MAC monitors are using lg/philips panels. Dell uses AU-optronics, lg/philps and Samsung(mosty samsung for the 20-24). None the less I want to be able to select my own custom monitor and not be stuck with a monitor that is fused to my PC. please don\'t state that most other companies use the same panel to the macs when that is false. Your still thinking 2 years ago when dell\'s top panels were using the lg/philps the same as the mac 30\' and 24. Things have changed since then.

As you can clearly see I was asking a question here see the question mark, I was not criticizing it\'s use hence the side note. I was only curious why they had not started to use core2 quad based cpus, since they are available.

Dude...when\'s the last time you kept up-to-date reading Apple news? I have two different subscriptions to Mac magazines and I frequent Apple news sites all the time because I still like Macs and I find it interesting. I\'ve been using Macs for years, but you have your head so far up your ass due to your newbie OS X usage that you think Macs are invincible. They\'ve sucked you into the hype. Experienced OS X users know better than this and protect themselves accordingly. OS X is a lot more stable though, I\'ll give you that. My next laptop is going to be a MacBook. I just don\'t have the need for a 10 inch thick gaming laptop. I\'ll reserve gaming for the PCs I build. Plus the virtualization is all I need for most of the Windows apps I use.

my problem with the aesthetics of osx is it\'s to kiddle looking, XP even more so.

I hate OS\'s that have bright backgrounds in the applets etc... I prefer dark backgrounds with lighter text. What I would love if apple would give the option like XP does to change the look with a different theme, a dark professional one.

So far my Ubuntu(linux distro)and fedora does all this sadly it\'s linux(not a mainstream OS)

Well congrats on your two magazine subscriptions. I also frequent Mac news sites and blogs and have done so for years (even though I only recently got a Mac). I still very much doubt that OS X can "be very easily hacked". Sure it\'s not invincible but I\'ve NEVER come across anything stating it being "VERY EASILY hacked". Somehow you haven\'t provided any sources for your statement yet, so I\'ll just take it that you are in fact the one with your head in your ass.

But you\'re so l33t so I must be wrong. After all, I believe the hype!111.

My original point was that the panel is hardly a low end one, but I do admit as you pointed out that I haven\'t been keeping up with Dell\'s latest choices in Panels.

Regarding the bright UI, you might find it interesting that "supposedly" with Leopard a new UI will be introduced called Illuminous, or Luminous but it\'s supposed to look closer to the UI in Apple\'s pro line of programs like Shake for example. Weather it replaces Aqua or will accompany it like the Graphite Aqua theme nobody knows.

Regarding OS X being easily hacked, it\'s true but not that much. Like most security threats it get\'s blown out of proportion on just about every platform, but all in all OS X due to it\'s underpinnings and the fact a lot fewer people use it is and will be for a long while more secure than Windows.

The panel on my laptop is the highest end panel Dell offered at the time. They had 3 choices and I figured that if I got the best graphics card they offered, I may as well get the best panel. I\'m glad I did. My roommate has the exact laptop as me but its lower end and the difference on his monitor vs. mine is huge. Mine displays the colors much more crisply and vividly. The only downfall is it has kind of a glossy finish on the panel which is a pain in the ass to clean with some of the cleaners I\'ve bought for laptop panels.

Post by: NVIDIA256 on February 20, 2007, 01:08:52 PM
Glossy panels are usually the best for pictures and editing etc..Of course there downside is they must be sheilded from light.

no-One if apple introduces a new theme that is much darker in nature with more of a pro look I might get myself a mac mini. OSX seems to be the next logical choice considering that Vista while pretty, is a disaster, it\'s buggy, coded sloppy, drm infected resource hog. As I mentioned While i am pleased with the Gnome desktop for Linux, it\'s by no means a practical mainstream OS. Linux is best for IT people and Ubber Computers enthusiasts.

I just hate how apple charges such a High premium for there hardware and why must they always fuse there computers in the mid range. Apple cannot replace the many functions that my IMB/PC is capable of, however allot of people now own both camps.
