I\'ll see it tonight. Wanted to avoid the teenagers on opening weekend.

Not since gay porn have their been so many bulging biceps and ripped abdominals on the big screen at one time. Read that in a review of the movie.

I don\'t know what the critics are slamming this movie for, they are making it sound like it was supposed to be something more than mindless action. A lot of them seem like they were going into this thing expecting a historically accurate epic movie. It has a giant rhino and monsters in the trailers for god sakes!!!

I haven\'t seen it yet, i\'ll see it sometime before friday, and if I have to use my brain even once in this movie....well I will be pissed. More swords! more blood! more hunky dudes!

EDIT: Thats what i\'m talking about! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0lW9gw5TwxE

agreed, although I\'d see it again in theaters (something I don\'t do often) it would have been nice if 1/5th of the movie focused on Leonaitus (sp?) turning from a boy into a soldier/man in the first person rather than a quick 5min synopsis in the 3rd.  I think we would have had a better appreciation for the Spartan way of life and been more concerned with the outcome.

Leonidas

Spartans prefer the company of sausages, but clams? Not so much.

i haven\'t seen this yet....but when i first saw the previews i thought this could have easily been a "god of war" movie, the themes and monsters & beasts within the previews that i\'ve seen looked great and going by the previews alone, i thought that this would be a good flick. i\'ll probably wait for dvd for this one tho.

WE ARE SPARTA!!!!!

IMO people underestimate the historical accuracy of this movie......sure the rhinos / monsters and the way the spartans fought was a little.......different, the events were basically right. At birth Spartan children were examined and if they had any defects they were tossed at that spot shown in the movie, they grew up training and at 7 entered the military. The scene where Leonidas went to the oracle (historically it was the oracle ar Delphi, dont know if this was the same as the movie) but got a little different messege but it was in the same area. As the movie said, it was 300 spartans with 7000ish other greeks. The group held off the persians and killed around 20,000 of them before, just as the movie had shown, the Persians were able to get behind them. One of my favorite scenes from the movie was when they launched the arrows at the Spartans, this actually happened and the arrows were ineffective because of the Spartan\'s armor.

One of my favorite movies in a while :)

People "underestimated" the historical accuracy of the movie because it was...historically inaccurate.  Sure the basics were there but the majority of the movie was pure fiction, which I have no problem with.  I didn\'t expect it to be accurate.

Ru Paul thought he was gonna get some Spartan ass for a minute there.....until Leo walked away. And when Ru Paul asked him to kneel before him...that was pure gold.

Whatever we understand about what ACTUALLY happened at Thermopylae comes from ancient greek historians like Herotodus.  It is well understood that the earliest historians did not observe the same standards of objectivity and factuality that we do today.  To make a point about how realistic this film is would therefore be ill advised.  We will never know what actually happened.  The movie can still be enjoyed strictly as an entertainment product.

If you are intrigued by the epigram recited as a voiceover near the end of 300, you might want to seek out a relatively unknown film that draws a parallel between this battle and the Vietnam war.  It\'s entitled "Go Tell The Spartans" and it features Burt Landcaster and Craig Wasson.  It\'s pretty good actually.  http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0077617/ (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0077617/)

but one random thought for those that watched it (hopefully the spoiler tag works)

***SPOILER****
i think the mystical stuff like the rhinos was just exagerations from the dude telling the story. Might be stating something that everyone knows, if so, my bad. But my friend didnt think of it that way. One thing that personally got old was the slow motion fighting, but thatd be nitpicking
I ve seen the movie a few weeks ago.

Loved the art direction but in terms of history it was a disgrace.

Too many historical mistakes and too many exaggerations.

I also disliked how the Persians were presented as barbarians, corrupted savages and monstrosities when in reality they had one of the oldest and most glorious ancient civilizations

Historical accuracy was the last thing this movie was going for. I don\'t get why people don\'t understand that Frank Miller was simply inspired by the battle of thermopalye and everything else came from his imagination.

Thats why it had rhinos 10 times their normal size, a troll / cyclopse thing, a dude with swords for arms, Electric guitar rock rift playing during the fight scenes and nine inch nails playing in the trailers.

Its a comic book movie.

I know it was based on a comic book and personally I believe it should have remeained a comic book.

I dont care if Frank Miller was inspired by it and made a fantasy comic based on it. I take such creations seriously.

He could have given credit to both civilizations, show their real character and at the same time use his imagination.

The exaggerations isnt necessarilly the imagination. But how he used that imagination. He alienated the civilizations completely. He could have kept the rhinos, he could have kept Ephialtis\'s appearance since ephialtis in English is translated to Nightmare and to show his corrupted, disgusting mind and treachery, as well as other imaginary elements without completely destroying their character.

But his "imagination" went out of proportion, presenting a false impression of each civilization and such alterations in history are a "sacrilege" to human history. There was almost nothing "Greek" or "Persian" in either sides

Most importantly he failed to depict the glory of each civilization, he failed to transmit their virtues and even some important events were completely taken out or misused. It looked like another attempt to commercialize culture and hisory in order to sell and shows no respect to the historical event.

Historical inaccuracy wasnt refering to the "imaginative" part either. But the events themselves. For example the fight inside the thermopyles was what made that particular event so much known in books. Yet Leonidas\' strategy wasnt succesfully shown and neither did the fight occure inside the thermopyles other than a few moments in the beginning. Also what annoyied me was that there was no use of his words "Molon Lave\' ". It was translated to "come and get us", which completely loses the power of the ancient saying which is important. The translation makes it sound like a commonly used line in thousands of cliche\' movies.

What the hell happened to Xerxis?

Uni you do know that exaggerations in the story were explained by the in-movie narrator exaggerating the tale to impress the others, right?

Also, by your logic he could have taken the opportunity to create a historical reenactment of the U.S. Civil War. He could\'ve done anything. But he made a fantasy movie.

Uni, when the Persians demanded they drop their weapons, Leonidas replied

"Come Get it."

He didn\'t say "Come get us".

I didn\'t enjoy "Alexander" but I sure as hell enjoyed 300. Despite it\'s inaccuracies. There were some truths: the Spartan elders didn\'t want all of their armies to fight since it was so close to some Spartan holy week or some sort.

Xerxes may have been a great leader to the Persians and was responsible for releasing the enslaved Israelites....but he was still the one who invaded Greece. So the hell with his great civilization. Sparta was Sparta. What else did you want to see? The ass fucking of the queen was good enough. :D

I agree with you about the comic book movie thing and I was kind of expecting it. I must say that I was even excited about the trailer too. The thing is also expected other things as well apart from what I ve sen, as a respect to both civilizations and the historical event.

But after I saw the movie I thought that it apart from the inclusion of imaginination(which is fine by me) everything else wasnt done right. The implementation of his imagination and the depiction of the story atleast for me should have been different and better.

Since I take such historical events seriously I am easier annoyied when they are being used in some ways only to sell.

Seriously, I wasn\'t kidding. If you can find the History channel show "The Last Stand of the 300" I know you would enjoy it.

They focused on all aspects of that war. Not just  thermopylae but Themistocles and how he was in charge of the greek navy that day and how his success was essential to the success at  thermopylae.

Also the greek culture that you spoke of, Sparta\'s in particular. They also go into depths about why Xerces was attacking in the first place.

I think its going to take a little while though. But iv noticed that dvd\'s come out super fast now..the departed and children of men were on dvd in no time. I remember having to wait forever for dvd\'s to come out..so long that id forget the movie existed and that i wanted it on dvd.

haha. The cannon ball part was hilarious.

dumb question, and i hope clowd doesnt see this, but will 300 only be on blu-ray or will it on hd-dvd too? 300 would almost convince me to get the hd-dvd 360 addon..if not, looks like ill get it when all the good games for ps3 come out and end up getting one

Since it\'s warner nerds on AVS are speculating it will be Total HD, meaning both blu-ray and HD-DVD on the same disc.  Space is lost and quality suffers, so we hate it by default.

My department hates the home video department.  Bunch of useless idiots.  I had to end up doing some of their work because they lost track of things.
