I\'m glad to hear that Yamaoka is taking it back to it\'s roots.

The proof will be in the pudding... I find they always say they are going back to the roots or mention a favorite episode because it brings in a big fan base, but often times the \'modernizations\' and \'new implementations\' in reality change the gameplay drastically....

Still, looking forward to another installment in the series, even if I never played through a couple of them to the end...

hmmm, SH2 was really great for me...whereas SH3 was kind of a letdown for me.

Upon reading lukewarm SH4 reviews i skipped it.

I\'m in the same boat as Knotter on this one. Loved the first 2, didn\'t care much for the 3rd, skipped the 4th.

I don\'t own any of the 3 new consoles anymore so I guess i\'ll miss this one too.

Silent Hill 1 was easily the scariest game ever when it came out. Problem is they were never able to replicate that...and the game play was never a strong point.

I loved 1. Probably my favourite

I enjoyied SH2 a bit, and was left with many questions at the end which kind of created a sense of dissapointment. The game ended unexpectedly. But after I found details on the game\'s plot and what really happened I completely changed my opinion on it and loved it. There are SOOO many things I didnt quite get before0

I liked 3 a lot. The problem was that the game was too short. Way too short.

4 didnt feel like a SH game that much. It was a good game and had an awesome concept. That concept if it was done well it could have been a superb game. Thats why the beginning of the game was very interesting but later on it started to get boring due to the continuous shifts between your room and the other world. It took away from the "convincingness" of the game\'s world.
It also had a lot of tiring revisits of the same locations.

Unfortunately, i haven\'t played SH1 yet. SH2\'s main story ending had an effect like the 6th sense, but then at least twice as good/intense imo. The artistic level design spoke metaphores for James\' inner mind & hidden thoughts.
After (initially) being let down by Metal Gear Solid 2, SH2 & Ico came to me as gifts from Heaven.
SH3 ; i kinda enjoyed it, but after the middle of the game, i felt the plot became a little convoluted & parody of itself.
Interface ... well i hope SH5 will also be clunky and stuff... it\'s a charming characteristic.

You should definetely try 1. :)

Btw Silent Hill: Origins is due out soon I think

Gametrailers had some new videos and it looked brilliant for a PSP game

i\'ve always liked the silent hill series,...and until resident evil 4 came out,..i thought the silent hill series was better than resident evil...that said i did enjoy silent hill 1 - 4...even tho one was a playstation game at the time even with it\'s dated graphics it was deeply scary...afterwards i thought prt 3 was the scariest,...playin\' prt 3 at night in some of those locations still has me shook...prt 3 was also the strongest graphically as well....

prt 4 was okay it gets kinda crazy with what happens in your room,...but the combat felt clumsy, and going from your room to the "other worlds" just kinda didn\'t feel right....and who made the sound effects for those nurses in that hospital?....that was thee worst sound effects ever....i commend then for tryin\' somethin\' new tho...at least with the silent hill series you almost always get new stories with new characters,...while with res. evil...at least at the end of the game you knew there was going to be countdown to some explosion...:p....i\'am lookin\' foward to the next installation in the series tho...

hahaha yeah got to agree with the sound the nurses made.  It got very funny at the stairs especially. If you manage to take one down and was still alive, it would fall from the stairs and make that stupid voice continuously as it falls down from them

And indeed the combat felt clamsy

The difference in perception of sound effects is the difference with Japanese gamers - no this is not BS theory - often, Japanese gamers have different way of feeling about particular sound FX ;

In MGS4, the bipedal Metal Gear Gekkou\'s sound like (Japanese) cows. Kojima stated that they make those sounds on purpose since it\'s soothing to Japanese gamers as they associate that sound with calm & peaceful Japanese country side ; thus it\'s a mental warfare tactic. - to conclude ; Silent Hill composer Yamaoka is very strict and thoughtful about his work ; the sounds do make 100% sense to Japanese gamers.

The clumsy fighting mechanics ? That\'s "part"  of the survival horror game tradition. RE used to be like that until RE4 too, right ?

I totally agree with you.

But you have to play SH4 to know what we are talking about. All silent hill games had a "clamsy" control system. But in 4 it seemed mostly as a camera and technical issue. Also about the sound, it seemed like it was put randomly and not well sampled. It wasnt at all like the nurses from the previous games.

It gave the impression that it was used as a "placeholder" and neglected. When you hit monsters on previous SHs they make a variety of screaming noises. The nurse in SH4 had only one sample. If you hit them with your pipe, you cant hear the impact of your pipe. You hear a very weird mono sound and everything else seems muted

i was reading on some other website that there was a possiblity of them doing this silent hill during the daytime hours....i guess it\'s achievable since prt 1 and 2 was basically done during the day with the fog providing cover, but the article made it seem like as if they wanted to use sunlight throughout the whole game...we\'ll see..

*edit i found the article it\'s not that long tho*

FM: Hello Akira Yamaoka and thank you for reporting to us on Silent Hill series. Our number one question is that on Silent Hill 5. How far has the production come along as it was announced a few years ago.

Akira: I cannot say much about the development of the game but i can say we are working on a new unique idea of fear in daylight and the game will play like Silent Hill 2\'s psychological roots.

FM: As the famous silent hill composer, will you be doing the music for Silent Hill 5?

Akira: I will be composing the music which has started being made now, but i am a far from finished. I cannot say anything about the music or the type im making but i can say that fans of the previous soundtracks should be pleased with its outcome.

FM: Alot of speculation has been made about the platform the game will play on, which can we expect?

Akira: We cannot say yet but we are hoping to carry on the plans of the earlier silent hill platforms.

FM: You earlier mentioned the concept of "scary daytime" can you expand on that?

Akira: Its a hard idea to explain, but you really have to look at the scene to understand. In a way like the Resident Evil 5 trailer where it was not the middle of the night and the vision was clear but the fear was still there. It will not be the same but that is an explanation of the idea of having fear in daylight. It is a concept that we are working on at the moment still.

FM: We have missed the Tokyo Game show chance to see silent hill 5 trailer, will we see any new informations on it next?

Akira: I cannot say when or where we will make the idea public but it is in production

Ow, ffs ... please let that NOT be the case.

SplinterCell Double Agent went to daylight for 50% of the game as well ; which was the supposedly innovation of SC. * sigh *

Well, most SC fans ( incl. me ) really didn\'t like that. SilentHill 4 was mostly lit as well ? RE5 is doing daylight horror too. Please let SH5 not ape RE5 !

The teaser trailer is kind of nice. The first 2 screenshots fail to impress though... well, we\'ll see how it\'ll shape up.
