That deep space field I guarantee either doesn\'t look like that or doesn\'t exist.

I don\'t get it.. this isn\'t exactly sci-fi, and it\'s not like they\'re putting a picture that has stars spelling out hello or something..... it\'s basic science, you can see more and more with better and better telescopes yourself, just try it. By the time you get to a university sized 14-20 incher, you\'ll be seeing all sorts of stuff that was invisible to the naked eye.

Oy. That wasn\'t my point. They were there billions of years ago but they were saying they were like 100 billion years or so. The galaxies could have merged, died (through natural star deaths), or migrated. Nothing you saw in that picture looks that way today because of the time it took light to take to reach here. I also heard one theory that it was the older universe (dunno how true that is).
On a side note, NASA is making a new telescope thats supposed to be even more powerful than the Hubble. Look forward to that within the next 10 years.

Plus, you\'ll get your comeuppance.... when your child is rebelling and smoking and you can\'t get them to listen to you anymore.

All this is still, no pun intended, up in the air. Everytime they peer out into deep space, the age of the universe gets older coz...well...turns out we were wrong about its age last time we looked.

which begs the question AGAIN....do you think there is intelligent life forms outside of our solar system? and i\'m not talkin\' simple cell life, i mean humanoid type beings....i know it\'s been asked a million times, but it does make for some interesting conversation...

I wonder if the universe even has an age. Mathematically speaking, if the time of the universe is a line (not a ray), then there is no beginning or an end. I think the universe has always been and that our minds can\'t conceive an age to the universe. Because then what created the universe? What created that? And that? We\'ll just keep going back further and further, like a line and never reach the answer to the question.

Nevermind....I found him:
Quote
Two illegal aliens, Ralphel Resindez 23 and Enrico Garza 26, probably believed they would easily overpower a home alone 11 year old Patricia Harrington after her father had left their two story home.
It seems the two crooks never learned two things, they were in Montana and Patricia had been a clay shooting champion since she was nine. Patricia was in her upstairs room when the two men broke through the front door of the house. She quickly ran to her father\'s room and grabbed his 12 gauge Mossberg 500 shotgun.
Resindez was the first to get up to the second floor only to be the first to catch a near point blank blast of buck shot from the 11 year olds knee crouch aim. He suffered fatal wounds to his abdomen and genitals. When Garza ran to the foot of the stairs, he took a blast to the left shoulder and staggered out into the street where he bled to death before medical help could arrive.
It was found out later that Resindez was armed with a stolen 45 caliber handgun he took from another home invasion robbery. The victim, 50 year old David Burien, was not so lucky as he died from stab wounds to the chest.

Its hard to say if there is life like ours outside of our solar system. There is without a doubt other life in the ginormous universe..i mean we did just find that super earth-like planet not too far away from us, let alone the rest of the universe.
As to whether life on these other planets evolved like ours is impossible to find out at this point.

I remember reading about that planet. Its like the size of our sun. I think they should aim the Hubble at it.
There has to be some type of intelligent life. Maybe not as advanced as us but theres gotta be a civilization. I don\'t think it is possible to really do interstellar flight so even if there is life like ours, I don\'t think we\'ll ever come into contact with them. Even if we did, how do we know they wouldnt\' wage war with us or something? How do we know that they wouldn\'t think that they should be the only intelligent life?

There must me advanced life on a planet other than ours, too many UFO sightings and such to think other wise. If we were to think that we were the most advanced oraganism in the universe when we can\'t even land on another planet is absurd.

basing your assumption on UFO sightings isnt a very sturdy arguement. but your probably right. I would almost assume that there is other life out there that is nothing like us in any shape way or form. Didnt scientiests theorize that there could be clouds with brain power or something? sounds ridiculous, since that\'s like the flying brains in futurama, but i swear i remember hearing something about that.

Like Titan was saying, I think it\'s likely that material beings like us will never be able to cross interstellar distances of more than 2-3 light years. Some people have theorized that UFOs and aliens we\'ve been seeing are visitors from HERE. They are already on Earth, they\'re just visiting from another dimension or another time. Maybe they are us from 10,000 years in the future, checking in on their primitive ancestors. Or maybe they pop in from an alternate universe/dimension, which would explain why they are able to defy the laws of physics. Perhaps they are also unable to leave this little pocket of the galaxy. Anyway, it\'s just a theory.

I don\'t believe UFOs are aliens or future humans. There have plans that have surfaced of saucer aircraft that have been built and tested for the military. Most UFO sitings are in isolated areas, like in similar areas the military tests aircraft. Even the first jet aircraft were reported as UFOs. Whenever humans see something odd, they immediately believe it to be something out of our realm.

alot of the ufo sightings have been proven to be false...and lets not forget that bogus alien autopsy that was on fox a few years back!...:D...some sightings might be legit, but the one\'s where people are talkin\' about bein abducted are obviously bulls**t...i do think within the vastness of the universe there are other lifeforms...but who knows, humans automatically think that these other beings will be superior to us, when actually those other beings quite possibly could be inferior to us....

Considering that the earth is 4.5 billion years old and the universe is only 17 ish billion years old and we\'ve only been able to venture outside of our own planet for the last 50 years and haven\'t even begun scratching the surface of human space travel over long distances, I highly doubt that a race of superior lifeforms have travelled possibly billions and billions of light years (or even have the technology, for that matter) to come and analyze human beings on any level. It all seems quite asinine to me. But there\'s always a possibility, I guess. But it\'s highly improbable.

it\'s not so much that all life is inferior or superior, but out of all the space out there, one planet could have life thats extremely superior.
but i have to agree with evi that any lifeform can travel through space at its whim is highly improbable

If there are lifeforms, it would not be physically possible to travel so far unless their technology has made some magical portal to jump from one section of the universe to another. Wormholes are still just a theory. Ironically enough, that theory was initially for a science fiction novel until scientists realized it\'s mathematically possible.

Wrong. MOST of them are debunked.
The others are either covered or left without an explanation
edit:
I also find it amusing that we are discussing the universe as if we have infinite intelligence or enough intelligence or knowledge to be able to know and explain or talk about other beings, space or possibilities of space travel.
We tend to overvalue our intelligence as beings. And we always did that since the beginning of human culture.
We always tend to believe we know enough to suggest whats possible and what is not. 100 years from now scientists could be laughing at us just as we are laughing at those who considered theirselves scientists in the medieval times and talked about whats possible and what is not as if they knew enough

The mere fact that we\'re having this discussion on top of being thousands of miles away from each other speaks wonders. We\'re talking on "magic" boxes. And yes...things that are amazing now will seem primitive in the future...if our species lasts that long and we don\'t destroy ourselves.

so we should block our thoughts uni? You have to think in order to expand..maybe those scientists wouldnt be laughing if the people before them didnt think up the wrong ideas in the first place. If someone didnt come up with the idea that the earth is flat, than the earth being round wouldnt be scientifically sound.
Noone (in their right mind at least) gives their thoughts with the idea that they are facts. Just that it makes sense to them.

tru..no doubt...there really are alot of times when i\'m watching tv and almost always when i see some type of new innovative tech, i\'m always amazed at the breakthroughs we\'re accomplishing....i was watching some sci-fi movie where a security door was coded to a persons retina,...and they actually have that tech now...in japan they workin\' on cars parking themselves in certain lexus models....i\'ve also seen that in the u.s. they want to have computer operated taxis....i\'ve seen some demo\'s of them, and while it\'s not perfect, it was still amazing to see....years ago i used to think that we wouldn\'t see a space station on the level of the one that is in orbit now, but we do....we have satellites millions of miles in space transferring digitized pictures of planets back to earth...
i could go on and on,...humans may be mucking up the earth with alot of bulls**t, but there are some of us that are doin some big things to make our lives easier and also creating innovative medicines to help humans live longer....me?..i\'m not contributing to anything... i\'m just enjoyin\' the ride, sittin\' on the sofa with my hand in my pants..*Al Bundy style*...:fro:

Doesnt "speak" enough "wonders" to justify us as being intelligent enough to rule out possibilities. Unless we knew the limits of intelligence and knowledge and that we are near to these limits. Besides they are only considered wonderous according to our standards. For now we can only fool ourselves that we know these limits.

No ofcourse not. On the contrary I am suggesting the complete opposite. Because we are actually limiting our selves and thoughts with what we consider available knowledge.
The scientist who lacks the virtue of an open mind and does not question current knowledge or dpes not consider other possibilities he will not expand. If he gets stuck on available knowledge he will remain static.
Forming a thought that is shaped in accordance to "size" and "shape" of a certain knowledge "mold" will only think as far as that. Everything that does not fit will be ruled out without second questioning. Because knowledge can create bias
Thats why Galileo was considered a madman, a heretic, an illogical person and was criticized for something that was actually true. There were dozen of easilly observable sights and available knowledge that suggested the wrong belief that earth was flat. Who was Galileo, a one person to suggest otherwise?
The biggest scientist Steven Hawking (and Galileo) are the ones who try to look beyond what was already taught to them and the considered limits of the time. Passing knowledge only passes knowledge and that knwoledge has its limits as well.
Instead we speak as if we already know enough. Well has anyone considered that we may imagine that we know enough in this thread?
We lack self awareness
