Title: Interesting Wii article in Fortune, 6/11/07 issue
Post by: Coredweller on June 05, 2007, 03:01:13 PM
Before reading this article, I didn\'t quite understand that Nintendo\'s success with the Wii was coming through sales to people who aren\'t traditional purchasers of video game consoles.  I\'d like to look at some survey data to see how many Wii customers have NEVER purchased a console of any kind before.

There\'s also a good description of Nintendo\'s application of the "blue ocean" theory of product development.  I think I might read that book now.

Wii will rock you

Fortune\'s Jeffrey M. O\'Brien explains how Nintendo\'s new game machine won over the world - and beat the pants off Sony and Microsoft.

Well they are doing brilliantly but i find it completely stupid that they describe Wii\'s success as the better console. Wii doesnt offer anything better of what MS and Sony offer and there is almost nothing comparable between Wii and the other two except from the fact that they play games.

Wii is an awesome result of a diversified product and great marketing. It doesnt do anything better. It offers something the others dont at a cheap price. Thats what makes Wii a huge success

Honestly I cant imagine myself with just a Wii.

If I could rate each product how well designed it is and its offerings (including all functions) I d rate the PS3 first the 360 second and the Wii last.

But for cheapness in price and unique experience I d rate Wii first

Today I went with a friend to store so he would get a PS3 and me and the employee at the store made a run through all the functions of the console to inform him. That included the firmware 1.8 update. All these at a 1080p 42\'\' through HDMI
Things that we checked were:
Games: VF5 and COD3. VF5 simply looked jaw dropping  at 1080p.
Folding
BR movies (for the first time as well as my friend we saw a BR movie running in real HD glory. I was unexpectedly amazed by the visual quality)
Linux Ubuntu on PS3
DVD, PS2 and PS1 scaling
Networking with other devices
Playstation Store
HDD change
 plus more

We were going to check Resistence and Motorstorm too but there are continuously sold out and out of stock.

We left the store with his brand new PS3 and my friend told me that he had no idea of all the things PS3 could do and how great its games were. And although it originally seemed expensive to him, now he feels that he got too much for too little money. If he knew PS3 in detail from before he would have bought it before.

I ve met many people who have no idea of the PS3\'s games what it does as a full product. They dont know about the firmware, they dont know about playstation store, they dont know of online play. They only see a black box costing $600 that plays games.

But thats Sony\'s fault because they failed miserably to inform the consumer. Even the manual lacks the appropriate information.

I\'m surprised that hype is still pushing these things. Wii Sports is the killer app this gen.

Beyond that, everything is really hit or miss.

It\'ll be interesting to see if software sales will continue long term to match the crazy console sales.

Everywhere except Japan, where it is the number one selling title for the system anyway.

Nintendo is positioning themselves extremely well.

They made it look effortless, too.

I\'m with Gman on the whole "Wii\'s a gimmick" notion.  I played it at a friend\'s for 10 minutes before I got really bored.  I didn\'t even want to to check out the other games.

There is nothing on it though yet that seems "revolutionary" or AAA.
It has simple and fun games. The kind of games that people wouldnt want to play on a 360 or a PS3 but would have no problem playing them on a cheap console

well i always thought the wii and it\'s wand controller would be a gimmick...we\'ll see how long that novelty stays hot.....but one thing nintendo apparently has a lock on and is killin\' the industry in is the handheld market...

In South Africa we do not have much of a choice.  The PS3 costs us $964.  Therefore it\'s 360 here.  The Wii has not even officially launched (imported mine).

Here (for those who might think I am talking crap): http://www.ps3fanboy.com/2007/05/22/ps3-gets-a-price-boost-in-south-africa/

I\'d say in this generation 2 consoles would be the way to go - So either 360 and Wii or PS3 and Wii.

Nintendo was very clever in this respect.  They know they are the 2nd console of choice... but is that a bad thing?  I think not.  It means they sell double, which seems to be happening as we speak.
