i hope not....but look at the size of this whole,...if i remember correctly, it was these same thermal tiles that broke apart and caused the last shuttle to disintergrate in the atmosphere....hopefully they\'ll fix this problem....
http://www.cnn.com/linkto/beta.shuttle.html
"Engineers did not think the intense heat generated by re-entry could burn through the graphite structure underneath the blanket and jeopardize the spacecraft or the lives of astronauts. But they worried it might cause some damage that would require repairs on the ground"
^^^all that heat and friction upon entering the atmosphere and they think that heat wouldn\'t seep up into that hole?...i know they probably know waay more than i do up there, but i wouldn\'t take a chance on something like that...
-
Chewing gum will fix that hole, clips.
-
if they burn up on re-entry, prepare to hear a bunch of different reasons from NASA because theyll be in deep shit.
Cant believe theyd risk anything since theyre walking such a fine line. I want the soviet union back so we put more money into NASA,lol
-
They aren\'t repairing the tiles though. It said they were only fixing the thermal blanket. I know little about the workigns of the shuttle but I know that the tiles are only under the space craft and that the upper section is covered by something else. The bottom is what gets really hot and the top doesn\'t get as hot.

Our space program needs a good kick in the ass. How long has the shuttle been around for anyway? 20+ years? Time to build something new and go farther into space. Most of the stuff we take for granted today was originally designed for the space program back in the 60\'s and 70\'s.

We should be hunting for bigfoot, loch ness and champ.

Try 30+ years.
And by the way, Giga... did you just argue for more big government? WTF? I thought we needed to eliminate wasteful programs like NASA to support tax cuts and "boost the economy." At the very least we should privatize NASA and let corporations do it better! (even though it would cost 3x as much)
:p
Just kidding. I AGREE! We as a species need to aspire to things greater than merely our survival. We need to learn and explore to fulfill our potential. Besides, space travel is cool and it could unite people on this planet.
-
Giga, I agree. They are trying to ride the shuttle because it can go on X amount of launches. They just want to get those launches and try and extend the amount more and more. They have so many plans for much better craft. They need to fucking build them. We need China or Europe to vamp up their space programs so we have some competition. Once the USSR dissolved, the lack of competition really showed in their attitude.

uh...this is why we\'re not concentrating on making better space shuttles...

"TERRORISTS TERRORISTS TERRORISTS"....
it\'s tru tho,... sheeit it\'ll be 2008 soon, i thought by now that we\'ll at least have some type of colony on the moon or mars by now...and that space station that\'s up there now?...it\'s a start, but i was thinking a space station on a grander scale...something where space ships can dock and leave and where people can dine and do whatever.... something like a huge cruiseship...

Well with a better space vehicle Cheney could get his Hurricane Making Machines into orbit for a lot cheaper. The shuttle just went up so some major coastline city should expect a hurricane this season.
I also don\'t consider spending money on NASA a waste as long as they make progress, but it seems like it has been stuck in neutral for a very long time.

Heh, that vid is hilarious. Nothing funnier than seeing politicians focus on the key issues :)

They need to fucking build them.
with the money that\'s in their rectum?

They could sell their rectum for money so yes...yes, from their rectum.
