Square Enix Chief executive Yoichi Wada believes the Microsoft Xbox 360 and Sony PlayStation 3 are too complex, while the Nintendo Wii is the ideal game platform for Square Enix games.
The hardware power of the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 are "over-engineered" and "there are too many specs -- and you also need a high-definition TV, a broadband connection, and a deep knowledge of gaming--these consoles are mismatched to today\'s environment. In a year or two years, they will fare better," Wada added.

IMO: pussy. Good developers have created software that came out winner over others product in the gaming (and software) industry last decade are developer that have dreamed, slept and feed of technology.
Square are aiming for easy money instead of trying to create something innovative.
-
Developers depend on ease, they want a platform that they can pump shit out of with little effect.
meet, the wii.
-
Lol, exactly what is going to change in 1 to 2 years? Get working already, this isn\'t the 80\'ies anymore.
-
quantity > quality
-
I hope that Square-Enix brings some RPGs to the Wii. And X360.
I\'m sick of the PS2/PS3 being the "RPG" platform.
-
Makes sense. Takes assloads of times and resources to develop these games on 360 and PS3 and in the PS3\'s case not enough people own the system to buy the games. Wii is cheap, the most popular console, therefore, the best and most profitable to develop for.
Go Nin.

100% agree but, in the end, the consumer is loosing. As MM said, Quantity > Quality. This is just like EA that wouldn\'t support "widescreen" in their games.. too lazy and too cheap to spend time and money on their products.
There will be so many people that own a X360 and PS3 in 2 years that square will bite their toes when they realisze they lack the experience to reach this market.
-
Here we go. Square coming back to Nintendo with actual games would go a long way for Nintendo\'s longer-term game plan.
-
Man games really aren\'t the way they use to be like back when I first joined this site.
Maybe I was young and naive but there was some artistry in games, and the market was not constantly flooded with shit. I\'ll always hold the original Playstation as the best generation for games.
Now its just become very apparent, even from the companies that I use to trust that its all about money. Can\'t trust the developers anymore.
Like Blizzard and its World of Warcraft Mastercard.
-
the playstation was flooded with shit also. You can\'t knock a developer for wanting to make money. The problem is that these developers know they can produce a pile of shit and people will still buy it up because its next gen. There is no reason for the developers to put quality into their work at this point in time. You can\'t get pissed at a corporation for wanting to make money, thats silly.

meh i agree to a point, but square has the resources to make a quality product on the ps3 and 360...to me it seems like they\'re bein lazy and i think they would actually be takin\' a few steps back by producing games on the wii...i think that philosophy would make more sense to a smaller firm,..not somebody like square...

I\'m not saying the Playstation didn\'t have shitty games. But it seemed like it ceartinly had less on it. Or maybe I was just younger and didn\'t notice.
No big deal to me. I don\'t own a console of any generation anymore. I only put cash into the PC now.

I think you feel that way because on the PS1 many new titles appeared, which were also helped by the fact that for the first time developers could express more with 3D (or better technology) for the first time.
Wipeout, GT, Tekken, Toshinden (the original), Tomb Raider, Crash Bandicoot, Soul Edge, F1, Ridge Racer, Suikoden, Xenogears, vagrant Story, Resident Evil etc all these game captured the hearts of gamers because they had some qualities.
Some of them were new, others unique, others much better than what was offered before etc
Playstation was full of new quality games that never existed before and games that were leaps beyond their old 2D incarnations. Playstation was a heaven of games.
But developers (mainly Publishers) reused again and again and again what these examples offered, for easy money, they made people tired of them and they wont care as long as there are people that buy them. Also because costs increase they dont want to bother with new titles.
Just check the type of these games and how many of them have number 4 and beyond on their titles today. We get sequels every year and reusage of the same old ideas, while sacrificing anything related to artistic quality and better execution.
We get countless of FPS, shooters based on WW2 and fighting "terrorists" on 360 and PS3, and shallow games on Wii. All highly scored, popular and successful.
The problem arent shitty games (all consoles had a ton of them. Even the consoles that hardcore gamers praise). Its the kind of games that are considered popular, the top of the banch and of quality.
Fortunately there are some developers who do offer new and original games but they are lost in the masses of the other shallow but "popular" games

Vagrant Story was the only game for PSX that really wowed me. And Symphony.

Square rules.

Aye thats probably true. All I know is that when I was a little kid Saturdays were always my favourite day of the week because I was allowed to rent 1 game or 1 movie. I remember picking up Resident Evil because I thought the cover looked cool, same thing with Final Fantasy 7. Never even heard of an RPG before, all I knew was that the picture of Cloud with the big sword on his back looking up at that big tower in Midgar was badass! Hell I was only 11 years old back then when I had my Playstation.
Little moments like that give me a soft spot for the Playstation. So I will always love it.

That\'s what happens to whatever game system you grew up with.
i.e. I was a NES/SNES/Genesis kid. Oh, we had the Apple IIe (a good gaming computer in the mid 80s) and several Ataris, but to me gaming really began with the 8-bit generation.
-
I have very fond memories of the sega genesis aswell. I miss my Sega Channel.
-
i grew up with the atari 2600/5200 and commodore 64/128 <----i loved that pc...alot of great games where on that system for it\'s time...i do remenber one game for the atari 2600 called decathlon....it was some sort of track and field game....but to make your player run you had to move the joystick to the left and right very fast with the palm of your hand....i use to hear a crack and pop from the joystick because of it bein under so much stress....i went thru alot of atari 2600 joysticks....:p....funny how that controller had so many functions with that one stick and button,....well i guess the games bein so simple back then had alot to do with it...but i too agree in that true gaming kinda began with the 8 bit generation...
-
First gaming system I played was the commodore 64 but I have better memories of the NES/SNES generations.
The problem with the new generation jumps is that there isn\'t quite as much innovation between them. The graphics have gotten to the point that yes, they look a shitload better but they don\'t necessarily provide us with any new interesting perspectives. The playstation was so memorable because 3D opened up so much in the realm of possibilities. My generation and the previous generation got to see gaming grow up before our eyes so we hold the infant stages dear to our hearts. Now its all grown up and a big giant business and it has lost some of the luster it once had, at least it has in my eyes.
Not saying it wasn\'t a business from the start, but there were certainly more chances taken back when there wasn\'t so much to lose for failing.
-
It might just be that "you grew up". Kids still goes crazy every time I seem them in front of the gaming shelves like I was 15 years ago.
I agree with you, the jump from PS1 to PS2 wasn\'t all that impressive. I cant really comment on PS2 vs. PS3, I don\'t have an HDTV yet. The graphical improvement does look way better this generation than the last one.
The graphic and sound amelioration are a must to make you feel "part of the world" you are playing in. But that immersion is quickly broken when you see repetitive character behaviors. IMO, the next big step in the gaming industry and game developer, will be the improvement of AI and world animation. Oblivion tried to do this well, and it succeed.. but It as to be better and bigger.
