Title: My first concert experience - Tool
Post by: Joker on June 28, 2007, 05:29:24 AM
Went to my first concert on sunday and thankfully it was one of my favourite bands Tool. They sound amazing live and Maynards voice doesn\'t let down.
The opening band got boo\'d pretty bad...but they deserved it. They just sounded terrible, they were trying to do feedback with the instruments and it was just really bad. I don\'t even remember thier name.
Eventually Tool hit the stage and the noise was deafening as they opened up with The Pot. They had a weird triangle / pyramid thing with eyes. An optical illusion that wherever you were standing the eyes would look at you. The music started and didn\'t stop, even when they were changing instruments or settings on the amps there was always someone playing something. In fact there was probably more solos than singing but the solos were fantastic so I can\'t complain.
You never ever saw Maynard either, he was a silhouette for the whole show standing on a higher platform in the background while the rest of the band was in the foreground. He came into the light at the end when they came back for an encore but he had a big cowboy hat on so you couldn\'t see his face.
Almost the entire set was songs from 10,000 Days and very few songs from older albums. No sober, or parabola but they did play schism which was awesome. They had lots of nice things to say about Canada, but I assume they say stuff like that at every show. Maynard did mention that his favourite places to play are Canada and Australia.
I didn\'t have the balls to jump in the pit so maybe next time. Overall my concert experience was a 10 out of 10. As soon as the lights went down and they started playing The Pot, before the song was over all you could smell was marijuana throughout the stadium, it really was like something out of the movies. Random people passing joints throughout the audience, people standing up waving their lighters in the air.
They didn\'t allow cameras or anything like that in so I couldn\'t get any pictures for you guys :( But I figured i\'d share my experience with you guys and to say to any Tool fan to definately check them out live. You will not be dissapointed.

Pity they didn\'t play more songs off of Lateralus. That\'s by far their best album.
I presume it\'s probably on par with my APC concert. That was amazing. And it\'s weird; as fantastic as the music is, Maynard\'s voice really does manage to steal the show.

Joker i have been to a few concerts where the opening band was really bad. But it turned out they did it on purpose, made the main concert off the charts.

Shut up sammy!
and nO-One the opening band was called Melt Bannana or something stupid like that. They were quite terrible tho.
and Bob your absolutly right. I had a massive amount of respect for Maynard as a vocalist before the concert. Seeing him do his thing live only made me respect him even more. As I said earlier I would of liked to actually see him instead of his shadow, but you don\'t go to a music concert for the visuals.

I know :( Mainly took me so long because all my favourite bands are either dead / from the 70\'s / or they have broken up. Or a combo of all 3. I had a chance to go to Ozzfest with some buddies a few years ago but I missed out. Even missed out on the massive SARSfest thing with AC/DC - the rolling stones - flaming lips and a bunch of other bands from a couple years back when they wanted to reboot tourism in Toronto.
But as soon as I saw that Tool was coming to town I jumped at the chance to pop my concert cherry :)

I was actually wrong, it was not Melt Banana. It was a band called Big Business. They sucked. They sucked hard. Sucked to the point that I spent the last 20 min looking for who the hell it was that opened the show. All I remembered was the high level of suck.

Glad to hear you liked TOOL live as much as i did. I saw them the year Ænima came out and it kicked so much ass. One of the best bands i\'ve ever heard live.
I went to lollapalooza in Kansas City back in \'97 When TOOL was the headliner. Overall there were only a few bands I was into that played, but after Korn was done and TOOL came out the place went apeshit. We had front row tickets, but everybody rushed the front so we got pinned on the fence for the first few songs.
I remember a hail of full water bottles being thrown on stage and one hit TOOL\'s guitarist in his playing hand and broke one of his strings. He just stopped playing in the middle of the first song flipped off the crowd, dropped his guitar and walked off stage.
Maynard was wearing black tights, a jock strap and very padded bra (I had wood). His head was shaved, but he wore a fake ponytail that when down to his ass and had on tons of makeup. He kept talking about getting a sexchange between shows. I wish I could find the pics I took... one thing I do remember is that Snoop Dogg Sucked Ass

I saw Tool about a year ago, was a good show though I would have traded it for APC.
Tomorrow I see Wolfmother for the 3rd time!

for me, i can listen to more APC songs than tool songs. But the awesome tool songs are miles ahead of the good APC songs..if that makes sense.
i cant get tired of 10,000 days (the song)

The album Lateralus is ahead of anything APC did. But Thirteenth Step and Mer De Noms are ahead of Tool\'s other albums, IMO.
I think they complement eachother well.

I can kinda say the same thing. I started listening to APC a long time ago. I never really researched the background of the band. When I heard that they had members associated with Tool, I had to give Tool a listen and I really loved them. Now I play both somewhat often. I listen to more APC though but like Tool better.

Going to see Tool tonight and yes, Big Business is opening for them.
I\'ve seen APC a few times and they are simple amazing live. Hated to see them break up.
:(
Still, sometimes you\'re in the mood for Tool and sometimes in the mood for APC.

Great fucking show.
Big Business rocks...Awesome drummer.
Tool was great...They played.........
Jambi Forty Six and 2 Schism Stinkfist Wings for Maria 1 & 2 10,000 Days Vicarious Laterlus The Pot
The Drummer for Big Business done like a five mintue drum-off bewteen Tool\'s Drummer..Maynard had a blast with it. He was never in the shadows, instead he was front and center with a mohawk and sunglasses.

Nice to hear you enjoyed the concert as much as I did Raz. I don\'t know what to tell ya about big business, maybe they figured out what went wrong after the show they played in my town. All I know is myself and 19,000 other people couldn\'t wait for them to get off the stage.

damnit, now I want to see Tool, they need to do another euro tour. Anyhoo, I\'m off to see Cannibal Corpse play tonight, and thankfully in a rather small club so it should be a blast.

well the show was ok, just a standard CC show where they use the same lines to introduce the songs. The mosh pit was kinda brutal, a friend chipped her tooth and a guy fell on a buddy of mine and his nose.... kinda tore from his upper lip, I made it through OK though, just sore.
here\'s a crappy phone pic I took (https://psx5central.com/community/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.hrellir.is%2Fstuff%2Fpics%2FCannibal.jpg&hash=8d58909283f72785568506c6c2f15fc6c03c59b1)
The christmas lights in the backdrop just made everything so cute
