Wait for me to erect my poll.
-
Not yet. Owned it for over a year.
-
the one I got out of the box was red ring of death :( But the one I got it back works just fine now!!! Although I\'m scared it is going to happen to me sooner or later!!!

Well...VOTE! God dangit!

No problems, and still going strong since March 2006.
Possibly I don\'t give my gear as much of a workout as others do. I definitely take precautions and make sure there\'s plenty of room for airflow around the case, and don\'t abuse the hardware at all.

Same here and it still died on me. The Xbox 360 hardware design is simply crap.

So true. I had the same problem with Sony quality control the last few generations, but it appears they stepped it up this time around. Guess someone had to drop the ball.
-
yup, happened to me once too. the things must have a terrible design flaw for it to happen so much. Heh, at least they\'ve given everybody a 3 year warranty, so they took mine back, no questions asked...
-
mine died but i didnt get the ring of death. The video just stopped playing. But i got a 360 manufactured on aug 15, 2007 in return, so it should have that heatsink that makes it survive. The ones that dont have it are doomed. It\'ll happen before the three year waranty is up so thats good i guess, lol.
I\'d still own a 360 before a ps3, knowing the technical problems. It was a pain in the ass to send it in, but that was mostly UPS\'s fault that it took longer than i would\'ve liked..but i got a free month of xbox live.
-
had one, messed up but not ring of death... just got worse and worse at reading discs... thye had it for less than a week
-
Mine\'s still good. I feel lucky. I think it\'s something outrageous like one in ten have been faulty due mainly to the heat. I try to allow extra air to mine if I\'m using it for more than just watching a movie or something.
-
Another bit the dust. :p
-
I sold my Xbox360 before it could break down on me. lol :thumb:
But eh... during the time i did have it ; the console crashed twice ... i guess due overheating ( even though placed in a well ventilated spot ) and the game disc skipped on 3 occassions.
So, nothing really serious
-
just sent my 2nd one back a few weeks ago
-
Mine is still goin\' strong, but then again I only play it when a killer APP comes out. I wore it out with Guitar Hero 2, plan on doing the same for Guitar Hero 3 and Mass Effect. Right now I am busy playing The Witcher.
-
Even though I\'ve never had the Red Ring, and the X360 has been my main console for over a year, uh... 6/11 votes going to "MY XBOX 360 HAS DIED ONCE" is alarmingly bad...
Damned Microsoft.
-

Jesus! I want to get a 360 but this may make me reconsider it.

Get the new models. These problems have been fixed, not to mention MS stepped up and added to the warranty.

For some people it is. Imagine my wife\'s cousin just enjoying the hell out of the brand new game he just bought, GEARS of War (I\'ll get you, viper!) , when in the middle of his bliss the dreaded Red Ring of Death kicks him on the side of his gaming head.
He was quite upset. No console for more than a month (turn around time). Repeat that 3 more times until he sold it for $50 and bought an Elite.
-
how was he playing god of war?
-

 Gears of war. I get them confuzzled all the time. :) Bitch. You knew what I meant. :p
-
mine has been replaced three times.

I ll probably get the Elite once I ll get a job. Too busy studying at the moment.
Elites are ok right?
omgzers its the end of the worldz
Bah it is not.
-
They called it Elite coz the rest of the 360\' suck goat balls. But that\'s actually a good thing in your country. ;)
-
Well mine hasn\'t died but once in awhile I get my system error or it won\'t turn on at all. I just keep turning it off and on until it comes on. My buddy has got the red circle of death. I don\'t care cause I\'m saving up for a PS3 which I could by next pay check. And if I do what game(s) should I purchase?

Ratchet and Clank, Heavenly Sword, Call of Duty 4, Folklore, Assassins Creed and Uncharted.

Yeah I agree Elite 360s are a good thing for my country.

Anyone running their 360 to their PC monitor via VGA? Just started doing that, so I can have one big gaming desk / center.
-
I did that before getting an HDTV. Worked out really well..but obviously 40">>19" lol
-
True. Right now I am doing it - but I plan on picking up a bigger one (24 inch).. Works out better for me, due to the fact the wife watches TV when I would normally want to play games.
-
does your computer that you bought have a 24" or are you thinking of buying one separately for the 360?
because I had a switch that let me have my pc and my 360 go through the same monitor. I just hit Insert twice and it\'d switch modes. My dad has a box full of random computer crap so i can\'t find a link of what the switch thing is
-
KVM switch, most likely.
Thinkin of buying a 24 just for the 360. I guess I could just buy a KVM switch tho\'.
-
just get a monitor that has both a dvi and a vga hookup, that\'s what I did anyway...
I also used to play on my monitor before I got my hdtv. It looks just as good as on an hdtv apart from the fact that it will get a tiny bit stretched vertically, due to the fact that most games are made to output 16:9 resolutions while monitors are 16:10.

I need to change my vote from "no problems" to "returned it once." I just got the flashing red lights, 2 years after I bought it. Probably the reason it took so long for the problem to occur for me is because I don\'t use the console very heavily.
Maybe they\'ll send me a newer version this time.
-
they likely wont.
-
Bunch of kids are swapping the innards of new 360s with their borked ones and returning it to Walmart. Of course...they paid cash. :)
-
Still no problems here.
-
they likely wont.
I did.
-
I did.
Hmm...they keep sending my sister-in-law a refurbished one. She\'s on her 5th. Yeah, it borked again. I think it was 3 last time I mentioned it. She got it from her cousin who originally owned it.
-
It might be on how screwed up yours is. Mine didnt even red ring, it just stopped showing picture, then eventually sound.
Think something inside fried that completely killed it
-
I have to change my vote. :(

Red Ring of Failure
Is your Xbox 360 still working? You must be one of the lucky ones.
By Mike Smith
ADVERTISEMENT
Over 18 million Xbox 360s have sold through since the console\'s launch in November 2005, but just how many of those are still working? Squaretrade, a company that specializes in providing warranty support to purchasers of electronic goods from various manufacturers, claims 16% of Xbox 360s experience a hardware failure within six to ten months after a warranty purchase. Three out of every five failures were for the infamous "Red Ring of Death" general hardware failure error, a problem often linked to overheating.
The Xbox\'s figures compare poorly to competing consoles, which have a failure rate of around 3% -- and if anything, the Squaretrade figure underestimates the scale of the Xbox 360\'s reliability issues. It\'s a good bet that some buyers of Squaretrade warranties went straight to Microsoft after experiencing hardware issues and don\'t factor into the 16% number. On its company blog, Squaretrade pointed out that failure rates are "certain to go up" as the machines in their study group grow older.
Microsoft is cagey about coughing up official failure rate figures, which has lead some commentators to speculate about the actual severity of the problem. Luke Plunkett, a blogger on respected games news site Kotaku, said in a recent post that if the real failure rate wasn\'t in the 30-40% range, he\'d "wolf down humble pie until his sides split."
Plunkett\'s sides are likely safe. Stories of 360 owners making their way through eight or nine consoles aren\'t hard to find, but to its credit, Microsoft has been working with the affected individual in at least one of those cases to lessen the impact of the constant failures.
16 Percent of Xbox 360s Are Likely to Break, Report Claims
Even so, there\'s a surprise lurking for consumers who return their 360s for repair. When you purchase content -- arcade games, extra tracks, etc. -- over Xbox Live, it\'s playable by any user on the console you used to make the transaction. If you go to a different console and sign in with your gamertag, you can download the content and play it only for as long as you\'re signed in. Once you move back to your main machine, it will no longer be playable. Sounds like a handy system to let you take the content you own from place to place, right?
But the trick with this system is that once a broken machine returns from its little vacation, it generally has sufficient internal changes to make it look, to Xbox Live, like a different console. So all your downloaded content -- which, if you\'re a heavy user, could amount to hundreds of dollars worth of purchases -- are only accessible to one gamertag, and only when the console has a live internet connection.
Getting this situation resolved can be difficult. Affected users have reported having to make repeated calls to the Xbox support line, often to no avail. Some fortunate individuals were able to eventually convince the MS reps to refund all the points they\'d spent so they could repurchase all the affected content, although they had to do it using a different gamertag.
How to Avoid Hardware Problems
* Air it out. Many failures are attributed to the inadequate cooling system of early-model 360s, so anything you can do to give it an easier time will pay off. Make sure you put the console in a place with cool, steady airflow.
* Move it and lose it. Don\'t change the orientation of the console when it\'s running. The DVD drive\'s running gear isn\'t as well secured as it could be, so knocking over a vertically-standing console can cause the machinery to collide with the disc surface. Characteristic circular scratches are the result and are generally fatal for the game.
* Think new. Thanks to a well-publicized cooling system redesign, newer machines are less likely to suffer problems. Any console bought in the last six months or so should have much better chances of surviving.
Red Ring of Death: What to do
Is it a "real" red ring of death? Somewhat confusingly, the true red ring error only has three of the four quarters of the ring illuminated. If all four are lit up, you have a much simpler problem: your A/V cable is loose!
Enterprising 360 owners have discovered a homebrewed way to fix the problem, although it only works for a short period of time. It involves turning on your console, wrapping it tightly in a towel, and leaving it on for 20-25 minutes. This might void your warranty from Microsoft, so consider yourself warned.
If all else fails, hit up the Xbox web site to request a warranty repair. They\'ll send you a cardboard "coffin" for you to return your console and send back a fixed machine in a few weeks. The official warranty was extended to three years for this specific problem, so even launch-day 360s are technically still covered.
-
anyone know if the warranty starts over when you get the other/refurbished console?
3 years is going to go relatively quickly from the time i bought it, but if its now 3 years from when i got the new one from MS, id be a little more comforted

Starts over with each console, if I recall correctly.
-
from the manufacture date of the console iirc

I got my Xbox 360 back from Microsoft yesterday. I forgot to check the serial number to see if I got the same unit back, or a different one. I will check tonight.
They were pretty fast; it only took about 9 business days for me to receive it, including all shipping time. UPS shipping was free, by the way.
When the UPS guy gave me the box, he said "Gettin your Xbox back?" (It was shipped in a featureless white box) I said "Yeah, you\'ve seen these before?" He replied, "Yeah, I\'ve seen a lot of em. That\'s why I decided not to buy one." :)
-
Wise man. ;)
Speaking of UPS, my co-worker told me a story about his highschool buddy who used to work at UPS. When the 360 was still new, they began to recognize boxes that contained the console. They would chuck 1 out of 5 Xbox360 into a canvas cart, some guy would wheel it over to the brick fence at their parking lot and start chucking the boxes over. On the other side was couple of guys with vans.
They ebay\'d some of the 360\'s the next day. Those that were in the know kept a couple of 360s for themselves. This was routine. Wii\'s and PS3s were actually the harder to ID.
Ironically, that friend of my co-worker got busted for flunking his drug test.
-
you need a drug test to work at ups?

I think so. If you\'re working with those forklifts, I think. I\'m just relaying you what my co-worker (seated across from me) told me.

Tell him Joker from psx2central.com says he\'s a liar!!
That\'ll show him.

I just googled it. UPS does do drug tests.

Well since I last posted I got the Red rings of death and now I just had to send it back again for Unplayable disc, which those disks are taken better care of than I am. Oh well I can\'t beat getting the piece fixed for free. Unfortunately this is the 2nd time...who\'s not to say there won\'t be a 3rd or 4th? I don\'t but I really just wanna play NHL \'08 since that\'s the only game I really was playing on it anyways.
-
xbox 360\'s are the s**t!!!...and i mean that...literally....;)
-
Well my friend\'s 360 got the 3 red rings of death too a few days ago too. He cant believe it died so fast. His older consoles still work to this day and his 360 is just one years old.

You have discovered the truth. Amazing! So thats why you desperately want to make fun of me. Because unlike me, you have other friends to spend your time with and get all the fun you need. :(
Please teach me how to make friends so I can pick on others and feel special like you.

on 360 #4 currently.
-
Still on number 1 but I\'ve only had it for a few months and it doesn\'t get a whole lot of attention.
-
I\'m on the 4th 360. I bought it when gears of war came out, I remember because it was my first game.
The main reason I didn\'t buy a ps3 is because it pissed me off how they were so hard to find. I mean the release was anticipated for years how can you not at least fulfill the reservations..
And I guess I\'m very stubborn.
-
On my 27th right now.

What are you smoking? Within two weeks anyone could walk in and buy a PS3. You must be talking about the Wii, which is just now becoming common in stores.
-
Is it okay if I vote in my cousins place? ;) He has had two RROD, maybe thrice if he had bothered to send it in the last time it RROD:ed. Now he only uses the PS3.
-
I was over my brothers house and I wen\'t to go play 360 with my nephew and we found out he had the "Red Ring of Death". Shit was pretty sad.
-

PS3 was hard to find around my place for the 1st few weeks. People would just buy them and sell on e-bay for quick cash. even in it\'s 3rd - 4th week, ppl could still sell them for around 1k on ebay.
-
Mine original Xbox 360 is still chugging. And it was a launch console, so I\'m lucky I guess.
