Am I supposed to buy the 40 gig PS3? Seems like that\'s the main one that is getting promoted now.
-
It\'s not backward compatible. The 80gb version is a PS2 emulator and doesn\'t work with all PS2 games. 60GB is teh way to go.
-
The 60gb is still bein\' sold?
-
If there\'s any left.
-
not anywhere around here - stopped seeing it on shelves about 3 weeks ago
-
I noticed that this morning, I\'m looking into getting a PS3 in a few weeks, couldn\'t find a 60GB model anywhere
-
Just get the 40gig.
-
yup, i\'d go 40gig also.
If I am right, when you "upscale" PS game in the PS3, it use software emulation. So the "EE" in the 60gb is useless if you wanna use this feature.
I\'d stick with the PS2 for PS1 and Ps2 games and buy a PS3 for the rest :)
-
That\'s kind of what I was thinking too. Not like I\'d sell the PS2 anyway.

Just fyi:

Go to this link on SonyStyle and apply for a Sony Visa:
http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/...52921644487282
When approved, write down account number, expire date, and 3 digit code. Register for a SonyStyle store account. Then *call* in the order...don\'t order online. Ask for a 40GB or 80GB PS3 and tell them you have the new Visa. You will get:
* $100 credited to the new VISA
* an additonal 5% off credited to the new Visa for calling in the order
* 0% interest for 12 months
* a free second controller
* 5 free Sony Blu-rays using mail-in form
* free ground shipping
That\'s $120 off, $150 free stuff, and 0% interest. I got a 40GB PS3 with all this for $309 out-the-door (that includes sales tax!!). Man, what a deal.
I think this may only be good until midnight Friday 11/30. The PS3s are currently backordered but will be shipping early next week.

Bro has the 40gb. It has a dual band Bluetooth antenna which I would rather have instead of the single band in my 60gb. Never used the backward compatiblity and never plan to either.

what is the hard drive used for?
do you use it to "install" games on like you do with a pc, or is it just used to store game data and other shit?

It installs data for quick loading stages: Ratchet and Clank; Uncharted use the PS3 HD and has practically no load times other than starting the game (duh).
You can partition the drive so you can run Linux or even Windows XP (slow as hell, I heard). Linux runs a little better but not that fast as PCs. I spaced out 10gb for future use.
-
uhh..huh?
it\'s used to store all ur saved games, but most of the space (on 360 at least) is used on demos and arcade games. I\'d imagine all the things you get on that PSN home thing (where you have ur own "crib") will use a decent amount of space.
40 gig will be good, especially since u still have ur ps2

image, audio and video files for your favorite pics/photos, music and movies
Game updates: some titles recieve updates that add some extra content or balance things up. Motorstorm and Resistance for example both got automatic updates to improve the online experience. Eye of Judgement gets updates for the newer cards and improvement of the gameplay system.
Game saves: well thats pretty self-explained
Downloadable content: Playstation Network is filled with lots of content to download. There are PS1 games added as well as many PS3 games. Warhawk exists in downloadable and Blu Ray form. Wipeout HD will also be available. There are other games too such as Super Puzzle Fighter2 and other games. You can get demos from many games. Additionally you can find trailers from games and movies and wallpapers. There are extra content for your games to buy as well. Like extra songs for GH, extra cars, modes and tracks for Motorstorm etc
And there is "Home" too.
Unreal Tournament 3 on the PS3 is supposed to be compatible with user created content such as mods. HDD is needed for that kind of thing

ah, right
thanks
so is 40GB more than enough, or would I likely run out of space fast?
-
40 gig is enough.
-
can you play online right out of the box, or do you have to sign up to something, and/or run it through your pc modem?
-
you need to connect it to some source of the internet..whether it be the router or some A-B switch that has it directly hooked with ur PC\'s source of internet (if you dont have a router)
and the ethernet plug is already in the console, so all you need is the cable
and sony\'s online is free
-
you can replace the HD drive with any portable drive, it\'s easy and they show you how in the PS3 booklet.

Can you tell me how exactly do you achieve that? :)
