But the new LCD 1080p 120hz is the best of both worlds for both 24fps and 60hz. :D No more 3:2 pull down. No more jittery panning probles (not everyone notices this but I do :( ). It\'s perfect for both broadcast and player modes! Of course, it\'s going to be awesome for gaming.
I can finally play Heavenly Sword, Ractchet and Clank, Assassins Creed and Uncharted at 720p or watch blu-ray movies at 24fps and see hi-def football at 60. :D
But...I gotta wait until January. :D

I recently bought an LG 32" for the bedroom, but moved it to the living room and gave away my WEga 27" when hockey started.. Buffalo homegames are in HD... but it is clear that I need a larger TV...
-
Superbowl sales start in January. No interest rates for 2 year dealies.

i may be getting a new tv for my living room. I saw that 120hz commercial the other day and was like damn. That rocks.

I\'ve been running a Toshiba 65H80 Rear Projection monster for a number of years, but I may need to upgrade in 2008. It only does 1080i and it\'s hard to keep the convergence and geometry calibrated.
I\'m just not sure I can step down from 65" in the living room. Maybe I can rearrange the room and put it closer to the seating... In any case I will wait for the bitchin\' LCD futuretech.

Testing different demos side by side on 60hz lcds and 120hz lcds it really wasn\'t much of a jump at all. Not to mention the fact that I hate smoothing features the different tv companies are adding to a lot of the lcds that have 120hz. It looks like ASS. Also, in that same testing of 60 and 120hz lcds, we tested a plasma and it stood out by a decent amount with motion shots.
Don\'t get me wrong I\'d take an lcd but I\'d definitely choose plasma in front of it.

I don\'t want the reflection. The demos you saw make movies look like ass coz they remove all the movie grain and it ends up looking like a camcorder movie. You can tone down the processing so it looks better. You can tone it back up when you\'re watching footballs games or documentaries like "Planet Earth".
Broadcast hi-def runs at 60fps. Movies run at 24fps. The 120hz handles these differences perfectly. If you get an LCD or Plasma at 60, great. But it will have to use the 3:2 pull down when you start playing movies. To me, i notice the jittery motion when the scene pans. Not everyone see this.
-
Well we tested a bunch of different demos plus watched regular movie stuff on the 120hz lcds. I\'m a rep for Panasonic plasmas (haha). Can\'t fault you with not wanting the reflection. We have a couple anti-glare models which do well but seem to tone down the other advantages of the plasmas.
As for the processing on the smoothing feature, I would definitely turn it down. How the tvs come out of the box I can\'t handle. I read a reviewer on CNet that liked it cranked all the way up......stupid.

What\'s wrong with it? LOL:gives:

my 2004 DLP did 48Hz. It was a projector though so odd RR\'s like 48 & 72 are much more common.
Glad to see technology advancing for you flat panel homos

I absolutely hate that,...that camcorder look makes the movie look really cheap....i remember watching some low-budget horror joint that had that boarderline camcorder look and the gore and the overall look of the movie was extremely poor.

120 Hz LCDs look crap from what i know. it can look smooth and crisp on slow motion video, but when there are fast motion going on, it can make it look blurry and soft. 60 Hz LCDs is cheaper but handle motion more naturally. but plasmas still beat LCD in the motion area.
If you guys are planning on buying LCD, get the 60 Hz.

60hz ends up having the 3:2 pulldown problem when it comes to movie players. 120hz pretty much does away with that. The 120hz that you thought was crap....again, it was the way it was adjusted in the showroom. 60hz is what is broadcasted over cable, the 120 hz handles that perfectly. 24fps is from the movie players. 120hz plays that perfectly. But the 60hz? 3:2 pulldown crappness.
This will explain better about the 3:2 problem.

Why go 60hz when 120hz was designed to do away with teh problems associated with 60hz?
-
you have to remember LCD pixel response time in reality is still slow.
if an lcd have a pixel response time of 16 ms for all colors, then that would be about 62.5 frames per second....that is just wishful thinking because i doubt any lcd can reach that speed for all color.
why bother with 120 Hz when lcd pixel response couldn\'t handle it in reality?
plasma on the other hand have a pixel response similiar of crt which is around 1 to 2 ms.... or 500 to 1,000 frames per second.
so, if plasma plan on supportting 120 Hz in the future, you can count that it will be the magic number for 24 fps, 30 fps, and 60 fps. thanks to fast pixel response time. you don\'t have to worry about motion blur and the sort.
because 24 x 5 = 120
and 30 x 4 = 120
and 60 x 2 = 120...
these 3 frames rate are all divisible of 120.
-
If someone is really nitpicky about picture quality, perhaps an LCD screen isn\'t for them.
-
I have considered the response time of plasma vs LCD.
The advantage goes to plasma but the time differences have come closer. Also, the area where I will be watching this is well lit and have a lot of windows. I can\'t have the reflection from plasmas. LCDs uses a third less power than plasmas as it uses florescent back lighting.

Just curious but why not an SXRD?

i am not planning on upgrading to any tv yet. i am just responding my input to the topic starter. i am happy with my current 34" HDTV CRT. Love it contrast ratio, black level, viewing angle, and very fast pixel response time.

Bah! Enjoy your refridgerator size tube TV! You terrorist! :D BTW, quit being gay and please buy Blu-ray movies and help kill off the HD DVD format. I\'m looking at you, RAZ.
Thank you.

I buy neither. I simply Netflix my HD DVDs. I will never, ever support a Sony format. It just won\'t happen. Betamax, UMD and other various Sony formats are still fresh in my mind.

Sony gets royalties from VHS, CDs and DVDs.
Yeah, Sony had a huge role in the VHS technology.

No shit, Sherlock, but you know what I meant.
Then again, I don\'t buy CD\'s , I only bought used VHS tapes and as for DVD\'s, once again, the only thing I buy of those is superhero flicks and tv sets. Anything else is Netflixed.
Still, I\'ll never support a TRUE Sony format. Just like I\'ll never own another Sony TV, after my first one died within three months. It\'s just one of those things. Everyone has their quirks.
-
Sony isn\'t the primary developer of Blu-ray! They have had a helping hand but it\'s a consortium of other corporations that created blu-ray.
Matsushita, Pioneer, Philips, Thomson, LG Electronics, Hitachi, Sharp, Samsung and Sony are the founders.
-
I\'ll put it this way.
I would of never bought into HD DVD, had it not been for the fact that an HD DVD player is extremely cheap. And even then, I own maybe four of them and will never buy another. In my opinion, this whole high def war is stupid and I don\'t think either format is worth the price of a new set / player / expensive discs. That\'s my opinion tho\'. I figure HD DVD will lose out, but it doesn\'t bother me. I haven\'t invested much in it and I won\'t invest any in Blu Ray, not unless I can get a player for around $100 bucks and then, maybe I would, just so I could Netflix Blu Ray discs also.
But, you\'re talking to someone who refuses to pay extra for Dish HD channels. The content is the same, the show is the same, the better video really doesn\'t change the dynamic for me. Then again, I own "bootleg" copies of cartoons from the 60\'s, recorded from a TV with rabbit airs, taped to VHS, then recorded to DVD. Sure, the quality is shit, but I still enjoy \'em.

Sony KDLXBR46 = owned! :D
Hooked up the PS3 to it and after letting it auto scan for channels, me and the wife sat down and watched 3:10 to Yuma (BR).
Yuma, I loved the story. I never saw the original in its entirety as a kid but I knew I liked what I saw back then. But this had a great story and the picture quality was outstanding.
I fiddled around with TV\'s picture settings and caused some of the faster paced action (in Yuma, not broadcast) to have slight image trail. Need to read the manual or search for the best setting for this TV for both BR and broadcast.
We have no surround sound but the built in speakers are decent.
-
Most likely it has different settings for each input channel, so you can optimize each setting.

Kind of neat to have only one A/V cable coming from your source huh?

So glad I waited. DLPs suck. Plasmas suck. LCD 1080p 24/60hz kinda suck.

This is total Bollocks. First off do not say plasma sucks when in fact they still to this day outclass any LCD in terms of Picture quality, Price and features. Pioneer has had 72HZ refresh rate for true 24p for a while now. LCD still suffers from pixel response time, while this is not even an issue with plasma.
Just curious as to what LCD did you buy, cause SONY(bravia XBR line) is the only company who makes a decent LCD TV and if the unit you bought isn\'t a SONY then really i think you have been misguided.

I\'m going by my parents old plasma TV. It is true that plasmas have better blacks....but this TV is in a well lit area so plasmas suck for this type of room.
-
It depends on the plasma make and model. Cheap generic plasma\'s suck.
As for room light I have my plasma in a well lit room and it\'s not an issue so as long as the light source is not directly focused on the display unit, if the light is diffused it\'s all good.

It wouldn\'t work in my family room. The kitchen has a direct line of sight to the TV and the kitchen has a huge bay window. Won\'t work and keeping the kitchen dark during the day, it\'s not possible unless I get black drapes. No thanks.
