Let\'s get 2008 started right. :)
Who would you most like to see nominated for President of the United States?
Also, let us know WHY you support him/her.
-
Obama.
I hate the rest.
Plus he\'s black. That\'s history.
I\'d settle for HIllary.
She\'s a woman.
That\'s history.
Plus I hate the rest.
-
i seriously have no idea..obama\'s alright but seems like he could be convinced to change his arguements pretty easily..hillary seemed like the strongest in the one debate i saw, but debates are bullshit so who knows.
the republicans all seem pretty useless..i heard ron paul is good but he has a bunch of views that go against what republicans think, so he wont get past the primary. But im praying to GOD gulliani doesn\'t get far
-
i honestly have no idea either. politics is my weakest subject.
-
Gulliani!
Obama just doesn\'t have it imo. Too divisive due to the ethnicity factor. When blacks won\'t vote for a black candidate just because of his color (cough - Oprah) then I will consider voting for one. He really doesn\'t have any innovative ideas - not that the others do either, but it seems most people are voting for him due to the fact that he is black and it is the cool progressive thing to do.
Hillary hates men. It will be a sad day for every male in this country if she gets elected. Besides, the last thing we need is another "heir" in the white house.
What we need is a moderate president - not an far left or far right candidate. IMO all of the Dems and the Repubs pander toward their base. The only candidate who bucks that trend to some extent is Guilliani because he has more socially liberal views than the Christian conservatives.
I actually wouldn\'t be opposed to voting for a Democrat IF they would distance themselves from the Code Pink/Move On folks.
BTW who the hell voted for Huckabee?
-
Gulliani!
Cleared the mafias out of NYC (much the disappointment of clips) and cleaned out Broadway of scum. As President, he\'ll clean out the dirt bags of this world and hopefully, Kaliforussia will sink into the ocean.
-
Actually, I think you mean he cleaned up Times Square and got rid of all the drug dealers (much to the disappointment of clips).
-
 @ gman and giga...my choice and the only logical one....Obama...and it\'s not because he\'s black(okay well that\'s part of the reason) i actually feels he\'s tired of the political crap that goes down in washington and he\'s one of the few people that has voted against the war from the jump. His inexperience as some would like to point out has nothing to do with how well he can manage the country.... look at the asshole currently running the country *with experience* is fairing now, the country is a mess domestically and abroad.
And giga the point of black folk votin\' for obama simply because he\'s black is as wrong as two fat people tryin\' to have sex. I\'m sure there are black folk votin\' for him because he\'s black, but you will always have that, and that mentality goes waaay back to the slavery/civil rights era and thinking "wouldn\'t it be nice to have the first black prez?" and that black vote with obama isn\'t set in stone,..there are still thousands of african americans votin for hillary all because of the Bill Clinton effect. I think hillary is bland and will become nothing more than a robotic slave to the masses in power if she becomes prez...and i really doubt oprah is endorsing obama strickly because of his color, what i think is wrong is that some white folk won\'t vote for obama strickly because of the color of his skin, and that is a problem that will probably hinder any legit african american from attaining office in the "white house".

Contradict yourself much?
Also he is just as much a player in Washington as any of the other candidates. He is in the Senate - the most corrupt branch of the entire government.

that will never happen. There will always be a portion that votes for him because he\'s black, and only because he\'s black. that\'s because there is always a portion of the population doing that, mainly because they dont know anything about politics. So to say you\'re not going to vote for a black candidate just for that reason is just as closed-minded as voting for him because he is black. If he has good politics, than it shouldnt matter what other people are going to vote and why.
and guilliani runs the 9/11 train way too damn much. When Ron Paul had a very convincing arguement that we kept poking at the middle east till 9/11 happened, gulliani acted like the biggest douchebag i\'ve ever seen
-
No Kucinich?
Bah, at least put in an other option.
-

That\'s because Guillani is a douchebag. He\'s just a douchebag that lucked up and can ride the 9/11 bandwagon.
-
No Kucinich?
Bah, at least put in an other option.
Polls posted on this forum software have a maximum of 10 choices. I took the top five from each party based on recent polling data.

with bush you\'d think people could see a difference between doing well during 9/11 and running the country. at least i think bush handled 9/11 well..but i guess he would since he wants to bomb/intimidate everyone and i just wanted revenge, lol.
-

Fair enough, 98% of the population couldn\'t even name any of the presidential candidates outside of hillary, obama, and guillani anyway.
-
No Kucinich?
Bah, at least put in an other option.
I think Core made good picks for only having 10 choices. Kucinich and Ron Paul are fringe candidates anyway. Both are nuts.

Name one great idea Obama has that no one else does. Just one. Oh that is right he doesn\'t. What makes him different? Oh yeah he is the only black guy running! Anyway, he likes to act like he isn\'t part of the establishment, but he is. I would rather vote for a former mayor or governor before I would vote for a member of congress.
-
Look at my first post, im not for obama. I was talking about black candidates in general, since there will be more in the future
-

Wasn\'t addressing you Viper. I basically posed the question to Obama supporters.
-
Obama because I like him the best out of the candidates. He could really open a new chapter in American history and not because he\'s black. He seems to offer something new. Plus he is very open, especially about his past. I admire that.
If I had to choose for republicans, I like Giulliani the best but I\'m more than likely voting democrat this election.
-
I think Core made good picks for only having 10 choices. Kucinich and Ron Paul are fringe candidates anyway. Both are nuts.
And those on the list that he presented aren\'t?
I\'m not denying that Kucinich isn\'t a little nuts, but I\'d rather support him than any of the other front running candidates. At least he\'s not billing the city so he can go on sex romps.
-
Contradict yourself much?
Also he is just as much a player in Washington as any of the other candidates. He is in the Senate - the most corrupt branch of the entire government.
There was some sarcasm there,....even when Sharpton was trying for the presidency i didn\'t support him,...nobody would take him seriously...Obama just seems more real than some of the other candidates....and guiliani? yea i agree with some in here that he rides that 911 event way too much....
-

And Obama doesn\'t play the race card? Which is worse riding 9/11 or riding the race card?
-
And Obama doesn\'t play the race card? Which is worse riding 9/11 or riding the race card?
both are stupid. even if i had to pick, the race card is less heartless. people didnt die with the race card, it\'s only really frusterating when it\'s used.
-
I don\'t remember hearing Obama playing a race card. I\'m not saying he has never done it, but it\'s definitely not something he\'s known for. Not the way Giuliani is known for riding the 9/11 wave.
-
And Obama doesn\'t play the race card? Which is worse riding 9/11 or riding the race card?
Either one is useless....and i have never heard Obama play the race card,..i have heard the media play it a thousand times...."is america ready for the 1st black prez?"... "will blue collar and middle income white families vote for a black candidate?"..<---but i can answer that one.... white america would rather have a white woman be prez first before any african american.....how about we ignore the color of his skin and vote for what we like in him.....
It\'s also amazing at how i\'m all of sudden votin\' for him because he\'s black but in the past when sharpton and another afri. american woman were running i didn\'t support either,...i ended up supportin\' bush....why?...because at the time i felt he was just the best candidate out of a very weak roster of candidates...but i guess as long as there are all white candidates goin\' for the presidency white folk won\'t have a problem with black folk votin\' for them...but let a real legit afri. american come through with decent views and if some afri. americans vote for him, all of a sudden we\'re indirectly being racist....
-

I\'m white and would vote for Obama over Hillary.
-
It still amazes me that in this day and age we still judge candidates by the color of their skin. People need to grow up, seriously.
-
It still amazes me that in this day and age we still judge candidates by the color of their skin. People need to grow up, seriously.
it\'s not really about growing up. We just got lucky with when we were born. it\'s kind of ironic cuz it\'s definitly the media that keeps putting this shit in people heads
But looking at it realistically, i think it\'s going to be a while till we look at a candidate (it will never happen in our daily lives) and not look at color or gender. we arent going to go from having all white old guys to diverse/unbiased (in the sense you base your decisions on gender/race) in one election
-
We would need both a solid female and solid non-white President, before it ever became a "non-issue" and even then, with the media spin and hype, it\'ll become an issue at one point.
And come on, Obama has not been playing the race card, at least not the to the 9/11 Gulliani extent. I can\'t even stomach that man now.
With that said...I won\'t vote period. I think they\'re all jackasses.
-
They all suck......
-
Rudy.. Keep flushing that toilet!
-
I actually like the choices this election.
Huckabee or Guiliani for me. After watching the cnn debates for the primaries they seem the most intelligent and passionate about wanting to help this country.
Just some random huckabee vid: http://youtube.com/watch?v=3sdZY3oSupU
-
Voting for someone because of their image, or for historical reasons, is thoughtless.
Does anyone here like Ron Paul? His foreign policy is what sold me.
-
Why would you vote Republican...get these far right extremists out of power anywhere you can.
-

Bible belt!
That Hickabee guy seems quite fun, hope he wins. :thumb: Did I see Chuck Norris in the background of Hickabees can-I-has-win speech? Chuck, you are dead to me.
-
Obviously I can\'t vote, but if I could I\'d go for Obama for sure. He seems like the most intelligent and well spoken out of the bunch (from what I\'ve seen anyway). I think he could win... "24" primed your country for a black president. :D
I don\'t know why anyone would vote for Huckabee or Guiliani though. Or any republican for that matter. ;)
-

i saw that too and wondered if it was Chuck. Was it really him?
-
I would vote for Samwise to be president if there\'s that option.:p
-

Wouldnt surprise me the least.. he seems like one of those scary baptist type dudes.

This is America, we don\'t vote on intelligence. You should know this.

Oh god, if Huckabee won, there really is no hope for this country. Giulliani I would vote for if I had to go Republican. But my choice is Obama. He\'s young and fresh and has a lot to offer.
-

i fail to see your reasoning
whats so good about giulliani? you know his name?
THIS is the epitomy of guiliani..also an example of why having only these 2 parties (that win) is stupid

Guliani is such a f**kin\' idiot... his whole campaign is nothin\' but september 11th shut the f**k up!...Ron Paul was 100% right, granted those assholes that hit the twin towers on that day were crazed lunatics, there\'s a reason for the hatred, i\'ve always stated that the u.s. probably enforces unfair policies abroad that we just don\'t hear about... i mean think about it...we do actually have a base in just about every country in the world and the fact the u.s is building a billion dollar embassy in iraq just reinforces this theory...and who in the world is really going to muscle us around? other than China, Germany and maybe Russia?
Now i don\'t think the u.s deserved what happpened on 911 because those people as we all know have some serious religious beliefs and mental issues goin\' on with them, but i do believe that our policies over seas was part of the reason for them attackin us..
-
I dont want to hijack the thread with 9/11 stuff (puuunnnnnnn) i just wanted to show what guiliani does with his bs
But yea..they need to make a list of things the candidates stand for/what their policies are. Debates are filled with a bunch of PR talking and the questions that the dudes give are horrendous. not only that but they give them like 3 minutes to talk about illegal immigrants
-
If Guilani wins, the first thing he should do is call off the hunt for Osama and send him a "Thank You" card for getting him in office, because that\'s all that man is. One big September 11th fest.
-

First that clip that was posted is from back in May and Guiliani was responding to Ron Paul bringing up 9/11. Ron Paul is so wrong. Islamic Fundamentalists hate us not only for our policy on Israel, but for our way of life, which they consider un-Islamic.
Guiliani has every right to respond to statements about 9/11 considering he was the mayor at the time. That is like saying Obama shouldn\'t talk about race because he is black :fro: .
With that said, I am leaning more now towards McCain. As much as I like Guiliani I don\'t think he can win the nomination.
I just can\'t vote for a guy whose first name is very similar to a MKII character and who has an Arabic middle name. He may be well spoken, but I have seen nothing of substance in anything he says other than he is all about "change". Talk about vague.
-

There is a difference in responding to a statement and playing a card. Guilani has been playing the September 11th card since September 12th.
-

I hope your Arabic comment was in jest because otherwise you\'re just a racist prick.
-

.
did you hear what ron paul was talking about? it\'s as if guiliani blanked out 90% of what ron paul said and was like "you\'re saying we caused 9/11..take that back so i can make a spectacle out of myself and a monster out of you"
tired of the selective hearing that goes on during election time..i always end up losing hope in our system at some point.
-
I hope your Arabic comment was in jest because otherwise you\'re just a racist prick.
I choose the latter. I don\'t subscribe to political correctness and never will. Sue me.
-
Lol Giga, not voting for someone because of their name is the most ridiculous thing ever.
-
seriously..
not to mention his dads from kenya and his mom was a white american.
all the candidates are riding the \'change\' wave..i think every crowd will give a candidate a standing ovation if they say that word.
-
How about President Huckabee???? Just as stupid. Anyway, I am not going to jump on the Obama bandwagon. He has offered nothing in the way of a plan other then he is the candidate of "change". How many other politicians have said this?
Unfortunately, most people will vote for him due to his skin color, because after all - it is the progressive thing to do.
-

I agree with that. Unfortunately, the only way real change will happen is if we can elect someone who is not affiliated with either party. Time to retire both the Dems and the Republicans.
-
Unfortunately, most people will vote for him due to his skin color, because after all - it is the progressive thing to do.
we already went over this..you\'re no better than them for not voting for him because of his skin color/his name. In fact it\'s probably worse to be racist as opposed to just ignorant.
and don\'t say you not voting for him because of his policies..early in the thread you said you wouldnt vote for a black president because of the portion of the population that votes for him just because he\'s black.
basically, you made up your mind, nothings going to change it, and selective hearing kicks in
-
Wrong - I won\'t vote for him because he hasn\'t said anything "new". I haven\'t heard one original thought come out of his mouth. I just don\'t like all this crap about how he is special and different and the second coming of JFK, blah blah blah. You would think by all the hoopla it that he is the second coming of Christ.
I also don\'t like I don\'t like his name or his racist church in Chicago.
You are also wrong because if it came down to him or Huckabee I would vote for him.
-
Well, can we all now establish that Giga\'s opinion is just plain stupid? Not supporting someone due to their race / gender / Arabic name is just plain racist and old fashioned.
Already knew you was a prick, just didn\'t realize you was a racist prick.
Nifty.
-
My opinion stupid? Take a look at what you wrote.
Obama.

Thanks for proving my point. :D

Mine was in jest.
Your\'s wasn\'t.
Nice try tho\'. Next time at least think before trying to dig up a post. That post is so obviously sarcasm at it\'s finest. Where as your post was just being a racist ignorant prick.
-
I don\'t regard you with enough intelligence to make such a post in jest. Actually, I don\'t believe for one minute it was in jest. Go back to your reading your comic books or posting in console discussion where you have somewhat of a leg to stand on.
Because I don\'t like someone\'s name it is racist? How easily that word is thrown around. I have already explained why I didn\'t think he was the best candidate - seems you focused a little too much on my last statement about his name.
-

The fact that you refuse to vote on these things .
1: People will vote because he\'s black, so you won\'t vote?
2: He has an Arabic name or whatever.
You can try to play this off or undermine due to the fact I read "comic books", as if that somehow makes you so much more mature. But you\'re the one, who has now been called out by me and other members for showing your ignorance . Ignorance based off of race.
-
I refuse to vote for him based on the sole fact that he is black. Is it that hard to read into?? Now, for the 50th time I am asking for reasons I should vote for him.
It seems sarcasm is lost on you. Samwise got it, but you and Viper seemed to totally miss it. Who cares. The question I have been asking remains unanswered...
I am trying to figure out what the fascination with Obama is from people that support him and the media. For the life of me, I don\'t see the difference other than the color of his skin. I have noticed people have voted for him the poll and I am looking for one of them to give me a reason other than race. You can see their issues in a thumbnail side by side at the link below. They all seem pretty similar to me.
http://www.thebostonchannel.com/compare-candidates/index.html
And if I really am so racist - why have I repeatedly said throughout this thread that I would vote for him depending on his opponent - due to the fact I dislike their views more.
-
Unfortunately, most people will vote for him due to his skin color, because after all - it is the progressive thing to do.
Well let me just say this..giga according to your logic Obama will be the next prez hands down...i\'d like to give you the benefit of the doubt and maybe there was some sarcasm in your statements, but it seemed like you was being more "serious" in your statements than relatively joking.....Obama has a chance tru enough but the reality is that there are racist assholes that won\'t vote for him because of his skin,..he already had to deal with numerous scenarios of racial threats during his campaign...
Like i stated earlier white folk don\'t have a problem with black folk votin\' for them...it\'s not like when there all white candidates the african american race just didn\'t vote,...nope we came out and voted for that white person, but because this person is black, the s**t is a big issue,..shame really that some still have that 60\'s mentality....it\'s funny how black folk have never brought up the issue of race when votin\' for somebody white, but some of you white folk are pretty much having a heart attack over a candidate that\'s not even president yet....
-
clips,
interesting points there...

If he wins the nomination he will win the Presidency. The only thing that could mess him up now is Hillary because she has enough electorates promised to her.
-
Woohoo - McCain up in NH. I am a bit puzzled by the close race that Hil-Dog is giving Obama.
After seeing McCain in 2000 and McCain now - he seems a lot more calm than he did then.
-
I am determined to vote democrat this upcoming election for obvious reasons (I am a registered republican), but if Hillary is the nominee I will not be able to. Really surprised by her win tonight
-
so much for blackd not voting for Obama, huh Giga? 80%
25% of the white vote (split between 3 people aint bad).. if this holds up in upcoming states Hillary could be done (thank God)
-
That\'s good news for obama...:thumb:...i really don\'t hate hillary tho,..only for the fact that even if she becomes prez,..i know that her hubby will probably be coachin\' her on the sidelines...i just think hillary is a bit robotic and doesn\'t really connect with folks when she speaks....i still think that a Obama/Hillary meaning prez/vice prez or vice versa would be huge for the next eight years...but it doesn\'t seem that they would chose each-other from the way they\'re beefin\'...
-

I said blacks will vote for him mostly because of his race. Real Time with Bill Maher a few weeks ago had him going through a mall asking blacks who they were going to vote for and all except one said they were voting for Obama - one even said "the black guy" even though he knew nothing of about any of the candidates let alone their names.
Dick Morris also had a good point that Hillary wanted to lose SC badly to polarize the rest of the primary between blacks and whites. Even if Hillary gets 3/4 of the white vote and almost none of the black vote she will still win. If anyone thinks race and gender have nothing to do with candidate preference they are fooling only themselves.
Should be an interesting Super Tuesday.

Well what you\'d expect? they don\'t call us the minority for nothing....you guys are the majority!...:p...Obama just needs to be smart, and he has been... if he comes off as bein pro-black he\'ll lose the white support he has in a heartbeat...as it stands he\'s been maintaining a very balanced movement...i still think hillary is going to win it all regardless of the republicans...but i feel it\'s going to be a very tight campaign between Obama and hillary right to the very end...

I don\'t know - tracking polls indicate that Clinton is losing support, especially over the past month. I will give one thing to Obama, he is an excellent speaker and is running a good campaign. His major drawback is that he is a freshman Senator and a lot view his lack of experience as a handicap.

Meanwhile, Republicans in Florida seem to love a guy with TOO MUCH experience.
By that I mean McCain, who as one foot in the grave.

Well considering the choices... :piss: Romney? Huckabee?
A lot of Republicans do not like McCain at all. I guess some conservatives don\'t understand that if a Republican has a chance to win the Whitehouse it needs to be a moderate one. Giuliani pretty much blew any chance he had with his strategy of focusing on Florida.
-
I really didn\'t know what these delegates or superdelegates are, but now that i have a better understanding of it, i think it\'s all bulls**t...how can these people in power practically undo what the people of the state voted for? So it really doesn\'t matter who we vote for, these delegates have the power to give their vote to the candidate that "they" seem fit and it will be their vote that matters,...our vote at most might sway them to vote for the person that has the most votes....
-
^ if you don\'t like the way they vote then vote them out of office next election

when its too late..
not that anyone really knows anything about their delegates. i dont..not that i voted for them

I just think it\'s a broken and unfair policy....the person with the most votes should win...period...
-
I just think it\'s a broken and unfair policy....the person with the most votes should win...period...
the problem with that is the unbalance of populations in states. It totally makes sense, that most votes should just mean theyre the winner. But all the people in california and texas would completely shut out anything that the smaller states want to say.
Our electoral college is frusterating but..going by the # of votes alone wouldnt be as fair as it sounds

Our founding fathers didn\'t trust us enough to elect the right person and with good reason.

Our founding fathers didn\'t trust us enough to elect the right person and with good reason.
Then in that case why give us the right to vote at all? A mirage maybe? The illusion of having the control of our country when we really don\'t?
I\'m rooting for Obama. I hate Hillary and do not want her to win. It was very surprising to see McCain come up as a front runner on the Republican side but then again the other candidates where not very eligible. I wanted Hillary to win just so my vote would be easier and I could vote McCain but if Obama wins it is going to be a tough decision on who I should support with a bumper sticker.
-

maybe because they didnt have the media around to tell people about the candidates...which is basically the same as now.

I would need a cigar and maybe some Crown on the rocks for that revelation.
I wonder what would happen if the general public was aware enough to realize that all this really doesn\'t count?

So what you\'re saying is you have no interest in the policies or positions of the candidates. You simply hate Hillary Clinton and you\'re planning to cast your ballot solely on the basis of personality.
I have no problem with someone hating Hillary; in fact I can somewhat understand that. But to acknowledge that you have no beliefs of your own, and you would vote simply to vote against her is completely idiotic.
With time comes knowledge and maturity.
Maybe you should reflect on this a little more.

Well, I never said the reasons why I hate Hillary. I would think that hating a candidate entails or at least it should entail that the person that makes such a claim has a reason to hate a candidate.
I don\'t literally hate her, I don\'t like her policies and the way she goes around doing business. Obama strikes me as more honest (i.e. "What is your weakness question?) I don\'t like the idea of healthcare for everybody because I don\'t think it can be done especially with this country\'s current financial situation.
I have a strong feeling that Hillary would further push the already partisan environment in the senate and in the government in general which would make it more difficult to get things done in order to get this country back on track to the economic, social and political power we ought to be.

St. Paul Pioneer Press: Edwards and Clinton would require all Americans to have health insurance. Obama\'s plan guarantees coverage for all Americans but does not require all to have it.
st.paul.obamaAs we\'ve noted previously, there is an important semantic distinction here. Obama\'s plan wouldn\'t guarantee that every individual had health insurance, just that everyone would have the opportunity to obtain it. Under the Clinton and Edwards plans, coverage would be required, and thus truly universal, at least in theory. Obama\'s clipping of the Pioneer Press article omits this point.
http://www.factcheck.org/obamas_creative_clippings.html
Obama says it\'s "universal" only because liberal individuals are more in tune with such an offer. In reality, he has a more realistic way of approaching the problem which is by acting on the healthcare companies and their high prices.
McCain does have more faults but he is a much better candidate than Hillary if she won in my opinion.
-
I\'ve kinda just given up on that whole universal healthcare bit,...it\'s a nice gesture by all candidates involved, but it will ultimately take money to finance such programs and alot of it, and any surplus that the u.s. did have was sucked dry during this iraq war....it really is sad when the u.s. has to borrow money from China to support the war....so the universal healthcare bit is wishful thinking, but it\'s just like the social security situation, which at this point is non-existant for any of us or our kids because of the gov\'t taking from it so much....
-
But is it so much wishful thinking if the war is ended? Not saying I totally agree with just ending our occupation suddenly... but spending nearly 500 billion on this stupid ass war just to overthrow Saddam instead of spending it in our own country for our own people... I can\'t get with that.
I always thought the Republican Party was about limited government, more individual responsibility. Wasn\'t it Ronald Regan that said "Government is not the solution, it is the problem."? What the hell happened that that ideal?
The U.S. Government has grown larger than ever before under the Bush Administration.. the deficit is larger than ever under the Bush Administration. I know some this this can be attributed to 9/11, but the B.A. seems to think the American dollar is monopoly money.
I\'m a Republican voting for Obama. If Hillary gets the nomination I fear she will not win, she has a severe P.R. problem & nobody except staunch dems will vote for her. Obama is already starting to siphon independents from McCain.
-
^ I agree with what JBean said.

I don\'t care why you dislike Hillary. That was not the question.
Let me rephrase my earlier statement: WHY IN THE HELL WOULD YOU VOTE FOR MCCAIN????? You stated that in a contest between Obama and Mccain, it would be hard for you to decide "who I should support with a bumper sticker." Can you not perceive a significant difference between those two candidates?

JBean you are a RINO - not a Republican. Anyone who votes for Obama is a fool. Two years in the Senate with NO notable accomplishments does not qualify one for the office of President. Stupid college kids voting for Obama because he is black and it is the cool thing to do, and oh yeah he has that hip slogan "Change you can believe in"... For the love of god ELABORATE!!!!
Pull us out of Iraq in 6 months and see what happens. Obama will be another Jimmy Carter. Not to mention be prepared to have a lighter wallet if he wins.

Obama’s Global Tax Proposal Up for Senate Vote
By Cliff Kincaid (02/13/08)
The American Daily
[Excerpted]
A nice-sounding bill called the "Global Poverty Act," sponsored by Democratic presidential candidate and Senator Barack Obama, is up for a Senate vote on Thursday and could result in the imposition of a global tax on the United States. The bill, which has the support of many liberal religious groups, makes levels of U.S. foreign aid spending subservient to the dictates of the United Nations.
Senator Joe Biden, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, has not endorsed either Senator Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton in the presidential race. But on Thursday, February 14, he is trying to rush Obama\'s "Global Poverty Act" (S.2433) through his committee. The legislation would commit the U.S. to spending 0.7 percent of gross national product on foreign aid, which amounts to a phenomenal 13-year total of $845 billion over and above what the U.S. already spends.
The bill, which is item number four on the committee\'s business meeting agenda, passed the House by a voice vote last year because most members didn\'t realize what was in it. Congressional sponsors have been careful not to calculate the amount of foreign aid spending that it would require. According to the website of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, no hearings have been held on the Obama bill in that body.
A release from the Obama Senate office about the bill declares, "In 2000, the U.S. joined more than 180 countries at the United Nations Millennium Summit and vowed to reduce global poverty by 2015. We are halfway towards this deadline, and it is time the United States makes it a priority of our foreign policy to meet this goal and help those who are struggling day to day."
The legislation itself requires the President "to develop and implement a comprehensive strategy to further the United States foreign policy objective of promoting the reduction of global poverty, the elimination of extreme global poverty, and the achievement of the Millennium Development Goal of reducing by one-half the proportion of people worldwide, between 1990 and 2015, who live on less than $1 per day."
The bill defines the term "Millennium Development Goals" as the goals set out in the United Nations Millennium Declaration, General Assembly Resolution 55/2 (2000).
The U.N. says that "The commitment to provide 0.7% of gross national product (GNP) as official development assistance was first made 35 years ago in a General Assembly resolution, but it has been reaffirmed repeatedly over the years, including at the 2002 global Financing for Development conference in Monterrey, Mexico. However, in 2004, total aid from the industrialized countries totaled just $78.6 billion-or about 0.25% of their collective GNP."
In addition to seeking to eradicate poverty, that declaration commits nations to banning "small arms and light weapons" and ratifying a series of treaties, including the International Criminal Court Treaty, the Kyoto Protocol (global warming treaty), the Convention on Biological Diversity, the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women, and the Convention on the Rights of the Child.
The Millennium Declaration also affirms the U.N. as "the indispensable common house of the entire human family, through which we will seek to realize our universal aspirations for peace, cooperation and development."
Jeffrey Sachs, who runs the U.N.\'s "Millennium Project," says that the U.N. plan to force the U.S. to pay 0.7 percent of GNP in increased foreign aid spending would add $65 billion a year to what the U.S. already spends. Over a 13-year period, from 2002, when the U.N.\'s Financing for Development conference was held, to the target year of 2015, when the U.S. is expected to meet the "Millennium Development Goals," this amounts to $845 billion. And the only way to raise that kind of money, Sachs has written, is through a global tax, preferably on carbon-emitting fossil fuels.
Obama\'s bill has only six co-sponsors. They are Senators Maria Cantwell, Dianne Feinstein, Richard Lugar, Richard Durbin, Chuck Hagel and Robert Menendez. But it appears that Biden and Obama see passage of this bill as a way to highlight Democratic Party priorities in the Senate.
The House version (H.R. 1302), sponsored by Rep. Adam Smith (D-Wash.), had only 84 co-sponsors before it was suddenly brought up on the House floor last September 25 and was passed by voice vote. House Republicans were caught off-guard, unaware that the pro-U.N. measure committed the U.S. to spending hundreds of billions of dollars.

Keep the money here and help US citizens. Eradicate poverty HERE!!!!! I don\'t give a fuck about the rest of the world. People really want to vote for this guy???

Hey Giga. I just read the full text of S.2433 on the Library of Congress website, and it doesn\'t say anything about requiring the US to pay .7% of GNP in foreign aid. Take a look at it yourself. I\'m not sure if this link will work, but you can certainly navigate to it from thomas.loc.gov

Maybe because I like them both. I see them both as able to reach across the table to get things done rather than stalemating the whole process. McCain is older, more experienced and more knowledgeable with foreign affairs, budgets and has a more conservative healtcare plan which I think he should shake up a bit.
Obama is well...new. He is younger and very thoughtful. (It seems) But he is very inexperienced (only two years?) and I don\'t think he has full confidence he can be the next president.
If it came down to it I would likely sway Obama because it\'s the "cool thing" to do because I\'m in college and you know how easily we are swayed by the masses and can never make a choice based on what we know and what we research...
Not really.
McCain\'s reluctancy to call the Iraq war a disaster is very distracting. On top of that I feel as if a younger more in tune president is what this country needs at this point. I\'m very much a risk taker and I think I would like to take that risk with Obama.

^^^I like this guy....:fro:...Giga you really need to stop...people are votin\' for him because he\'s black and it\'s the cool thing to do?....:p.....like i stated before, we have somebody with experience in the white house now and look at what direction the country is going in....the housing market is a mess...people are fearing we\'re leaning towards a recession,...we\'re spending millions monthly on an iraq war than really has no end in sight,...and regardless of of iraq having fewer suicide attacks (instead of say 20 a day it\'s reduced down to 10).....and you still can\'t walk around there safely without gettin\' shot or for fear of gettin\' killed.
I enjoyed the Bill Clinton years....but Hillary is just of a different breed, when she speaks she just sounds robotic and talks like a true politician,....Obama is fresh and new and he can connect better with the american people better than Hillary,....if he\'s elected President, only time will tell if his inexperience will be a factor, but one thing is certain and that is a change is definitely needed in washington....
-
I guess I am a RINO. Born and raised in a Republican household where I didn\'t dare question why I was a Republican... you just were under my stepdad\'s roof. As I got older and graduated college I started to question why I was still a Republican. Now I\'m an Independent.. at least I will be as soon as I get around to changing my party affiliation.
I am also a Christian (not trying to bring religion into this... woops) so I am bombarded with friends of mine who vote the straight republican ticket. I just always felt that the majority of the Republicans in congress merely pander to the Evangelical vote. And most Christians who vote straight down the party lines each election don\'t really dig into the bible and see all the ways the Republican Party does NOT follow many of the teachings in it. No doubt, I agree with some of their stances on moral issues, but when it comes to social issues the dems aren\'t perfect.. but they are better IMO.
Oh, and i also dislike career politicians. I am all for a 2 term limit for all positions in elected government. And I like Obama because I feel he hasn\'t been "corrupted" or learned to "accept" what goes on behind closed doors in our Government. If anything this next president needs to be a master of inspiration and motivation rather than have loads of experience.
Bush fucked up this country well enough, and I figure Obama couldn\'t do any worse ;).. I hope the Republicans get their asses kicked this fall and learn from their (his) mistakes.

Keep drinking the koolaide. Obama will be the worst thing to happen to this country if he is elected. He is the MOST LIBERAL senator in the entire senate. When the attacks between the candidates start in earnest this will be brought up and the vote-blinders on quite a few people will come off. If you think the economy is bad now - wait until Baraka gets a hold of it with all his grand ideas to eliminate poverty and give people free healthcare. Who is going to pay for this????
But, is being black, charismatic, and having a good voice enough to qualify a man to be President of the United States? If so, maybe the GOP should see if we can get James Earl Jones or the Rock to run as McCain\'s veep. They\'re both charismatic, they\'re both black, and as an added bonus, neither of them is significantly less qualified to be President of the United States than Barack Obama.

Hah ha ha. Since you can\'t defend the bullshit in that paranoid conservative nonsense you found on the americandaily website, I\'ll take that as an admission that I\'m right and you\'re wrong.
I know you\'re smart enough to understand perfectly well that there is nothing in the Senate bill that commits the US to ANY increase in foreign aid, much less the billions hypothesized by that kook Kincaid. Likewise, UN Resolution 55/2 doesn\'t say anything about requiring any increase in foreign aid from nations that adopt it.
I propose that we all agree to discuss REALITY on this forum, and not post FANTASY editorials from wacko websites. Does that sound OK with you?

Obama Casts His Spell
Realclearpolitics.com
By Charles Krauthammer
February 15, 2008
Excerpt:
WASHINGTON -- There\'s no better path to success than getting people to buy a free commodity. Like the genius who figured out how to get people to pay for water: bottle it (Aquafina was revealed to be nothing more than reprocessed tap water) and charge more than they pay for gasoline. Or consider how Google found a way to sell dictionary nouns -- boat, shoe, clock -- by charging advertisers zillions to be listed whenever the word is searched.
And now, in the most amazing trick of all, a silver-tongued freshman senator has found a way to sell hope. To get it, you need only give him your vote. Barack Obama is getting millions.
This kind of sale is hardly new. Organized religion has been offering a similar commodity -- salvation -- for millennia. Which is why the Obama campaign has the feel of a religious revival with, as writer James Wolcott observed, a "salvational fervor" and "idealistic zeal divorced from any particular policy or cause and chariot-driven by pure euphoria."
"We are the hope of the future," sayeth Obama. We can "remake this world as it should be." Believe in me and I shall redeem not just you but your country -- nay, we can become "a hymn that will heal this nation, repair this world, and make this time different than all the rest."
And believe they do. After eight straight victories -- and two more (Hawaii and Wisconsin) almost certain to follow -- Obama is near to rendering moot all the post-Super Tuesday fretting about a deadlocked convention with unelected superdelegates deciding the nominee. Unless Hillary Clinton can somehow do in Ohio and Texas on March 4 what Rudy Giuliani proved is almost impossible to do -- maintain a big-state firewall after an unrelenting string of smaller defeats -- the superdelegates will flock to Obama. Hope will have carried the day.
Interestingly, Obama has been able to win these electoral victories and dazzle crowds in one new jurisdiction after another, even as his mesmeric power has begun to arouse skepticism and misgivings among the mainstream media.
ABC\'s Jake Tapper notes the "Helter-Skelter cultish qualities" of "Obama worshipers," what Joel Stein of the Los Angeles Times calls "the Cult of Obama." Obama\'s Super Tuesday victory speech was a classic of the genre. Its effect was electric, eliciting a rhythmic fervor in the audience -- to such rhetorical nonsense as "We are the ones we\'ve been waiting for. (Cheers, applause.) We are the change that we seek."
That was too much for Time\'s Joe Klein. "There was something just a wee bit creepy about the mass messianism ... ," he wrote. "The message is becoming dangerously self-referential. The Obama campaign all too often is about how wonderful the Obama campaign is."
You might dismiss The New York Times\' Paul Krugman\'s complaint that "the Obama campaign seems dangerously close to becoming a cult of personality" as hyperbole. Until you hear Chris Matthews, who no longer has the excuse of youth, react to Obama\'s Potomac primary victory speech with "My, I felt this thrill going up my leg." When his MSNBC co-hosts tried to bail him out, he refused to recant. Not surprising for an acolyte who said that Obama "comes along, and he seems to have the answers. This is the New Testament."
*snip*
Obama has an astonishingly empty paper trail. He\'s going around issuing promissory notes on the future that he can\'t possibly redeem. Promises to heal the world with negotiations with the likes of Iran\'s President Ahmadinejad. Promises to transcend the conundrums of entitlement reform that require real and painful trade-offs and that have eluded solution for a generation. Promises to fund his other promises by a rapid withdrawal from an unpopular war -- with the hope, I suppose, that the (presumed) resulting increase in American prestige would compensate for the chaos to follow.
Democrats are worried that the Obama spell will break between the time of his nomination and the time of the election, and deny them the White House. My guess is that he can maintain the spell just past Inauguration Day. After which will come the awakening. It will be rude.

The only real ally we have in the Middle East perhaps. What do you have against Israel fastson? Anti semetic?
If you knew anything about this country you would know Carter was despised and a one term president who was only elected because of Watergate. Nobel Peace Prize? LMAO what a joke of an award. Sort of like the Academy Awards.

No, I\'m not a jew hater. Being critical of Israel does not mean I hate jews.
So they get all this free cash and weapons just to.. do what? Has Israel done anything to help you out in Iraq or Afghanistan? What did Israel give to your Katrina-victims?

Are you really that dumb to think it would be a good idea if Israel got involved with Iraq or Afghanistan? Are you wishing for WWIII? It is quite obvious why they haven\'t been involved.
Israel is surrounded by enemies who have tried to destroy Israel time and again... wait a minute - we have had this conversation... I am not wasting anymore time on it. If you don\'t know the history of the region then I suggest you read about it.

Giga, you really are startin\' to act like a moonbat!..:D....I guess he\'s the only candidate makin\' promises and such right?....c\'mon everybody is makin\' promises and stating what they would do for the country....this country is in such bad shape, i don\'t expect the next president(whoever they may be) to fix the problems in in the first four years,...yea it\'s really that bad...it\'s all the same giga,... stop focusing on obama so much because he\'s black..Obama\'s theme is hope and people are eating it up.....McCains theme is hope also and he too has a following....Hillary? she\'s singin\' the same song...as a matter of fact they all are....they are all sayin\' s**t to get people to vote for them...
And stop sayin\' it\'s the cool thing to do because he\'s black...Al Sharpton and Jessie Jackson didn\'t have this type of following and again when it was all white candidates goin\' for the presidency white folks had no problem with black folks votin\' for them,...so don\'t try and say it\'s hip and cool to vote for him because he\'s black....look pass the color and don\'t follow the masses who will always bring up race when it comes to him,...judge him on his thoughts and ideas, not on his race, and then if you criticize him, then i can respect you a bit more in that sense...

Are you really that dumb to think it would be a good idea if Israel got involved with Iraq or Afghanistan? Are you wishing for WWIII? It is quite obvious why they haven\'t been involved.
Sure, why not? Involvement doesnt just mean boots on the ground.
Change the question then, what has Israel ever done for you? Except blow up your ships. :thumb:
But hey, its your tax money. Enjoy!

Just so you know Giga, the KKK is still taking applications.

anyone else getting the sense clinton gave cnn a bunch of money in light of obama winning like 11 states in a row?
http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/02/23/clinton.mailings/index.html
http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/politics/2008/02/23/mcintyre.obama.fact.check.cnn
im not saying they shouldnt be talking about this stuff on obama, but multiple, separate things just ragging on the guy with no sense of balance seemed odd to me. specifically the second link..im sure theres a few anecdotes that both of them have twisted some words around in their favor, but to only go through all that trouble for one (leading) runner..cnn also had the whole \'obama using someone elses words in his speech\' on front page not too long ago

Please ...anyone BUT that cow ...Hillary "Snipers Shot at me and no it wasn\'t a little girl hugging me " Clinton .
Hillary-Courage under (imaginary) sniper fire
Liberal Larry\'s been in especially good form lately. Here he takes the relentlessly conservative media to task for their cruelty to history\'s finest, and most daring, First Lady:
"\'I remember landing under sniper fire,\' Mrs. Clinton reminisced about a 1996 trip to war-torn Bosnia. \'There was supposed to be some kind of a greeting ceremony at the airport, but instead we just ran with our heads down to get into the vehicles to get to our base...\'
"But less than a New York Minute after Hillary astounded us with her tale of heroism, the Vast Right Wing Conspiracy was already calling her a liar. The Conservative Broadcasting Service (CBS) even aired archival footage of a giddy First Lady springing off her plane in Bosnia to a friendly greeting ceremony and mingling with the crowd.
"Sure, Hillary\'s story may seem like a lie when you contrast it with the truth, but only a partisan hack would go to such trouble...."
"Was Hillary exposed to gunfire? I guess not. But so what? If being exposed to gunfire is what a candidate needs, I recommend a visit to Detroit on a Saturday night. Hillary will hear enough gunfire to give her real street cred."
oh crap better take all this back looks like it was all true :o

Would they ever land a first lady under sniper fire? I mean I don\'t like the chick, but you have to use your brain.

If it was Hilary then yeah.
I bet Bill ordered the sniper fire. It was his only way out. Doesn\'t look good for a politician, especially the president, when they divorce. Bill wanted to get freaky around the White House and Hil was just holding him back.

It could be something thats common to the Clinton Family.
Bill "I Did not have sexual realtions with that woman"
What he was thinking " Dude... surely Oral Sex don\'t count"
Hillary "\'I remember landing under sniper fire"
What she was thinking at the time "the range of a good sniper is 50 miles..right ?"
