I went to a store that had 72 on hand and there was over a 100 people lined up to buy the system. Is the system that great? I just don\'t see all the hype.
-
Thank you for making a pointless thread.
You don\'t see the hype - someone else does. Get over it.
Personally, if I knew a store that was going to have them, I\'d most likely go ahead and line up and get one, for Mario Galaxy. I refuse to buy one off Ebay, as of now.
Oh and it\'s Xmas. People will line up for shoveled shit, if there is enough hype.

Well it is cheap, different and it appeals a lot to demographics that Sony and MS failed to target.
If you are interested for Nintendo specific games (which are great), games for quick fan and old classics then Wii can be your ultimate choice. Other than that, it doesnt offer much for very demanding gamers.

they didnt really fail to target them..they just didnt target them. it worked last generation, not bothering with the casual casual gamers.
the difference is the wii got a lot better reception than the gamecube..iv played neither so i cant say ones better than the other

True

The price tag is a huge part of it. For younger audiences (i.e. the people that parents are lining up to get gifts for) it\'s also got a lot of appeal. For me, as someone who really is mostly a casual gamer at this point, it has plenty of appeal. I\'m not looking for in depth games most of the time, just something I can enjoy with friends or kill 20 minutes with, and the Wii works for that.
-
A few points..
1: The price tag is a huge factor. With all these four hundred dollar consoles, $250 console, with a pack-in game is a bargain. Sure, it doesn\'t do all the other stuff the other consoles do, but the price tag alone can sell it, without any fancy features.
2: Sony and Microsoft forgot all about the casual gamer. With them, it has been nothing but big name titles that require a nice big attention span. Nintendo was smart to avoid this whole thing (much like they done with the DS) and go for another market. They truly finished what Sony started and that is bringing gaming to the mainstream. I know people who have never played a single videogame and want a Wii. There is something to be said for that .
3: Among the "hardcore", Nintendo first party titles still stand for quality titles and that can sell the system to that audience. I fall into that one. The Gamecube was a let down, but the first party titles still made it worth it for me, the same applies to the Nintendo 64. The difference now is that there is enough party games and general appeal that I can enjoy the Wii with my wife and children. Something that for the most part, I can\'t do with my 360 or a PS3 (there are exceptions, as my wife loves Rock Band).
4: The name itself sells now. Nintendo lucked out on this, but the fact that the demand was so high and continued to be so high, it has now created almost a false hype for the system. People who didn\'t want one, want one now. We saw this happen with the PS2 last generation. The difference is, Nintendo\'s luck is even better it seems. I know I read in another article that Nintendo actually plans to cut advertisements down this holiday season, so that people don\'t get to upset when they can\'t find one.
With that said, it amazes me how well the Wii is doing and how well Nintendo is doing because of the Wii. While the other companies are taking a hit with each console sold due to all the fanch technology, Nintendo opted to take older specs, price it to where they can still make a profit off the Wii\'s sold. Really, it is quite brilliant and the fact that when the Wii was announced, most people had already expected it to be a distant third in the "console wars", show just how far off any of those silly predictions are.
I\'m fairly certain that right now, Sony and MS both are kicking themselves in the ass and wishing they would of at least spent some money on developing a product for the casual audience when their respective systems launched.

Well the reason I ask is my brother in law has one. He bought it when it first came out and never opened the thing up. He plays his ps3 and 360. He offered to sell me his wii. I really have not seen a whole lot of game for the system that I might enjoy.
Most of the games seem good if you are having a party. A few of my buddies in programming were bragging about it and everyone I know is trying to get one. I was just trying to find out whats all the hype with it. Maybe I should think of taking up the offer.

Well lic explained you in much detail the reasons. If you fall into any of the categories described get it.
If you dont, I d still recommend it if he sells at an acceptable price. It is cheap thats why many arent worried to pay for something they might not be playing extensively but that was the whole point of the console\'s offerings and price tag. You wont lose anything unless you despise its game offerings
Check metacritic reviews for the best games.

I have always been a mario head and I am hearing good things about the new one. I also would probably enjoy zelda. My last nintendo console was the 64. I was not impressed with the cube. So I guess I kind of just assumed it was the same old same old.
All they showcase all the time is the wii remote and at first it really seemed like a gimmick to me. I just hear so many people saying how fun it is and seeing the demand like that. I would have assume x360/ps3 would be the console of choice.
I just my pick it up. He is not selling it too me no more than retail price and he got a couple of games for it and extra remote he is throwing in. He has a psp/360/ps3 I think he just bought the wii just to buy it.

Well sounds like you should go for it then.
Others are battling to find one with Wii sports and one controller alone. Even pay twice or three times the price because of scarcity ;)
And even if you discover that you dont want it, well, there are so many that would offer their souls for it that you will be able to sell it.

Hmmm...i can\'t find any flaws in LIC\'s post...everything he stated is true and i strongly agree with points 2 & 5 (well the paragraph after 4) because i was one of those that thought the wii would be a distant third....luckily sony built a rep during the psx and ps2 era, and for the fact that their pockets are little deeper than sega\'s,... because if this had been their first outing i think it would be very possible that they would have went the way of the dreamcast....very poor execution with the ps3......and i gotta give Nintendo it\'s due praise.... it\'s ignoring the juggernauts at sony and ms and bringing in record profits for the company by just doing what all of us want in general......games....

The Wii, IMO, has both the 2006 and 2007 Games Of The Year on it.
That\'s Nintendo\'s strength, truly. Their big games are ~big~.
-
Wii Sports is the answer to all your questions.
The console has the lowest attach rate software wise this generation despite selling like gang-busters. The only game that everyone buys for it guaranteed, including myself, is Wii Play for the extra remote. Don\'t kid yourselves into thinking it was Zelda or even Mario that made the system popular.
Wii Sports though, the advertising Nintendo threw behind it, making it a pack-in, it was brilliant. Well played. Well done.
Good pricing, pack-in game, great advertising - it\'s an easy sale. No one predicted it would be THIS popular, but the reasons are really obvious. Wii Sports is over a year old now, but it\'s still the reason all the casuals are after the system.
I\'m fairly certain that right now, Sony and MS both are kicking themselves in the ass and wishing they would of at least spent some money on developing a product for the casual audience when their respective systems launched.
I don\'t think so. I personally think the vast majority of gamers, who were PS2 owners last generation, are still on the fence. I think they\'re waiting, for what i don\'t know, maybe even cheaper prices, but they still have yet to make the leap into next-gen territory. We\'re about two years into this generation (give or take based on launch dates) and the total hardware sales is somewhere around 40 or so million total for all three platforms worldwide. The PS2 sold 100 million in its cycle (and still going) all on its own. Just from the PS2\'s sales standpoint, the vast majority of those same people who now own PS2\'s own nothing from this current generation and are still waiting. That\'s a lot of people and a lot of sales that still have yet to be spoken for by any company.
I\'m a firm believer that MS and Sony are pleased with the success of the Wii. I think both companies truly feel the Wii\'s success isn\'t something that is going to hurt them in the long term and may just open consumer\'s eyes and new markets to gaming in general. I think the same people who are buying Wiis now will buy a PS3 or 360 down the road when they finally hit that magical 199 price point in a few years. The arm-chair analysts who already say the PS3 and 360 are doomed because of the Wii\'s runaway success aren\'t thinking about where the state of the industry will be in 3 to 5 years.
I think the state of the industry will continue to change in 2008. Sony will finally find its footing in the console space and Nintendo will finally start to slow up in its sales and appropriately meet and overcompensate for demand in the US much like it has in Japan. Still, the big players haven\'t been seen yet. The big system sellers of last gen are still a few months off, but they\'re coming. Nintendo is firing on all cylinders right now, but I have a feeling this is going to end up moreso like the tortoise and the Hare then anything else.
Unless Nintendo makes Wii Sports 2 and packs it in with a Wii redesign and sells the game on the shelves for the original Wii adopters as well. Remember the DS everyone - no one gave it a chance until the DS-Lite. Now look at it. Last month it sold more units on its own than all sony consoles (PSP, PS2, PS3) combined.
We\'ll see though... This coming year will be FULL of surprises. I apologize for making this a prediction post. :)

There is already one 6 page argument over the wii...I don\'t know if I can handle another one.
-
"Demanding Gamers".
I\'ve heard it all now.
-
Well I personally didn\'t want one, but got it for Logan because Nintendo has far more kid friendly games than the other two systems. I have to say that it is a lot of fun to play. Graphics blow, but they get by that by not trying to go for true to life graphics. They know they aren\'t the system for graphics, so everything seems to push for more cartoonish looks. It\'s cheap and fun. That\'s about all there is to it.
-
I ended up not getting the Wii because my sister wanted to pick one up for my niece and instead of trying to overpay or chase down stores. She got the one from my brother-in-law. I did get a chance to take a crack at wii sports. While I did find the console a little fun playing around with the family.
I just don\'t see how It could keep my interest at home alone. I am sure it funs for kids as my niece is 10 she loves the thing. I see the wii as being a casual gamers dream. My nephew loves the wii and he is only 6. The thing is they will probably be playing the exact same wii game for the next 8-12months and be happy.
Not saying that is a bad thing because Nintendo will continue to gain nothing but profits and thats what it is all about. The graphics didn\'t grab my attention as compared to what I have seen from x360 and ps3.
-
I owned the Wii for 9 months before I sold it. It\'s the console with the least amount of good games on it. And people rag on the PS3 for the lack of games. This one has 1 or 2. 1 came with it for free.

Metroid.
Zelda
Mario
Wii Sports
There is four right off the bat.
Coming soon, SSMB.
-
I owned zelda. It was fantastic at first. Then it got real boring for some reason. It just didn\'t hold my interest like Ocarina of Time.
Wii Sports is amazing.
Never liked Metroid. Sorry. Even the one for Wii. I tried it. Luckily I rented it. By the time Mario came out, the Wii was already sold.
So....Wii sports was the best game for mii.
-
Does PS3 even have 4 great exclusive titles?
All I know is Uncharted was the only game I liked for it that I couldn\'t play on 360. I definitely wouldn\'t put it in the same league as Metroid Zelda or Mario though.
-
Gman: I don\'t care for Metroid either, but going by critic and average user reviews, then it would be considered a great game. The same applies to the others I mentioned.
Jumpy : The same applies. Uncharted sucks in my opinion, but the average person likes it.

I have to agree with QuDDus. I find the Wii a lot of fun to play with friends. We\'ll crack a few beers and play Wii Sports and have a blast. However, though there are a few good exclusives, I never have gotten into those games. I grew up a Playstation gamer so all the exclusives I\'d buy are on there. Where I would have fun with Wii Sports and Super Smash Brothers and other party games, when I\'m alone, it wouldn\'t hold my interest for long. That is actually why I\'m addicted to Guitar Hero. It is a lot of fun to play with friends and when you\'re alone, its just as much to play.
-
I know I\'ll pick up a Wii later on again. My relatives needed it more than I did so I sold to them.
Nintendo fan forever.
-
I don\'t see myself pickin\' up a wii at all....and no disrespect to nintendo as they were one of the pioneers of this video gaming thing....one of the greatest games of all time for me on NES was mike tyson\'s punchout and tecmo bowl...i was never really a big mario fan other than the original donkey kong.
The wii must be doin\' somethin\' right because my sister and her husband went to this little get together at their friends house and somebody over there was playin\' wii sports... i think they were playin\' bowling and golf,...and this one guy over there who has never played games in his life and wasn\'t into gaming at all stated that he wanted to get one, just from seein\' those two games...so the wii is capturing those casual gamers and those that have never wanted to play in tha first place...kinda funny since in the beginning i placed the wii at a distant third....i still could not believe you couldn\'t find one of those things at christmas time,..well that and the ds....nintendo is rackin\' in some serious cash flow....

Thats the thing most of those people will pick one up for wii sports. Beyond that they probably won\'t purchase anyother titles seeing they only bought the system because they enjoy how fun wii sports is. Thats great for the big N because they will continue to sell more systems this way.
I doubt a guy who bought the system cause he was at a party and enjoyed playing golf on the wii is going to go out and purchase Metroid.
-
And this is why a lot of 3rd party developers aren\'t ready to jump into the Wiigon yet. It\'s risky.
-
My wife and I are gonna buy a wii for my son in July for his birthday. He\'s only starting to get into video games, but what better system to get for a little kid than a wii? We got to play one at a New Year\'s Eve party and my wife wanted to get one the next day. I just like that i\'ll be able to play Mario Galaxy and any other gems that come along, I\'ll still mainly game on my PC anyway.
-
if you have Super Nintendo, how about let him play the basic 2-D games first like Super Mario All Stars that has Super Mario 2 and 3 in it, Super Mario World, Mega Man X, or Wanderer From Ys III...
but of course, the Wii should have some of those games downloadable I think...since I haven\'t been playing any new games lately, I really don\'t know what new games to suggest.
-
kids are spoiled by todays games - they wont want to play games like those if their friends has such and such console with better graphics
only time i see kids play the 2d route is on their handhelds
