I\'m thinking about importing a Jap or US PS3 as it will work out to be $100-$200 cheaper than buying one here (thanks Sony AU).
Anyway, I\'ve heard that all software is region free and that consoles aren\'t region protected either. So, that should mean that I\'ll be able to play AU PAL/NTSC games on a JAP/US PS3 and vice versa?
Also, does anyone know if the PS3 online network is different depending on what country your in? Like, if AU has its own online network/store etc, will I be able to access it if I have another regions PS3?
Any info would be greatly appreciated!

PlayStation 3 software is not region-coded, well it is but it isnt LOCKED to a specific region. The hardware itself has regions.
Yes you will be able to play US/JP/PAL games of PlayStation 3 software. You will NOT be able to play other region of PS2 software, that is still region locked. So if you get a US PS3 you will not be able to play PAL PS2-games.
Remember that Blu-Ray movies are also locked, not all of them but some are. Warner titles are region free, most Sony Pictures titles are free, Disney/Buena Vista are region free as long as it isnt NEW movies. FOX movies are almost always LOCKED.
DVD movie playback is also still region-locked.
Yes the stores are different. US store is where all the action is, but fear not its easy to register a US account so you will be able to download all the stuff our american enemies get. My Swedish VISA even works on the US-store so I have bought a few games over there. :)
I recommend setting up an account for each region, Europe/Australia (same content I think, though the Australian store has some music videos which we havent got on our EU-store yet), America and a Japanese-account. This way you will be able to access demos from all over the world.
-
Yeah. The PS Store does not depend on your PS3. It depends on the information you put while you register your account. But in order to be able to buy from a certain store you will have to find an adress of the specific country that the Store recognizes as valid
-
Thanks fastson for all that info, greatly appreciated.
^^^
Can I just enter a bogus account address? How do the online stores work? Games are getting to complicated these days, I just want to be able to download GT5 Prologue!
-
You can add whatever bogus adress you want. You will be able to play online and download demos and stuff normally but if you want to buy things from Store you will have to put an adress that corresponds to the specific country you assigned to your account and can be recognised as valid by the system.
-
^^
So if GT5 is only available for download from the Japanese store, I can still buy and download it in AU on an AU console? Sorry for my dumb questions.

Yep you can. As long as you provide a japanese address in your account that the system thinks is real. It doesnt matter where you actually live or from what region you got your console

I had a go at trying to get it to connect to the net and I kept getting up to the part where it was trying to get an IP number, where it would then time out and fail.
how am I supposed to get past that bit?
-
Have you already established an internet connection through your cpmputer before trying that? My friend had the same problem.

you mean did I try to hook my PS3 up to my PC modem using the ethernet cable?
-
Ok well I\'m probably just going to get an AU console, there are so pretty good post Christmas sales and they really aren\'t that much cheaper on ebay (I would have liked to get an 80 gig with Motorstorm, you can only get up to 60 gig here) but shipping was like $130US which defeated the purpose of importing) so a cheap 40 gig will have to do.

Well not exactly. I dont know how your broadband service works where you are but here, to connect to the internet, we enter our provider\'s site and establish a connection there. If we dont establish a connection the PS3 fails to get an IP adress at the "testing" for connectivity.

so how would I do that?
-
I have no idea since I dont know how your internet service works. Is it during the internet connection test that your PS3 fails?
Did you try to enter the internet browser regardless to see what happens??
Also are you trying to connect using an ethernet or a WiFi?
-
Ok well I got an AU 40 gig unit which came with Ridge Racer 7... Not a bad game, loads of fun and its quite pretty.
How do I connect to the various international stores? Do you just use internet browser and go to the respect addresses and download from there? So i\'ll need an account with each different store correct?
PS3\'s are heavy!

Create an account first. Create one for your country with all your details and check if Playstation Store supports your country. If yes, you can use your personal real adress and you will be able to buy things from it.
If not you will have to create an account with a country that the Playstation Store supports. Usually a US account is recommended since they are getting the stuff sooner than Europeans.
You wont have to visit many stores. One European, and one US will suffice. Europeans whose country is not supported usually use a UK and a US account.
To create a US account from which you can buy stuff use this adress:
Beverly Hills
LA
California
90210
After you create an account you will be able to enter the Playstation Store. The Playstation Store icon is located here

I go through all the steps, then it times out and fails at the stage where it tries to aquire an IP number
and yes, I am using an ethernet connection.
I tried the browser, and it said there was no connection.
-
Awesome, thanks for the link!
There is an AU store which is accessable from \'Playstation Store\' icon, its different to the UK and US ones, but I\'ll probably set up a US one anyway. I like that theres an AU one as download speeds are so fast.

Do you enter it manually or do you choose to find everything automatically? Usually the latter is the best option. If thats what you did I have run out of ideas.
The only thing I suspect in case both your PC and your PS3 are connected on the same router is that the PC may be interfering. Some kind of security I suspect. But I could be wrong.
I ve managed to connect many PS3\'s to the internet and they all worked fine. The only time I encounter a problem similar to yours it was when one friend of mine wanted to connect his PS3 through WiFi. We had to remove the WAP key security.
edit:
Try to see if there is any sscurity involved blocking yoru PS3 from accessing your router
Second option, try to find the IP from your PC and enter it manually on your PS3
-
I let it find it manually.
I didn\'t connect it to a router, I connected my PS3 directly to the modem, I removed the connection my PC had to make way for it.
-
I wish I could help. Cant think of anything.
Btw lets say you want to establish a connection with your computer what is the procedure? Do you enter any password code into a certain url to gain internet access?

nope, just connect the modem to the pc by ethernet or USB cable and go.
-
PS3 is directly connected to the modem?
You just switched from the PC (disconnected the ethernet-cable from the PC) to PS3 (stuck the same cable in the PS3?).
There might be a problem with the lease-time. Sometimes the ISP has XX amounts of lease time per IP-address. If I disconnect my modem from the router and directly connect it to my PC, it will take about 20-40 minutes for the lease time to expire and for my PC to get an IP-address. Same thing if I go the other way.
Disconnect the power from the modem and leave it for say 20 minutes, then connect it to the PS3 so PS3s MAC-address will be shown to the ISP instead of the PCs.

no, I disconnected the ethernet cable going to the PC from the back of the modem, then I replaced it at the back of the modem with the ethernet cable from my PS3 and connected that to my PS3
at no time did I disconnect my modem from the cable leading from the street.
-
I have found in the past that when I unhook something from the modem and hook up something else I usually have to power down the modem for a good 5 mins at least, then usually the new device will be able to go online. Try that and see if that helps (or leave it off for 20-30 mins to make sure it\'s not your problem)

Ok well same thing.. You need to power it down, have it unpowered for 20-30 minutes and try again (connected to the PS3). I think it has something to do with the lease-time, at least in my case.
Oh and get a router ffs! :D

I have a Linksys WRT54GL with the Tomato firmware, its been rock solid the 2 months I have owned it.
Btw, you sure the ethernet cable is not a crossed one? Or maybe that doesnt matter much these days?
