Title: What kind of phone do you have?

I\'ve went all my life without ever owning a cellphone, but now due to having a family and work, I need to break down a purchase one. I\'ll just be getting my wife\'s current plan, but I\'m curious as to what kind of phone everyone has..

You\'ll note all are so called smartphones. Right now, I\'m leaning towards the Shadow due to it\'s form factor.

Out of all the ones you posted w/tmobile I like the Shadow the best. The other ones belong in a briefcase, not a pocket.

Out of curiosity why do you need a smartphone?

Also upgraded my wifes phone to a Motorola w490.

Hard to believe, I\'m 25 and this is my first phone. I just don\'t care for them in general. Only picked this one up due to the fact I need it for the family.

With that said, I went ahead and added \'net access to the bill. That was another $20 friggin\' bucks. But, by god, I\'ll enjoy surfin\' the \'net at the doctors office and other stupid places. Not to mention support for PocketSNES.

She added me to her plan for an extra $5 a month, plus I got the data plan, which is $19 a month. So, really it isn\'t all that much. Also, with me activating a new "line", they knocked a $150 off the phone and it has a $50 dollar mail in rebate, so the phone itself was $100.

Post by: Samwise on January 01, 2008, 01:00:14 PM: I pay exactly $0,00 per month. I only pay for the minutes I use my phone (which isn\'t all that much really). And I\'m free to change it at will and as often as I like. But as I said before I\'m already happy with my current phone. :)

I hate it but the SQ for mp3s is actually better than my ipod lol. I pay $0 no matter how long I\'m on it because I\'m still on my family\'s plan and daddy pays. I\'m gonna milk this for as long as I can. :D

Well I did have this phone, until i had to send it back becasue the vibration function stopped working and it randomly turned its self off during phone calls. I regret getting this phone big time, a classic example of "Jack of all trades..."

Using my old K800i now, good phone, doesn\'t try to hard.

Post by: JBean on January 03, 2008, 09:39:34 AM: I have an ancient Sony Ericsson z500a. I was supposed to get a free upgrade early last year, but that went to my wife after she got mugged and her phone stolen. So her upgrade is coming up in March and it\'s coming to me.

Been a great phone though.. still has good battery life and I hardly drop any calls.

very happy with it, battery life seems v long... having a little trouble with the update service, something my computer not the phone is having trouble with...

Honestly I don\'t know. I think the US phone market is weird... Full of shitty phones and shitty services (with some good stuff here and there).

Regulations by the gov\'t (thanks to the phone companies here) and issues with DRM.

I\'m glad they aren\'t popular here to be honest. The one I have ruined the whole brand image to me. This is the second z520a I have and it crapped out on me today. Every time I get a text, the screen goes blank or breaks up. Even when its on it does that. I was trying to use the calculator and it broke up. I always have to shut it off and turn it back on. The camera went on it a few weeks ago. When I try to take a picture, it just goes back to the main screen. I\'ve had this phone for less than 6 months. The first one at least lasted a year before the screen went blank and AT&T just sent me a new one. I\'m going back to Nokia when I go to get a new phone.

Did my research and the phone gets amazing reviews everywhere I looked and has a ton of features that I will definitely use. My first foray into the slider-phone world. It also comes with earbuds, USB Data Cable & 512 MB Micro Memory Stick. Only paid $49 bucks after rebates & contract renewal with free 2nd day shipping. Time to retire the old Sony, had it for over 3 years and haven\'t had a single problem with it... but I need a new toy to play with.

Good phone just some simple annoyances. Its easy to hit the wrong button and I do it multiple times a day. Menus are easy to follow, takes great pictures (1.3 megapixel CCD camera) and the music playback is pretty good.

Also has internet sharing.

UTStarcomm VX6800 (primitive looking Verizon-branded device)
Samsung SCH-i760

It appears the Samsung is better, but it\'s rather bulky. I don\'t know if I like either of them.

And the Maddox rant is outdated, all those problems besides not having buttons and 3G have been fixed through software updates and jailbreaked programs. The sdk is going to change all this even more.

and sure the phone is cheaper, but at&t raised the data package costs so it will actually cost several hundred more than before after 2 years.

I really wanted to get an iphone, but now... bleh.. not worth it

I wasn\'t trying to be a smartass. I totally saw your point, I was just pointing out that I didn\'t go that route.

Yeah, I got mine off Ebay. I got the first gen model, it\'s in perfect condition. Still has warranty left with it and the seller gave me the box and everything. He even included the original receipt from the store he bought it from.

We had ADT installed this weekend and the installer had one of those Ericsson (sp?) walkman phones - it looked pretty cool, too bad it isn\'t available through Verizon.

A friend of mine had a chocolate and absolutely HATED it. Something about the buttons and being heat sensitive so they didn\'t work right. Maybe it was a lemon phone, but she hated it with a passion.

Yeah the 8550 version, which I have, solved most of the complaints from the previous 2 versions, sensitive buttons, no locking feature, etc. I have to say I am quite pleased with it. However, the newest one that just came out is a flip phone and personally I like the slider version.

My brother got a Nokia *something* right before I got my W880i. He has had major issues with it, first the screen went to shit, it looks like mist is covering the top part of the display. And the battery life is really horrible now, which is weird. Li-Ion should be pretty stable? Whenever I talk to him now he has to plug his phone into a socket.

Plus got tired of jailbreaking and Pwnage tooling for each update. Oh yeah and regular MMS (instead of SWIRLYMMS) ftw! How else can I send nude pictures to people who dont have mobile email?!

As for background processes slowing shit down. It does to a certain degree, but not nearly that bad. Look at other OS\'es and how they\'ve managed it. Really, there is no reason for Apple to have not implemented this.

I am excited about the Palm Pre though. Guess I miss the old days being cool with my Palm IIIx.

I want to dick around with Android, but multitouch is kind of a deal breaker for me, there have been hacks but Palm are the only ones doing it besides Apple.

I\'m not too big on multitasking on my cellphone -- Drives me nuts (Which is why I picked up a Dell Mini). My biggest gripe with the iPhone was the lack of Bluetooth tethering. Looks like we will be getting it this summer, once iPhone 3.0 is released. The fact that they are now going to allow the use of 3rd part accessories with applications also sounds promising.
