Title: Ces 2008
Post by: Paul2 on January 09, 2008, 12:15:35 PM

Lots of interesting products are announced.  First, Sony finally sell the world first OLED display in North America.  It measures 11" in size, 3mm deep, with a whooping contrast ratio of more than 1,000,000:1.  The cost is $2,500.  Sure is really expensive for something that is only 11" big.  But as time go by, they will make bigger screen sizes and prices should drop too.

How do you even walk straight after taking 11 inches?

Panasonic introduces a 150" plasma TV, possibly the world biggest TV. It has over 8.8 millions of pixels, more than 4 times the resolution of 1080p display.  I think this display is just perfect for shopping malls, casinos there they can put this on the wall or ceiling for display advertisements and whatnot.  Expect this tv to be selling over $500,000.  I wouldn\'t be surprised if they sell it at $1,000,000.

That\'s crazy. Even if I could afford it, there\'s no way it would get through the door.

Pioneer announced a 50" prototype plasma that they claimed absolute black level with an extreme contrast ratio that can\'t be measure.  so, it safe to say it have the same contrast ratio of 1,000,000+:1 just like OLED is.  That is not it yet, this 50" tv will have the thickness of no more than 9mm or about the same thickness of your apple IPOD.  Amazing.

As you can see from the photos comparison between Pioneer Kuro Plasma that have about 15,000:1 contrast ratio on the left and Pioneer Extreme Contrast Ratio on the right in the very darkened room.  everything is black from the curtains to the walls to show off the plasma black level and contrast ratio.

also, many LCDs and Plasmas are going ultra thin this year.  Some LCD is as thick as 1.5", while panasonic\'s 50" concept plasma is roughly 1" thick, and uses half the power of previous model plasma for the same brightness.

The OLED video was pretty cool. Even though its 11\'\' its still baby steps for what will be something that is going to be amazing. Won\'t buy it until prices come down and when they make bigger screens but its definitely something in the future. Though, that guy in the video looked like a real tool.

There\'s also this 82" 4K display. Very nice...

Now we just need some RED cams to shoot some amateur 4K porn.

EDIT: I just realized Paul2 already mentioned the 150" monster from Panasonic. So just forget about this tiny TV. :D

OLED is the future, no doubt about it. The technology is expensive because its development time. but the technology iteself (parts) is pretty cheap.

To manufature oleds cost fuck all.  I\'ve seen things where they say it\'ll end up on clothing and solders will use it on their arms for gps crap.. PLED i think they called it. interesting shit.
Title: Videoclip of Pioneer 50" Plasma Kuro Extreme Black
Post by: Paul2 on January 10, 2008, 02:51:20 AM

 Black is black.

Unfortunately, the quality of the video clip is mediocre at best, and the low-resolution makes it hard to distinguish the different between the current 50" Kuro Plasma and the prototype 50" Kuro Plasma Extreme Black.

but, you can still make it out if you have control room lighting or best turn the light off in your room.  If you still couldn\'t see it, crank up the monitor\'s brightness to see the different between the two set.

From the start, manufacturers like Panasonic and Pioneer only slightly improve the black level of their plasma year by year.  If I recalled correctly, there was a time of 2 years gab period where Pioneer didn\'t improve the black level of their plasma where it still stay the same as the previous model and was behind Panasonic in term of black level.

Until, 2007 Pioneer announced their Kuro Plasma which have black level 80% deeper than their previous model, and that kind of beat the black level of Panasonic plasma.

And now 2008, Pioneer surprises and amazes everyone that they managed to completely improve the black level to absolute black.  Which pretty much are way ahead of Panasonic in term of black level for a plasma display.  Not only that, but they also beat Panasonic 50" plasma prototype in term of screen thickness too.

So, now Pioneer is way ahead of Panasonic in that area.

The scientists, engineers, or whomever that built that plasma got a standing ovation from me.  A really big one.  They did what many thought were the impossible, but at this pace is incredible.:applause::applause::applause:

I\'ve wondered about metal gears animation and A.I. as well.... while the game no doubt looks fantastic, i can\'t help but think that the A.I. will act like it did in last gen...which really wasn\'t bad, but it was kinda robotic, just like some of snakes animation,..some of it just looks robotic...and i hope they improve his hand to hand combat,...that aspect has been heavily lacking in this series...

type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355">

Cliffy: gizmodo gets a TV B Gone remote and starts turning tv\'s off at the show.  Quite a douchebaggy thing to do (especially during presentations) but I chuckled anyway.

So like they took a standard image, stretched it out and curved it.  Big fucking deal.  Looks dumb as fuck.  (Oops, I already wrote that in a thread today)
