Well the pics are kinda misleading. It\'s quite a bit thicker in the middle.

"You fat! You fatty fat!"

Being the thinnest laptop ever doesn\'t do much for me. Especially considering how much they cut out of the thing.
I\'ll wait until they upgrade the macbook pro and go with that.
-
i\'ve had to haul a heavy ass dell to work everyday for the past month and my lower back is feeling it. wish my company would get me this... and hope more companies will compete :D

Isn\'t Dell coming out with a 3lb laptop?

I\'ve heard it all now.
A company, known for outstanding hardware, is "pretty crappy".
Next blind fanboy statement, please.
-
I\'d be afraid to pick that thing up with one hand.

Apple is known for its hardware design and functionality, not necessarily its quality. I\'m down to like 2 friends out of 30 who own a powerbook that hasn\'t had a harddrive/screen issue and EVERY one of them has had to replace their charger at least once.
-
If I\'m a friend of yours, Phil, make that 3 friends who hasn\'t had problems with his powerbook. Oh....and the 40 other Macs at the office that has no IT guys there to work on hardware issues (since it rarely happens). Then again, you\'re in college so shit happens when yer constantly lugging them around.
-
Fair enough, but there are more people in situations like mine than yours. It\'ll be curious to see what kind of carrying cases they develop. It would be amusing to see that the amount of padding required to keep it safe made the case larger than say, a typical macbook pro case.
I really, REALLY hope they don\'t get rid of the pro line in favor of the air. In my opinion the thickness of the pro is absolutely perfect and as much as people think optical drives are obsolete, I don\'t want to have to deal with an external drive. I use my DVD drive way too much to leave it at home and anything external is going to be more vulnerable to breaking than its internal counterpart. That and I like to have a spare battery to swap out if I\'m in a 4 hour lecture and I don\'t have access to an outlet.

Dont confuse build quality with outstanding performance.
You\'ve never heard of the huge amounts of iPods that are failing, or the problems with Mac notebooks, shoddy support etc?
Dont let the iGloss blind you. :)

I\'ve also heard of disc read errors on the PS2. I\'ve first hand experienced a massive bad batch of SONY RPTV\'s that had to come back. I\'ve also worked on personally iPods that failed. Getting the point? Every company has a track record for faults, but Apple\'s typically known for build quality, design quality and performance.
-
They are also known for charging $3k for a computer and slapping in a $65 video card. If you want bleeding edge, scalable performance you\'d have to turn to PC.
Not saying Mac is a bad a product, just pointing out they aren\'t the perfect machines that many tout them to be. Bose is also "known" by the general public for making top-notch audio components but that doesn\'t mean it\'s true.
-
Bah THX, Apples workstations might be expensive, but they sure as hell are bleeding edge.

but I don\'t think Apple is popular with their Mac computers and Macbook compares to PC and laptop. Look how many companies built their laptops and PCs with PC parts and Windows OS rather than Apple architecture, and OS. Only Apple is unique with their pc.
Even many softwares support Windows OS more than Apple OS...Maybe PC is more flexible than Apple or something for many other companies to support PC.
I think Apple made some products that were awesome and were also use in PC and laptop like Firewire. Even Apple Ipods are way more popular than other portable audio player since I think they are the first company to introduce hard drive handheld mp3 player. other companies try to follow suit but it was too late. I guess that is a good comeback for Apple since they lost their popularity of McIntosh to Microsoft Windows PC...

Yes, PS2 had a big problem with DRE, no denying that. I was never affected but loads of others were.
Though I stand by what I said, the failure rate for Apple-products seem pretty high at least with the first revision. If you search the interwebs you\'ll see I\'m not the only one who have come to this conclusion. Its funny when even the most die-hard Apple fanboys say they\'ll wait for the next revision of a product.
Don\'t let being a retard blind you.
Shut the fuck up you backwards-american. ;)

He is Canadian.

^^^ Even worse ;)
I think the first generation of any technology fails to some extent, at least a lot of the time. I got a first batch PS2 and it finally completely died on me over the summer after years of DRE, opening it for repairs, adjusting voltage, etc. My cell phone is complete crap. Though that is its model in general (and a Sony Ericson product) that has problems with everyone.
Anyone remember the Motorola Razr when that was first released? Heaven forbid if you dropped that. I knew kids in high school when they first got it they had to get it replaced soon after because they dropped it and it would break.
The iPhone had issues when it was first released. I\'ve heard of iPods going dead the first generation and having problems holding a charge. My roommate has an old iPod and he goes out for a run after he\'s charged it and already would have to charge it back up. He can\'t replace the battery (which I feel is their design flaw. that\'s why I like my Zen. Something goes wrong I can replace the battery).
The XBox360 is a given for launch faults. How much did Microsoft lose in replacing consoles? Seems like a never ending trend with new technologies which is why I wait for companies to fix faults before I invest in their product :)
-
Compared to Dell and HP, Apple\'s products are rock steady.
-

My only gripe with Macs is you drop several grand on a top-of-the-line computer and 1-2 years later you have no option of upgrading your motherboard and/or CPU(s). You\'d have to purchase a whole new one to enjoy the latest speed advancements.
I like being able to keep my power supply, case, internal drives, etc... and just upgrade certain segments to keep my system up to date. I\'m the minority though (brown), few people know or care enough to open their computers and get nerdy.
That said I love Macs\' designs and their software, and especially the fact that there\'s competition, I just have issues with their closed architecture when it comes to hardware.
-
^^^
Which is why I\'ll never buy a Mac desktop. Everyone is more or less in the same boat with laptops, they simply aren\'t meant to be upgraded.
-
After several years of upgrading PCs, I finallys stopped at the 2gHz speed. I realized that I don\'t need to upgrade my PC so it can play the latest games. I\'ve got a console. I\'m not a PC gamer so why bother upgrading when mostly what I do with my PC is surf and read email.
The Mac Pro, the software I bought for it will last me forever. FCStudio 2 has everything I need. I have all the Adobe packages. I\'m set for the next 5 years at the very least.

I would love to have the air book as an extra, NOT as a replacement to my 15" Dell M65 laptop workstation ; within 1,5 years of travelling/working from Vancouver to Houston to Euroland, back to Houston and back to Euroland again, the sturdy Dell has not failed me. The certified Quadro card handles my Maya work just fine and I doubt the air\'s integrated gpu will be able to handle that many poly\'s.
For some photo editing and even some light video work the air book would be cool though.

Does anybody else believe that computer speed will plateau one day? I already feel my computer is more powerful than anything I will use it for. Sometimes gets laggy and wish I had a bit more RAM or CPU speed but I do some maintenance and it works like the day I bought it.
-
i don\'t know. i don\'t know how much more powerful can computer get in just the same size of how the computer has always been and when will they reach the limit either...same could be said about videogames console too. The consoles get a lot powerful after each generation. But they are still the same size compare to previous generations.
Anybody here knows? Soulgrind?

If you mean a physical plateau, then yes, with the current architecture. But then they\'ll invent something new; they always do. But if you meant if we actually need more speed than currently available, then hell yes (well not if you just want to check your email from time to time). But for high definition video editing and 3D work and so on, you can utilize as fast a computer as possible.

Good point. And I\'m probably going to be seeing this when I get into the tv/film industry after college. When I get out into the world, I\'m going to be working with mostly HD so its probably a good thing the next computer I get is crazy fast like clips and a hot shorty ;)

O Lol. Try 3D rendering @ HD settings.
Fast can never be fast enough.
