Title: Cloverfield (spoilers)
Post by: ##RaCeR## on January 19, 2008, 05:05:39 AM
Was freaking sweet, script was dodge at time and some of the acting was so-so, but it was such an ambitous movie. I thought the ending kinda sucked, but I really hope they have a sequel/prequel, from another persons point of view.
I\'m sure they weren\'t the only ones with a handycam taping the event.

So let me get this straight, the acting was mediocre, the plot had issues, the ending sucked, but it was still awesome? lowered standards much?

I know racer sounds retarded, but he described pretty well. The movie was greater than the sum of it\'s parts. I loved it.

thanks theomen
But yeah, the greater scope of the movie greatly outweighed its tiny flaws. Decisions were made, both by characters and by the film makers that will probably piss some people off, but it doesn\'t change what it was trying to achieve.

You\'ve been here how long? ;) I never read movie threads unless I\'ve seen them first. Learned my lesson several times before though :D
I really liked it a lot. Another what if movie like I Am Legend, though I think they pulled off the antagonist 3x better.
Just like everyone else I /hated/ the end. Nothing was answered. No final resolution. No explanation of "Cloverfield." Just death; the easiest way out of explaining the plot. A very shallow ending, and even though it felt real it wasn\'t fulfilling.
Here\'s hoping the sequel will be long enough to explain everything in the first one and have enough action to satisfy my American lust for BLOOD.

I doubt there will be a sequel.
JJ is crazy like that.

They should have called it "Floorfield" you spend half the time looking at floors and walls.
Spoilers coming up
There were indeed a lot of unanswered questions. WTF happened with the goth chick. Did she hatch one of the little minions or did she just pop?
Also, why didn\'t the dood holding the camera bother to tell them about the little creatures. He says if i remember right "There are nasty things that way" and thats about it. wtf!?
About Jason\'s (the brother that died on the bridge) girlfriend, did she die in the helicopter. You see one crash, but have no idea if it was hers.
I guess the movie was meant to have all these unanswered questions, otherwise it wouldn\'t be like a real normal everyday joe blow capturing it.
but still annoying.
I hated certain parts, like the chopper at the end not bothering to fly higher then it did, or the fact it flew in parallel to the monster, but i\'m rambling.

Apparently at the very end of the film where it cuts back to their trip to Conney Island, in the background behind the ferris wheel you can see something fall from the sky and land in the sea behind them. I for one completely missed this, I guess it\'s implying the thing was alien and had been here only a month or so.

hmm didn\'t notice that. sounds cool but still doesn\'t tie things up, more like a little detail.
And the more I think about the end the angier I get. $10.50 for that!? :hissyfit:

I really liked it, and really liked that it didn\'t even try to answer a lot of that. I missed the thing dropping from the sky at the end as well. Also, if you stay for the end of the credits, you hear some walkie talkie static, which is apparently saying "It\'s still alive."

I didnt see the thing fly into the water, and I never stay for the credits.
Oh well.
I for one liked the way it was filmed. It was like if YOU actually had a video camera during all of this, would you be so dedicated to stand there and get a "good shot"?
Hell nahs.... Youd be running around like an asshole... Like Hud did.
Again... Loved it.

I followed the whole marketing of this movie pretty closely... Cause I was stoked for it....
I found this online, and it really is the best explanation I\'ve read about anything.
Again, take it or leave it cause its just someone trying to throw all the youtube and myspace marketing they did for the movie together.
At the credits ending of Cloverfield, *spoilers* the audio from the video cam says, "Help us!". But when played backwards, it says, "It\'s still alive!" This happens after the end credits of Cloverfield. Assuming the speaker was Rob, he suggests Cloverfield (the monster) is still alive. This also suggests a sequel for Cloverfield 2! *Spoilers*
The Japanese oil company TAGRUATO drops a satellite (Chimpanz III) into the ocean as part of viral marketing (shown at the end of the movie when Rob and Beth were on the ferris wheel). TAGRUATO works with SLUSHO (a slush company), as the main ingredient for SLUSHO is found at the satellite dropzone (deep ocean). While searching for satellite and ingredients, they woke Cloverfield (the monster).
People who were at the party in the beginning of the movie, were seen wearing SLUSHO shirts. Rob apparently was going to be the Vice President of TAGRUATO in Japan.
The main ingredient of Slusho apparently turns a tiny fish into a HUGE whale, which explains the size of Cloverfield. *Update* The main ingredient is a deep sea nectar.
For animals/fishes/insects to survive in the deepest ocean (very high boiling temperature), they naturally have very high heat resistance. This explains how Cloverfield is able to withstand numerous bombs and attacks from the army.
Cloverfield refers to the field formerly known as Central Park. Clovers are usually prone to grow at places after bombing. Thus the term "Clover" and "field" referring to park.

I haven\'t seen it, but I for one apperciate the fact they don\'t answer everything out right and small stuff, like the name of the film are hints to a bigger picture.

So a magical ingredient can turn a deep sea fishy into a land walking, roaring mammal that sprouts spiders that are extremely agile on land?
Either way, getting major plot details to a movie on the net through some viral marketing scheme is retarded. I hope this wasn\'t their plan.

The spiders were parasites attacking the monster. The monster would rub up against the buildings to get them off and the little critters would then attack humans.
Hud was annoying as hell when they were in the tunnel. "Hey, what if we saw a homeless guy on fire?"
This would be a perfect movie for someone to copy "Wander" and climb the colossus and stab it in the weak spot.

I thought the movie was great. The feel of it was different than other movies. Thought it was well done. It was disturbing, though. The girl behind me was like having a panic attack or some shit when it ended.

Unless you got a massive screen at home I\'d really recommend you seeing it in the cinema. Its so disorientating watching it on the big screen, and really adds an extra layer to the \'ride\' so to speak.
I think it would lose alot of impact on a smaller screen.

Post by: GmanJoe on January 24, 2008, 05:29:22 AM
Um....it\'s less disorienting when the screen is small. I knew this would be Blair Witch camera style so I sat all the in the back to avoid the motion sickness. If you\'re sensitive, get some Dramamine.

saw it today. Thought it was really good, but i stayed pessimistic about it since nothing could live up to its hype so that helped.
The comedic guy, while got a few chuckes, still kind of ruined a bunch of moods several times.
plus i get what they were doing with the \'leaving us in the dark\' on what was going on, but i do hope theres a second one that kind of explains where it came from. The best explanation i\'ve heard for why it was destroying everything was that it\'s a baby whatever-it-is and got scared, which is actually a cool idea.
just wish i wasnt too lazy to read into all the viral, background story stuff. I guess the thing that fell into the ocean at the end (i didnt see it), couldve been some sattelite from some company that woke up the monster. I REALLY doubt the thing is an alien

I saw this film on saturday. It was mildly entertaining, but certainly not "good" or a classic of any sort.
The most annoying thing about it was the actors! I knew from the trailer it was going to be another big studio picture featuring "beautiful young people in trouble" but it still annoys the hell out of me. They would never dream of casting actors who look like normal people, and (god forbid) might have some acting ability. Forget about casting anyone who\'s over 23 years old. Well at least they can save some money when they hire these no-name dipshits.
I\'m glad there was no explanation for where the monster came from. Think about this, THX: If they DID provide an explanation, could it possible be anything you\'d want to hear? Or would it be simply be some incredibly idiotic bullshit that makes no sense? I\'m glad they put LESS idiotic bullshit in this film, and just left the explanations out. Perhaps this was supposed to give you something to think about after the film is over, but not for me. I\'m already well on my way to forgetting this movie ever existed.

I\'m also upset about the shallow characters (they do not exist), lack of development, shakey camera and stupid rescue me cliche.....but the four legged sea monster eating up a whole city was technically accurate. No complaints there. ;)
/sarcasm

Rented this tonight. Thought it was going to be complete shit but i\'m suprised how much I liked it.
I like mysteries and the unexplained aspects of the film. Now that i\'ve seen the movie i\'ve spent the night going through all the viral advertising and its actually interesting stuff. Love the ad campaign for this movie and all the speculation still surrounding it.
Will say tho I thought the monster itself looked stupid. I hope there is a sequel, even with the mediocre acting i\'m still very curious about what happened to Rob, Beth & Lilly.
and I didn\'t find the "Help us" and "Its still alive" coming through the radio or whatever after the end credits annoying.
http://tidowave.com/ and http://tagruato.jp/ were also pretty cool.
Oh and it sucked when Marlena got bit and exploded behind the curtain. She was my favourite one of the \'sexy teens\'.

Special Features are

I actually didn\'t see the thing (I think its a sattelite) fall into the water at the very end. I read about it on the net afterwards and went back and you can clearly see (if your paying attention to that area of the screen) something fall from the sky and land into the ocean.

Found a cool little easter egg on the scene selection of the DVD but the fucking disc freezes when I get to it.
It looks like an army video file with 8 different codes (linking to videos) But I could only get 3 to work. One of them was titled \'Org. Of Intrest\' and it took you to the homepage of the Slusho energy drink company (the drink with the deep sea nectar in it).
One of them was a video titled \'Alpha Encounter - UNCONFIRMED\' which was a news report style video about a sinking oilrig.
There was also another one called \'Person of interest\' which took me to a screen of 11 videos. Webcam videos made by some woman talking to a boyfriend who just moved away. She has a blue gift wrapped box that he told her not to open until December 9th. As the video journals progress you find out that he hasn\'t contacted her in over a month and on December 9th she opens the box and finds a Slusho baseball cap, something else wrapped in plastic with a note saying \'Primary evidence. Freeze ASAP. Jamie do not eat this.\' and a tape recorder.
The tape recorded message which is months old at this point, is from the boyfriend who is freaking. He says if your hearing this message before we\'ve spoken then that means i\'ve been captured by a company named Tagruato. He tells her not to go to the authorities and to wait for someone named Randy to contact her.
She assumes this is an elaborate way from him to dump her and stops the message early, cusses the boyfriend out, and turns off the webcam. The last webcam journal entry is the girl talking a mile a minute, like shes on speed or meth or crack or all 3. Talking about how shes over the dude and ready to move on with her life and is going out tonight to fuck some new guy.
So I assume she either ate what was in the bag (who eats something random wrapped in plastic sitting in a gift box for months ?) Or she recently had one of the Slusho energy drinks I assume is the more likely answer.
What does all this mean?
Fuck if I know.

get The Orphanage if you don\'t mind spanish sub-titles.
As for Cloverfield. Well I liked it, but I thought it was going to be a tremendous piece of shit. I maybe had my expectations so low that when I realized I wasn\'t dissapointed with it at all that I probably overlooked things that other people are griping about.
I guess its one of those you either like it or you don\'t but I expected the level of corniness and cheese to be very high. I was pleased it took itself much more seriously than I expected.

I just saw this not too long ago myself. I didn\'t see any of the hype for it, but I was told it was like Blair Witch.
I dig what they were trying to do, a cross between Blair Witch and Godzilla. But I think I would\'ve enjoyed it more if it was filmed like a regular movie. I wasn\'t any more engaged in the film because of how it was shot, instead I just kept getting taken totally out of it by the incredibly shakey (OMGZ ITz r3aL!!1_) camera.
