Title: Anyone playing LOTR: Online?
Post by: Samwise on January 24, 2008, 03:44:49 AM
I was wondering since I\'m a bit of a Tolkien fan (I guess you wouldn\'t know looking at my username ;)), if anyone is playing Lord of the Rings: Online? And if so, how is it (perhaps compared to WoW)?

oh.  I didn\'t know you have to be str8 to like that movie.  That means, if I don\'t like it, I am gay.  So Samwise likes it, he must be straight.   :p

I played it for a little while...

I liked it, but eventually just went back to Warcraft.

I\'m anxiously awaiting Age of Conan.

I think I\'ll just download the 7 day trial in a week or so, when I have more time to play. But from what I\'ve heard so far it sounds pretty good. I gues being a Tolkien fan doesn\'t hurt either. :)

I played it for a few months. Its fun to start but it really slows down.

Theres an obscene amount of quests and the ones that give good rewards are all group quests of course. Normally that would sound awesome, but the way the game is set up is you get practically 0 reward for helping other people. So its a bitch to find people to help with your group quests...and you will have a lot of group quests. This becomes a major problem around the late 20\'s and almost through all the 30\'s.

Graphics wise it kicks wows ass and it does a lot of nice things, but spending 3-4 hours a night trying to find a group was enough to make me quit. Twice.

Also PvP is almost non existent. It does however do an excellent job of presenting Tolkien\'s story via interactive cut scenes and what not.

Long story short, the game forces you to group with other people almost constantly but does a poor job of giving people incentive for helping you because there are so many quests hardly anyone is ever on the same one. You end up making deals with people, you help me do my quest and i\'ll help you. I never did get to the max level of 50 so I can\'t comment on what the end game is like.

I was anxiously waiting Conan but that got delayed again so now i\'m just sticking it out until Warhammer shows up.

Hmm, it\'s sounds pretty crappy about the whole group thing. I don\'t care for PvP though.

Try the trial out. I honestly didn\'t start disliking it until level 30, up until then I thought it was great. Also the game quite excels at keeping true to Tolkiens universe, the main story quest is great. So if your a big fan of Tolkiens you can probably find it more enjoyable than I did. Plus i\'m a PvP which was a big reason for me not liking it.

I just reactivated my account and am having fun.  I am in my mid 30\'s and Joker is right about group quests.  However, I have had no problem finding people to group with.  There are a good amount of quests that are not group oriented.  It offers a lot that WoW doesn\'t in terms of deeds and such.  The graphics are pretty nice as well.

I still have my WoW account, but am finding it harder and harder to play since I have been playing it since release.  I basically use WoW now to PvP and LOTRO to quest and actually enjoy it (unlike WoW).
