Title: Kitchen Project
Post by: videoholic on February 05, 2008, 09:45:37 AM
I put a tv up a few months ago and last month I finally got a chance to tile it in.  Last week I built a maple frame around it with a compound miter.  The frame is about 5 inches in front of the tile and about even with the front of the screen.  I have rope light behind the frame shining on the tile making it look pretty sweet.

I\'m certainly no tile guy and I think what you see here is my first and last tile job.  It was fun, but not my job.

Okay...uh....why up there again?

Cause it\'s right in front of the bar.

That\'s a good enough reason.

Cool concept and good work.  Don\'t exactly agree with the aesthetics but you don\'t seem like a metrosexual to me

Well here is some of the kitchen as well.  I don\'t have a shot of the bar area.

I would have made the flat screen into a picture frame....polished aluminum frame. No tiles around the TV.

Yeah, nothing like polished aluminum surrounding your tv.  heh.  That\'s exactly why you suck.

Tiles match the rest of the kitchen goofball.
And why would I put Aluminum in a kitchen that is all stainless?

Sorry man this looks wonky to me.  Looks like it was made by a guy who wanted to do a side project over the weekend vs. an interior designer.  I don\'t think I\'d ever see that in a new house for sale.  Like I said it\'s good job functionality-wise but I\'d try out something different for the wall

Gonna agree with these guys. It looks terrible.  A friend of mine done what you done, put his TV in the wall, but he made it so it blended it. It just looks like a normal picture frame - took a lot less time and money.. The tile around it, well, it just makes it look cheap.

Post by: Unicron! on February 05, 2008, 08:58:49 PM
Just asking. The frame is shaped to fit exactly the specific TV. Isnt this slightly inconvenient in case you decide to put another TV there?

Is the frame easily removable btw or is it just stuck on the wall?

Not that bad though. You did a great job considering that this is your first (and last) attempt.

I think something darker would fit better though. the tiles, stainless steel and the TV screen dont match there. But then again perhaps the spot you have your TV isnt very convenient to make it look as perfect as some are expecting.

You people are retarded. The tile is on the wall behind the TV and it matches the rest of the kitchen. Anything else would have looked completely retarded and out of place.

The Maple frame matches the cabinetry of the kitchen.

I love you guys even though you have no taste what so ever.

Post by: Phil on February 06, 2008, 06:04:32 AM
I have to agree with everyone else, the tile may match with the kitchen, but it doesn\'t match whats directly bordering it.  It just looks tacky.  Take a context shot if you really think it looks ok with the rest of the kitchen, but I really doubt it\'ll look any better in context.

I applaud anyone that does little home improvement projects, but this just doesn\'t match my taste. (design major; not retarded; know what i\'m talking about)

IT\'S NOT EVEN LEVELED!

Maybe it the angle of the camera...but from the top tiles, the tv\'s top edge doesn\'t seem to be leveled, so that means....the whole thing isn\'t leveled. Then again...it could be the camera angle.

A+ for execution.
Fail on aesthetic design.

Edit - Is that popcorn ceiling? dude.....why? This ain\'t the 70\'s and 80\'s anymore.

Yeah, it\'s an optical illusion.  I had that screen up and down 10 freaking times to get it level.  it\'s dead on

popcorn ceiling?  I remember growing up I had a bunk bed and my dad told me if I pick the ceiling the roof will fall apart.  lol

No it\'s not popcorn.  It\'s called knockdown.  but thank you for trying.
:gfight:

Bar stools are just ones I\'m borrowing from my dad for a party this weekend.  Still looking for something that matches are kitchen table.

No, it\'s not cut for the tv.  it\'s cut to the size of the whole in proportion.  I can\'t imagine having a bigger tv there.  I mean it\'s just a kitchen/bar.  Not like we really watch a lot of tv there.  We have quite a few parties and cards and stuff so we spend a lot of time at the bar.

Upstairs is where I will have my larger gear.  Should start work on that soon.  I\'ll be sure to give everyone updates so I can get full forum approval at every stage.  :thumb:

Polished Aluminum (or Nickel) FRAME. Jeez. your ~are~ bad with designs.

Edit - the flat screen on that wall would have sufficed, BTW. Or like what Raz\'s friend did: make the screen flush to the wall and frame it (like what I\'ve been trying to tell you).

Obviously the wall it will be in will be ventilated for the TV. Do I need to tell you this? And by Aluminum, I meant to say BRUSHED Aluminum or Nickel. At least it would have matched your appliances.

And I gotta agree with him. I\'ve seen a project like this before and with it flush against the wall and made to look like a picture frame, it looked perfect. I understand what you was goin for Vid, but honestly, it looks out of place and cheap. In fact, with tile around it, it makes me think that you may as well be watching the TV on the floor.

a 10\' x 5 and a half foot wall of stainless steel....  lol..  that would be, um...  yeah..  real nice..  heh

And just so you know.  The frame is flush with the tv.  This is so you don\'t see behind the tv.  The whole point of doing it.  I would never in a billion years mount a tv on a wall so that everyone can look at the sides and enjoy the cabling.  But, the pain in the ass of ventilating an inwall tv is retarded to say the least for a simple bar tv above a refrigerator.

and as far as making the frame match the proportion of the tv.  That would make the compound miter look horrible.  It would have added about 3 inches to the two sides and just be dumb as fuck.

just acknowledge the fact that it is generally considered to look like shit and get it over with. You like it, that\'s fine. You\'re the one that has to live with it. Just don\'t try to make others look stupid for pointing it out. It only makes you look worse...

Yeah, I\'m not sure what the confusion is.

Hell, what I suggested was just make the whole thing look like a simple picture frame, without tile and it\'d still look better. There is no reason to have a bunch of tile around it to make it stand out and look like it came from some weird 70\'s film.
