Here are a couple pics of the newest addition to my guitar family. This is a Fender American Deluxe Telecaster in "Aged Cherry Sunburst."
I decided on this model and finish a couple months ago, but it took me a while to find an "above average" example in a guitar store. I finally made the purchase on Saturday, and I\'m pretty pleased. There was a little buzzing in the low E and A strings, but after I replaced the flimsy .009 string set with a heaver .011 set, the buzzing disappeared. I\'m planning to check the intonation and fine tune the action this week when I have a spare hour or two.

Verso

Awesome.
I love telecasters.
I\'m already planning my next guitar, and I\'m thinking Firebird.

Is the reverse headstock normal on a Firebird? I\'m thinking not, but I could be wrong. Firebirds are cool because they\'re less common. It seems most of them are bursts, so a solid color like this one would be even more unusual.
I guess I\'m not a big fan of Gibson products, but I will own a genuine Les Paul and a Flying V some day. I want to round out my collection. :)
-
reverse are the norm...non-reverse were custom back in the day....
I would buy one if I were gonna get another guitar.
-
Flying v\'s just went down in price. I came really close to buying one.
All I do is record songs in my litle home studio though and sitting down playing a V seems really uncomfortable.
-
I bought an American Deluxe Strat a few months back, truly an excellent guitar. Thinking about getting a 7 string for my next purchase, just to have on in my collection.
-
I\'ve never understood the appeal of a 7 string guitar. It seems to me that the neck either becomes too wide to be comfortable, or the strings become too closely spaced. For me that would be too high a price to pay for getting one lower string.
I like to wrap my thumb around the low E string on occasion.

You obviously don\'t play hardcore thrash metal.

Whaaaattttt???? I\'m all about hardcore.
Can\'t you tell by the guitar I bought? :p
-
Yeah dude, nothing says death metal like a telecaster!
Ha!
-
Luke, it could be worse. He could be trying to play death metal with this

I want this one http://www.guitarcenter.com/Schecter-Damien-FR-Electric-Guitar-513103-i1147996.gc ..but i can never go through with buying it

Funny thing is, there are metal players that play telecasters. Devin Townsend for example, John5 has his signature tele aswell.
Most 7 string bands don\'t need them, just for show really. But stuff like Meshuggah really shows what a 7 string can do.

i suprisingly never got into meshuggah..but im going to pick up their new album. been sounding awesome (they have some of it on their myspace), and i havnt bought anything new since lamb of god...which wasnt as good as i was hoping.
-
Meshuggah is one of the greatest metal bands ever. Period.
I have an Epiphone Explorer tuned to C just to play metal on, then a strat for everything else. I almost bought a 7-string Jackson before deciding on the Explorer.
nO-One I had no idea Devin Townsend played a Telecaster.... That just seems weird to me.

I have a Schecter Gryphon. Its like the Damien\'s brptjer. Mine plays really well. I\'d like to switch out the pickups to Seymour Duncans. The pickups I have are Seymour Designed. They aren\'t bad but aren\'t great either. Thing I like most about my Gryphon is the coil tap. I can split my humbuckers into single coils. I\'m not sure if my tone knob works. To change the tone I have to go all the way to either side, which I don\'t think is right.

it\'s a Telecaster with EMG\'s but a Tele non the less. He uses it more for DTB than for the SYL stuff.

If that\'s true, it\'s a perfect argument for me to use when I tell people that I don\'t like metal.
Thanks for that.

its a different kind of metal, and an opinion. The off-beat stuff is not liked by the majority of people. I personally love gojira, not that they use that same technique anywhere near as much as meshuggah. while meshuggah i have a hard time listening to more than 6 of their songs at a time. But friends of mine that love meshuggah would say the same thing as luke
-
Meshuggah aint for everyone....
If you like that style of metal though, they are the top of the heap as far as I\'m concerned.

I\'m looking for some new pickups for my Explorer. He says he\'s uing 81\'s but does he mean 81\'85\'s?
And man, he can sweep like a motherfucker.... I wish I could do that.

That he can, and the thing he plays in the Wrong Side demo... he actually sings the chorus while playing that... mad skills there.
I think he uses two 81\'s and rarely the neck pickup. For the SYL stuff í uses Horizon based ESP\'s, basically the same stuff Stephen Carpenter from Deftones uses, so he doesn\'t have a neck pickup in those but two pickups very close together.
-
I\'ve never heard of someone just using two 81\'s. Is that common?
Remember I\'m a drummer. This is all new to me.
-
Two 81\'s are actually more common than 81 85 combo, although that one makes more sense since the 85\'s cleans are much better than the 81 can ever hope to achieve. My ESP Eclipse came with two 81\'s, I almost never use the neck pup though.
Also an 81 60 combo is pretty common, 81\'s pretty much are bridge only.
-
Gotcha.
I was gonna buy those Zakk Wylde EMG\'s.... But I\'m still researching.
-
the Zakk Wylde\'s are basically a 81 89 set IIRC.
I\'d also consider Seymore Duncan Blackouts, they\'re hot but are supposed to sound a tad better than the EMG\'s.
-
You think putting those in an Explorer is something I can do myself?
-
well EMG\'s are active, so you\'ll have to do some wiring for the batteries and such. It\'s more complex than putting in passives.
-
I\'ll take that as a no.
-
I was looking at the EMG website the other day (trying to figure out what you two were talking about :)) and I noticed that the manufacturer includes a bunch of wiring, switches, and pots with the pickup. So I guess they give you everything you need to install it. Perhaps some soldering skills would be required?
I\'m not sure if I would like the idea of switching my pots, but I guess if you\'re going to make such a big change (passive to active), might as well go all the way.
-
I need to get the action and shit adjusted anyways and I dont have the patience to do it myself.
-
soldering skills are required, however going from EMG to another EMG is supposedly easy as hell, just pull it out and put another one in basically.
-
I dont really feel like making a whole new thread, but i just saw this show Talking Metal on fuse..i never go that high in channels so it kind of sucks i didnt know the show existed..
anyway, they showed this band Warbringer that sounded pretty awesome. First cd came out this february, but they sound like thrash from the late 80\'s..not comparing them to metallica but considering the lack of old school sounding thrash, they stood out to me
