Feb. 25 (Bloomberg) -- Microsoft Corp. plans to stop making HD DVD players and cut the price of existing supplies by more than half after the leading promoter of the high-definition video format conceded defeat to Sony Corp.\'s Blu-ray last week.
``From tomorrow, we will cut the price to $49,\'\' said Grace Chou, a Taipei-based spokeswoman for the Redmond, Washington- based company. Microsoft\'s Xbox 360 game console includes a standard DVD player, and customers can buy an HD DVD machine to use with the console at $119.99 through retailers such as Amazon.com.
Microsoft, the world\'s largest software maker, was part of a group led by Toshiba Corp. supporting the HD DVD standard. Tokyo- based Toshiba on Feb. 19 abandoned its HD DVD business after the Blu-ray technology received support from major Hollywood studios including Warner Bros. Entertainment in the media industry\'s largest format war since VHS beat Betamax in the 1980s.
``It will not have a big impact because we don\'t sell HD DVD with the Xbox 360, only as an add on,\'\' Chou said.
The Xbox 360 trailed Sony\'s PlayStation 3 and Nintendo Co.\'s Wii in U.S. game-console sales in January, according to researcher NPD Group Inc.
Sony includes a Blu-ray disc player in its PlayStation 3 game console.

microsoft are such idiots and are going to be in financial ruin because of this....
dumb microsoft for investing their life savings...
/sarcasm
just another page to turn. companies can usually plan on something failing and not getting hurt by it much..even toshiba will be perfectly fine and they put way more money into it.
anyway, 150 is still way too damn expensive for something thats going to die off. sounds like a trivial 30 bucks, but i think 120 would be a fair price
-
the link said Microsoft is going to cut the price tag of their external hd-dvd player from $130 to $50.
-
looked like a typo to me
-
no, its not. even Best buy (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8132095&type=product&id=1158321865239) sell it at $49.99.

Ps3 Wins The Console Wars Yaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy
-
not sure if the PS3 will ever pass the wii without a serious price drop, but the 360 will find itself in 3rd place before long.

no man its over
ship the victory
this hddvd thing has huge implications for ps3 dominating the 360 and even the wii
-
no no wii wins since smash brothers came out and showed how awesomely to take advantage of the waggle and wiggle!
and come on wii will never stop being the top choice with its great chain of third party titles with their vast variety and selection!
-

Im expecting it not to be until a couple years for that to happen and games start actually using what the ps3 is supposedly able to do..not even sure what that means anymore.
Blu-ray winning is not going to do anything big to the ps3 sales..most people buy ps3\'s to play games, and blu ray is just icing on the cake..and people into only movies arent going to buy a gaming console for their blu ray player.
It\'s going to be up to exclusives and them getting off the track of developers making games for the 360 since its easier to program for (MS is way more developer friendly than sony)..which should start happenening when developers make their second set of games..like lucasarts

i\'d say Blu-Ray wining the war caused PS3 to beat 360 in Jan sales and perhaps Feb too.
-
i\'d say Blu-Ray wining the war caused PS3 to beat 360 in Jan sales and perhaps Feb too.
Id say its because the people who wanted a 360 already bought one. It\'d be natural for a console with a later release date to have better sales in later months. plus the ps3\'s been slated for a while to have a big 08 game wise
-
Compare the game attach ratios and you\'ll see that people are buying a PS3 for the Blu-Ray and 360 for the games...
Also, the top selling games are always on 360, Wii, or DS, and maybe one on PS3...
Also, compare multiplatform releases...
The PS3 was (and might still be) the cheapest Blu Ray player out there so why wouldn\'t someone who didn\'t care about games buy one, just for movies? Plus, that whole future firmware thing with the PS3 being the only one guaranteed to be compatible...
Blu-Ray won in large part to PS3 and PS3 is selling in large part because of Blu-Ray...
Take one out and both would either fail or struggle...
-
At this point i must admit that the 360 has the better selection of games...i\'m still a huge fan of gears of war and while i haven\'t played it, i\'ve heard some great things about mass effect...and even tho EA brought the developers to mass effect, i think ms just recently bought the rights to mass effect?...i\'m not really sure but i know that ms did something to make sure that mass effect stays on the 360...:(...damn...i knew i wasn\'t ever going to see gears of war, but i really was hoping to see mass effect.
And that\'s were the difference is between sony and ms....ms is really husltin\' to get those AAA games on their system, and i think sony\'s early arrogance hurt them a bit,(i think that they\'re tryin a bit harder now to secure good games) and yea they have mgs and final fantasy, but square is already makin\' games for the 360 and metal gear, while good isn\'t a new franchise, while gears of war and mass effect are,...and good one\'s at that,...and all the other AAA games that are coming down the pike are multi-platform...ms may have lost the hd-dvd contest, but their gaming division is thriving...
-
I found that little info regarding Microsoft & EA...
"Microsoft Game Studios will retain the publishing rights for Mass Effect on Xbox 360 and future downloadable content for this installment," Microsoft said in a statement. "Microsoft Game Studios and Electronic Arts have entered into an agreement where Electronic Arts will publish all future Mass Effect titles and projects."
With console-agnostic EA as the publisher, there is now the possibility that a Mass Effect sequel could someday appear on the PlayStation 3. However, BioWare cofounder Greg Zeschuk has said that his studio would like to finish the "Mass Effect trilogy" on the Xbox 360.
^^^Does that mean that mass effect is still a possibillity on the ps3?....
-
everyone had made good points about which console seems to be in good position right now and which might win.
Making it really hard to predicts which will win out in the end.
-
The PS3 is starting to sell much better now and attach ratios are beginning to improve greatly as well in Europe.
-
Hey guys.
Too bad about Blu-Ray, I would have enjoyed HD-DVD more, especially since I\'m still not shelling out for the PS3, heh.
At least we\'ve settled on a format. Actually, Microsoft will probably just end up with an Xbox 360 Blu-Ray player instead.
And with the console sales in general, I think the 360 deserves to be on top. It\'s been the best consistently over the last couple years. Wii is fun, but the good games are too few and far between. And PS3... well, it had that one adventure game... Drake was it? ;]
-

they actually did say it wasnt out of the picture in an interview. They wouldn\'t fully say it since it was a couple weeks before toshiba backed out and officially ended it all, but the fact they still said it was a possibility at a time where they probably had to talk like they were still behind hd-dvd 100% says a lot
but going by the quality hd-dvd player they made, i wouldnt expect the blu-ray addon to be as good of a player as the ps3. unless they put more effort into it since they just seemed to make the hd-dvd player for the hell of it with no real intention for it to succeed

Speak the truth, brother.
-
And PS3... well, it had that one adventure game... Drake was it? ;]
That\'s why i didn\'t buy a PS3.... yet. ...
but i know which games and which kind of games will be coming to PS3.. and they happen to be the ones catering my taste...
if people don\'t have a clue which those games might be, ... yeah.. then they probably don\'t fit your taste in the first place...
so, it\'s less likely i\'ll go back to the 360. So, from my pov, the PS3 will be top console.
-
let\'s see...strong franchises on the 360
-gears of war
-Mass effect
-Halo
Ps3
-God of war
-Uncharted
Too Human, Fable,...and a few others comin\' down the pike exclusively on 360 are sure to make if not strong, then it\'ll be at least decent debuts,...while the ps3 at least at this point doesn\'t really have much in the way of exclusives,....just lookin\' at some of the 1st party stuff comin\' from the 360 camp,...it\'s actually lookin\' stronger than sony\'s....I really haven\'t seen anything other than god of war or uncharted that is really peaking my interest from sony\'s 1st party division....and like i mentioned earlier..all the other great games bein\' released later will be on both consoles...with the exception of metal gear,...(which will probably be released later on the 360 as well)
The ps2 had a strong library due to it\'s strong 3rd party support,...now the 360 has a huge chunk of that, plus some strong 1st party titles to boot,...and hd-dvd thing is no big deal, cause as mentioned they\'ll just add on the blu-ray player...so i think the 360 will have the edge here...also add that sony still doesn\'t know what machine it wants to stay dedicated to...the msg package is good, but isn\'t this like the 3rd or 4th time they changed platforms?...that\'s not good,...you should know what platform you want to support 2 1/2 years down the road....
-
You missed a few:

Ps3
-Gran Turismo
-Final Fantasy

Gran Turismo is good,...but i don\'t think that series is as strong as it used to be..final fantasy?...yeah i missed that one,..but square is already makin\' games on the 360 and wii so i think that it\'ll only be a matter of time...and you already see what i stated about metal gear...i\'m still a sony fan, i just hope sony tightens things up in the near future...

clips. GT has legions of followers not just in America but especially in Europe and Asia. America, it\'s mostly NASCAR junkies here so you\'re not getting the kind of fandom like the rest of the world has.

Hmmm...you\'re probably right...i guess i was kind of lettin\' my personal opinion of it get in the way of my thinking a bit (not sayin the game is bad)....but i guess i wasn\'t really thinkin\' of how the game is perceived across the world in general....

.... the as of yet\'s.... maybe...
the upcoming is another story ; part of those upcoming PS3 games have already been announced, previewed or rumoured.... alot of (potential) PS3 owners bought/are buying the PS3 for exactly those upcoming games which interest them more than the 360\'s franchises by a long shot.
-
see my only problem with 360 so far is out of all those games you listed clips - each one is a damn shooter game... even so mass effect still peaks my interest for the sake of something different. I want variation in my games... the more and more this generation goes on the more and more i see all these hyped up shooter games even on ps3 it starts to get more common to see shooter after shooter.

I don\'t see many shooters on Wii. I guess it lacks time consuming RPGs, 10 hour FMV sequences games, generic racers and GTAX.
Or I guess you don\'t want to follow the trend with the popular system this generation.

Gran Turismo is still doing strong. It hasnt lost its appeal. As for Final Fantasy it doesnt matter if Square Enix makes games for the 360. They were doing games for GC as well the previous generation. Final Fantasy wont be coming to the 360 and neither is MGS. These are hard tightened by Sony already. But even if they werent, both of these games are dying for disk space. Some may claim that multiple disks can do the job but the games are designed without that limitation in mind.
Rachet and Clank, Warhawk, Motorstorm and Resistance (which are very underrated but managed to build a huge fanbase) were also great games I might add and there are also much more exclusive titles coming all the way on the PS3. And the great thing is that they include new IPs and successful franchises.
The PS3 is starting to build a prober library.
Its good to see that both consoles are getting their fair share of awesome games. But as things look like currently the PS3 has a more promising upcoming library of announced games for this year and on.

Im just surprised that sony finally has a proprietary tech that didnt fail.
-
^^^
Blu Ray wasn\'t invented solely from Sony. There are other 10ish big name companies beside Sony that are also involved that help invented it. And there are also small name companies that also joined the Blu Ray group to support the format.

Yea, why play GTAX when you can play Super Smash Brothers X, Zelda X, Mario Kart X, Super Mario X, Metroid X, Paper Mario X :p

Sony has been successful with some of their tech. Blu Ray isnt the only one. Others still exist. Neither failed or become mass used.

Not massed used , means not successful.
Phrase it however you want, but if wasn\'t massed used, then it wasn\'t a true success. It was simply a footnote in the various formats that have came and gone.

Betamax had quite a following in Asia, so it wasn\'t exactly a failed venture.
-
some of the products that sony made that were successful are:
- Trinitron CRT TVs
- audio cassette tape & walkman
- CD players & discman
- playstation 1 & 2 & perhaps 3...
Formats that failed are:
- betamax (failed as a consumer products, but a success for studios production)
- Minidisc
- Digital8
- MicroMv
- SACD
In the early 90s, Sony and philips made a disc format that they called MMCD (multimedia compact disc), that can hold up to 7.2 Gbytes dual layer which was conflicting with Toshiba, Pioneer, Panasonic DVD format which can hold up to 9.4 Gbytes dual layers. After months of talk between the two format, sony & philips decided to use the higher storage DVD and abandoned MMCD, but with some features that were on MMCD being used on DVD like EFI, data decoding method, which reduce the DVD data size from 5 Gbytes to 4.7 Gbytes, but more resistance to scratch and dirt.
Had sony not pulled the plug on MMCD. we might have a format war between MMCD versus DVD. They learned their lesson on Beta versus VHS back in the days, so they joined the DVD group. Beside, DVD have a higher storage density than MMCD.
As soon as DVD starting to become popular. Sony and other big names companies like panasonic, pioneer, philips, sharp, samsung, etc invented Blu Ray.
Toshiba getting cocky about their DVD format decided not to join Blu Ray group...and later decided to make HD-DVD format...and after some negotiations between blu ray and hd-dvd, toshiba still refuses to use the more storage capacity of blu ray. So, we have a format war between HD-DVD and Blu Ray...and we know how that turns out...

Bye bye

Yeah some of the ones you mentioned failed. Others are still used here and there like their Memory Sticks.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Memory_Stick
Another notable successful product was the introduction of the 3.5 floppy disks.
-
Don\'t copy that floppy!!!
-
speaking of floppy disks, damn are they slow. Even their storage capacity is only 1.44 Mbytes max. That\'s okay for storing word documents, and simple and small images. But when it come to big images, music, and video. it couldn\'t read as fast and will run out of space in seconds. They are good for their times back in the 80s.
I just don\'t like how Sony make their digital picture camera with the floppy disk formats in early 2000. Its funny that my photo teacher also uses those floppy disk digital camera back in 2002 for taking digital pictures. He seems to know a lot when it comes to film cameras, but when it comes to digital technology like digital camera and bit rate, storage capacity, and reading writing speed. He\'s just clueless...hence, why i kept seeing a lot of floppy disks cameras in his class. But I kept my mouth shut and respect that and use the floppy disk digital camera for some of his project assignments.
those floppy disk cameras can only take 640 x 480 pictures with like over 10:1 compression ratio reducing the images size to like 20 - 30ish kbytes. And even when a picture is reduce to 20 kbytes, it took like 10 seconds to write it on a floppy disk.
And what\'s worst, they are expensive like $200 - $400 back in the days. Its just ridiculous.
I think if the teacher is familiar with computer and storage capacity, he would probably bought the most popular format which is memory cards which can range from 4 Mbytes to 512 Mbytes back in the days. And the read and writing speed rate are like 100 times faster than floppy disk. Plus, they are more compact too. And the cost difference between a floppy disk camera and a memory card digital camera is small like $50 different for a decent one...
-
I didnt know they are still using the floppy disks for new products. Wow
-
I didnt know they are still using the floppy disks for new products. Wow
fortunatedly, sony discontinued them like a few years ago. according to Wikipedia, the Sony Mavica (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sony_Mavica) was first introduced in 1997. In 2002, if i recalled correctly, sony sold them at price ranging from $200 to $400 as I seen a handful of them in my photography class. Imagine how much more expensive they were back in 1997/1998.:D
Its just funny how Sony make a digital camera model using a floppy disk format. They are aiming at consumers that don\'t know much about digital technology and want the familiar and convenient format of floppy disk.
Many consumers didn\'t know that memory cards store much more data, read, and write much faster than floppy disks. They didn\'t even know that memory card is also easy to use too, by just simply plugging in the USB cable to the computer and voila, it will transfer the pics to the computer so you can print or save it on the computer. Or just bought a memory card readers....
Many consumers, especially older generations people aren\'t familiar with memory card, usb, etc. They live in the era of computers that use floppy disks. So even like 2 decades later, they were sold on with a floppy disk digital camera because of the familiarity and it has the Sony brand on it.
Even sony also make a digital still camera that were saved on a mini CD-Rs. Which is still a lot better than floppy disk in many ways...but still the storage capacity, reading, writing, and compactness of the memory cards are much better. Plus, with memory cards, you can overwrite file, delete images while CD-Rs are only write once...
its a good thing sony finally abandoned both format. The funny thing is, only Sony support floppy disk digital camera back in the days when other brand brands were mainly using memory cards...and that says something. I believe that is also the case with mini CD-Rs where only sony use it on their digital still camera.
