It wasn\'t until Rockstar turned over the controller and let us play GTA IV that we could finally confirm that, yes indeed, these statements are all true. The next iteration in the Grand Theft Auto series isn\'t just a prettier version of San Andreas or Vice City. It\'s more cinematic, more realistic, and yeah, more fun. It\'s a whole new ballgame in Liberty City.

i\'ve only gotten through the 1st page, but this game is going to be amazing.
its a bit less tedious of a read than the hands-on.

• According to the journalists, the first hands-on minutes were enough to solidify their feelings of how the game is going to kick ass.
• Liberty City has more streets than any other game in the genre.
• You cannot enter every building. However, you can interact with most of them. Rooftops, stairways, fire escapes, partial interiors, etc.
• Niko will not be able to manage property, gangs or trade.
• Bowling, dart games, drinking games, strip clubs and night clubs will be available.
• The core of GTA IV is all about the human relationship.
• Sometimes, your contacts may call you during a hard mission to ask you a service. In this instance, you can choose between the mission or whatever your contact is asking. If you ditch your mission to do things with your phone contact, you may see consequences. Whether or not you will be able to replay the mission that you went away from remains to be seen.
• The new impression of seeing a next generation living, breathing city is absolutely stunning.
• The pedestrian population density changes between the place/borough you are in.
• If you walk around the street with a gun in your hand, pedestrians who have a phone can call the police.
• In one instance when Niko tried to carjack someone, the scared innocent driver sped away so fast that he hit two cars.
• During the first mission that the journalists played, they tried to carjack someone without a gun. The driver beat up Niko. Niko got beat up so bad that he ended up at the hospital.
• Pedestrians react in a very realistic way. The journalists said that it is as if each person in the game leads his/her own life.
• It took 15 minutes to go through 2/3 of Manhattan with a boat. It took 10 minutes by car to go through Brooklyn and Central Park.
• The cars can be destroyed very realistically. Every part of the car can bend and fold.
• GTA IV has a wider variety of mission types. The missions are more difficult than in previous games.
• The game is done. Most clipping bugs are gone. The game is super smooth in terms of frame rate. (Note: The game is not 100% done. It is not "gold" yet.)
• If you press the jump button, Niko can climb everywhere. In other words, wall climbing from San Andreas has returned. You can strafe on walls, too.
• There is a swimming club.
• If you have five stars, it\'s very difficult to escape from the cops. They are everywhere and they don\'t joke with you. They are smarter than in previous incarnations of the series.
• While in a boat, the sound effects are awesome. You can hear the sound of the waves that beat the front of the boat.
• With powerful weapons, you can shoot through the walls.
• The weather that was seen during the four hours of gameplay included fog, rain, sun and clouds. A variety of colors can be seen depending on the time of day.
• When you die, you pay $100 but you get to keep your weapons.
• When you go to jail after getting busted, you pay more than $100 and you lose your weapons.
• While you are drunk, it\'s very difficult to control Niko. The drunk sensation is perfectly done.
• When stealing a car from a pedestrian, Niko didn\'t get into the car before the pedestrian sped up. Niko held onto the car as the pedestrian glided along the road. (Note: It may have been the pedestrian holding on to a car Niko was in. The translation is sketchy.)
• Choppers with search lights are in the game.
• Women will striptease in strip clubs when you pay.
• Depending on the borough you are in, pedestrians may speak different languages. Italian, Chinese and those in the Bronx are different when it comes to language.
• Health kits are available only in buildings.
• Grenade and molotov cocktail sound effects are stunning.

Kikizo:
the targeting, shooting and cover system is something we became comfortable with quickly on our second attempt of the first mission. (...) In cover, you can either blind fire with the right trigger (which offers loose, inaccurate aiming and scattershot gunfire), or you can lock on with the left trigger and shoot normally, which exposes you to danger but gives you accurate aiming.
When you\'re locked on, you can cycle through targets within sight, and you can use the right stick to accurately angle up for headshots or down towards feet or elbows (or whatever part of them is exposed if they too are hiding behind cover). Easing the reticule into the position you want is a refinement that works very nicely, and it benefits from the higher definition graphics because you can see what\'s going on and target precisely, avoiding the over-simplified auto-targeting people have complained about in the past.

ign also said in their thing that shooting out of the car is way better. They didnt have any pictures, just descriptions, but it sounds like the camera zooms in to your character and has more of a cinematic feeling, and you can actually aim. as opposed to just being able to shoot directly left and right.

hm..there arent any wanted stars, but i heard they might\'ve changed that system. If the left circle is showing the best route for the player, then id be sold but u cant see it too well.
i kind of hope that isnt gta4 just because the slow motion parts were retarded. They were cool for the crashes, but when they happened in the midst of driving, u end up running into other cars, screwing up u getting away. If its a button that causes that, then that\'ll be cool

i dont pre-order..can usually walk into best buy with no problem. plus i never know when fry\'s or circuit city is going to have a deal with games..ended up getting vegas 2 for 40 bucks from fry\'s the week it came out, and they did the same with assassins creed but i got the limited edition since i\'d been waiting 2+ years for the game..only game ill ever get any sort of special edition release.

I can\'t find any hard evidence either way but it sounds like the game was made for both systems from the ground up.

For the first time, Rockstar gave us hands-on access to both the PS3 and 360 versions of GTA IV. The good news is that no matter which system you prefer, you’re going to have a great-looking game to play. There are only some minor visual differences noticeable between the two preview versions. The 360 build is brighter and has slightly more vibrant color while [COLOR="Red"]the PS3 build has less aliasing issues[/COLOR]. Both display a solid, consistent framerate even during scenes with heavy pedestrian traffic and wild explosions. While graphics whores will find subtle differences to nitpick, the average Joe is going to be happy with either version.

from what I read all around the net, the PS3 version is looking just a bit better, sharper and it\'s not suffering consistent textures/polys pup up(HDD install in PS3 is helping a "BIT"...and I don\'t know if X360 version has even optional installation, which is not confirmed anywhere yet...) and lighting issues as the XBox 360 version. it\'s not confirmed, just what some guys saw in some videos from both versions. So Fasty, you have no reason to be worried :)

I think Chrono Cross got a 10/10 too. I think Chrono Cross is a very good game with graphic pushing the PSOne limits, and the load time is fast too. With the 360 bein\' out first, and most deveoplers finding it easier to develop on, maybe they\'re a bit agitated when they have to program for the ps3...and i know the ps2 had similar problems,...but it seems that it\'s even more of a problem with ps3....alone in the dark was supposed to have a same day release as it\'s 360 counterpart, but because of the developers havin\' problems with the ps3 version, they are going to release a few months later...

well, just to let you know, I installed it and have just had a 5 hour drive round session without it crashing once, so I\'m relieved.
played bowling, pool, darts, got niko pissed, got hit by a car whilst staggering into the road, climbed up some tall things and used those tourist binocular things to stare as far as I could see without it crashing.
I might have a go at multiplayer later

the multiplayer is amazing. I only free-roamed single player for 10 minutes so i dont know too much, but the dialogue so far seems like the best of the series.
but cops and robbers is kick ass with 16 people. free roam is a little meh with random people because you don\'t know what to do..just roll around killing the same person over and over until it becomes a vendetta with eachother
the only pop-in i\'ve seen in the game are grass patches in the park..but other than that it looks great, even with the city being the size that it is.

pretty widespread apparently, widespread enough for rockstar to be aware of the problem.
a lot of people are speculating that it\'s either a problem with the 60gb model, or dodgy batches bought from gamestop.
I don\'t know wtf is causing it, these rumours are probably way off the mark, all I know is that it can\'t exclusively be the 60gb model, because my copy hasn\'t crashed once, in the whole 10+ hours I\'ve been playing it, as well as that, a lot of x360 users have been experiencing the problem.
one interesting theory I have read about, is the fact that could be an installation problem, something not being installed onto the HD properly. some people have stated that deleting game saves and uninstalling completely, then reinstalling from scratch often helps, though not always.
anyway, contrary to all the rumours that are surrounding it, I really don\'t think anyone knows what\'s wrong.
I feel bad for everyone else that is having these problems, I really do, I\'m just immensely relieved that they have not effected me (touches wood)

The original Resident Evil pioneered though in its time in terms of visuals and atmosphere and made the survival horror more known to people ;)
It is not a coincidence that people believe it was resident evil that brought the survival horror to the scene when there were previous attempts by others
Issues were redundant compared to the overall experience it offered back then.
I believe it is impossible to find an actually perfect game. But some games deserve a 10 for what the developers have achieved in a specific time frame I think :)

Oh i agree completely....resident evil was finally a survival horror game done right and yes for it\'s time the graphics were amazing....it was just kind of funny seein\' that game get 10\'s in every category,..sound/graphics/story..etc...:p..I still like the very first resident evil...it\'s a great game.....as far gta goes,...i haven\'t played it yet,....i\'m sure it\'s a great game,...and i\'ll probably end up gettin\' it before people start complaining about it, and then rockstar might be forced to take out some content....

my sister is a teacher teaching kids between 11 and 15, and she has been told by the kids she teaches that their parents are taking them to the stores over the weekend to buy them a copy, some are even being taken out of class to get the game.

gta\'s never been known for amazing graphics, especially when the map is as huge as it is and there arent load times when you go in buildings. even then its a damn good looking game

Zeriuzzly, you can get a pretty good HDTV for not a whole alotta money these days. Samsung, Sony, Sharp is allz good.

The blur is actually a nice effect. It makes the far away stuff seem really far away, making the whole world appear even larger than it is.

But as for being a stand out game, I think it really does sit by itself with an atmosphere very unlike other games. It\'s not really cartoony, and since the story is so dark and realistic, it gives it a whole Rated-R Movie feel. It definitely feels different than any game I\'ve played, in that respect, including past GTAs...
The interesting thing is just how differently someone could play versus someone else. I stick to the storyline and missions while others could just run around killing things and making explosions, so you probably get out of it what you put into it.

I actually felt the same way, but the more I got into it I started to miss Roman\'s antics and would try to call him... got mad when he didn\'t have a job for me :p
Niko has also grown on me a ton. You get to see how loyal he is to his friends and he doesn\'t give a damn whose toes he steps on

the main problem with the characters at the beginning is they introduce a shit-ton of people..im not too far, but far enough that there should be a slow-down in new characters..not so much still
i got into it after getting into the middle, huge city (with times square and what-not). Have like 5 dudes with large missions, on top of the side jobs, the cop car stuff, stealing cars, etc...almost like theres too much on my plate. would help if i knew which ones were the side missions and which were the main ones so i could get all the side guys done first. they went for making it one large world but my mind is weird and i like getting stuff done in a certain order.
id give this game a 9.7/10..at least up to where i am..im anticipating it getting better

one thing that I think is inferior about this game to all the other GTA games prior, is the radio stations, they are just so boring, the other ones, especially vice city and san andreas, the dj\'s had character, and the music was pretty memorable.
apart from lazlow, I don\'t really think there\'s anything worthwhile on the radios.

The only one worthwhile is that eastern european one... and only then for that one pop song it plays.
dunno whats shes singing or anything, but its a catchy as shit little russian pop song.

going to agree too. the only rock song thats good is the one from silence of the lambs..and its just good because it was hilarious hearing it the first time.
other than that, theres just one song on the classical music channel thats good..sounds all erie and shit..wish i could find out what it was called but thats near impossible. guess i could go youtube throguh all the songs in the manual..
it\'s weird because most of the songs for the commercials/trailers were really good and fit with the game. i\'ve come across one of those but i was in the midst of a mission so i didnt listen to it all

call zit on the ingame phone (948 555 0100), lazlows automated voice picks up and asks to hear the tune that\'s playing, then he hangs up and sends a message back to let you know the name of the song and the artist.

yea.
(havent gotten to the last island in gta4 yet) There does seem like there was more side stuff to do in san andreas, which had a crazy amount of things to do. not that there isnt enough to do in gta4, but flying planes wouldve been nice.
but gameplay wise, it\'s easily the best out of the series. The driving is more realistic, the cover system is fun, and the sounds during gun battles are up there with the gun battle in Heat. can just tell it was way more polished as apposed to sticking as much shit into it as possible like san andreas, which is my 2nd favorite
the reason it\'s not clearly the best, bar-none, is because people are expecting the same jump they made from gta2 to gta3..which they can never do again, i dont care what anyone says.

^ Same here. I pump up the brightness + contrast + saturation in the game\'s menu. GTA has always had issues with this, glad they gave us options to address it.

Having a rough time with Dwayne\'s second mission. The one where I have to kill off the three managers at the strip club. I\'ve beaten the first manager down so there\'s no gun fire that alerts the bouncers. But getting to the second manager is tough coz he\'s in the private room getting a lap dance while a bodyguard stands by the door. Everytime I use that shotgun, the other bouncers outflank me. >8|

Got GTA4 yesterday, and just played 1 hour, played bowling with Michelle, and saved the crazy cousing from albanian usurers and then in pursuit of one of them, nice! I stole a car, I broke the window, and close to me a pedestrian who turned his head when I did it, and he called the police with his mobile when I was getting away. I have my mobile with phone book and messages, cool, and I can call my friends when I like to go out, or they can call me or I can cancel an appointment. I\'ll play more today.

I finally did the multiplayer last night. Brilliant fun! I wasn\'t expecting much but when you load a car full of your teammates and chase the rival team in theirs it\'s such a blast. :D Even when you die you don\'t curse the game (ex: lag!, cheap!, bs!) because it\'s so funny.
Rocket Launchers are a bit gay though.

Anybody losing interest? I think I\'ve only just begun to dig into the storyline, but I find myself doing crossword puzzles in the newspaper or anything else instead of wanting to go back.
I think part of it is that some of the missions are a lot harder than before, but maybe also because there\'s no real reason to continue. I can do missions or not. The game doesn\'t care, so maybe I don\'t either.

I\'m kind of in the same boat, when I first got it, I was playing it hours on end.
but as it is right now, I am going for a couple of days at a time without playing it, and I\'m not even through with the stroyline missions.
I\'ll get stuck on a particular mission, then I\'ll give up, leave it for a day or 2, then try again until I beat it.
I have hardly even touched the online mode yet, despite all the rave reviews it got. the GTA4 online mode just cannot compete with COD4 online for me.
I\'d be thinking my gaming time is split between GTA4 offline, and COD4 online about 50-50 right now.

one has been doing multiplayer for 4 versions of the game and has an infinite amount of others to get an influence from to make it as smooth as possible. the other one has...crackdown, maybe?
you also cant really compare the different genres
my main problem with the story is you get no connection with people giving you the missions, so you just end up doing the missions for the sake of doing the missions instead of trying to accomplish a goal. ur characters goal is simply to get paid, except when the story gets going near the end when hes looking for some people

One thing they did right for sure is when they give you options of whether or not to let a person live. There\'s one choice I\'ve seen in the storyline so far that really had me scratching my head, and of course, I second guessed myself pretty much right after pulling the trigger. That was a unique thought process that I haven\'t had before playing a game.

I haven\'t picked this game up yet and part of the reason is that i actually didn\'t think the characters were that interesting, and after hearing this..i\'ll probably just pass on it,..i was never a big gta fan anyway...the only game in the series that i did like was san andreas,....i\'m more of a survival horror fan anyway....*can\'t wait for silent hill/siren/ res evil 5!!*.....so is this game in your opinion overrated?

Is it overrated? Maybe. But it got a ton of hype.
It\'s definitely a great game. When we\'re picking on things like the likability of the characters, you know that Rockstar has come a long way with everything.
Honestly, after a number of hours, I\'m starting to warm up to Niko and I\'m enjoying splitting my time between missions and generally just screwing around...
