Title: Dissappointed with next gen....
Post by: clips on March 13, 2008, 07:11:59 PM
I know i\'m probably in the minority here,...but in sea full 1st person shooters,..lackluster 3rd person shooters, no variety for football,...and just underwhelming gameplay overall,..this current gen gaming has been dissapointing to me....i was really amped for assasins creed, but that game sucks,..too repetitive,...heavenly sword?...good game, but it brings nothing new to the table...(god of war actually plays better than that)..

The only thing that i can say about all of the games is that we can no longer complain about the graphics...army of two?....that game had the potential to be great,...but again gameplay issues and shotty AI hampers this game alot...which brings me to the AI,...for years we\'ve been told that the AI in these games would perform nearly flawlessly yet,..we\'re still seeing AI that will run right into a barrage of bullets and die....i know it\'s hard to program AI to do certain things, but with todays tech, i think it should be better than it is....

I guess you can say i\'m just ranting,...i\'m just kinda shocked that the big games that have been released already are just mediorce....yes there are a few that are actually good... gears of war, oblivion and maybe devil may cry from what i hear,...idk i guess i\'m just gettin tired of hearin that just about every game that\'s bein\' created is a 1st person shooter, which i hate....then all of the other games that are out are just severly lacking in gameplay,..yea they look good, but something is painfully amiss in the gameplay...

anyway i\'m just ranting a bit,....i\'m a bit grouchy i guess because i was kinda lookin\' foward to army of two bein\' somewhat decent,..but i\'m not even going to try to convince myself that it\'s good,...when i saw the last few gameplay trailers for it,..i knew that it would be lackluster....thoughts?

assassins had the same problem as mass effect..the developers have a HUGE world to make, and have everything look right, that gameplay had to take a back seat. sounds like theyre/im making actual gameplay sound trivial, but thats what had to be done for those games to work. Now if the next games have a lack of variety in sidequests, then i will have a problem. People have way to high of expectations out of these 1st set of games that are already trying to accomplish way more than they can chew.

But overall your right. Last gen console shooters were a joke, now they can actually make them fun, so people jump on the wagon, and if your into those games, theres a really good selection (cod and vegas mainly for me, but theres still other decent ones).

Army of two...i think a lot of people thought wouldnt be as good as it could be. I always had a feeling itd be a good coop experience, and play once or twice, but thats about it. The thing with having all these shooters, is that it does take a lot for one to be recognized more than the others..COD 4 set a new bar with arcadey/realism mixes, R6 series still has some room to grow but seeing as i went from hating the developers for ditching the pc crowd to probably buying both games on this gen is a big step.

just turn into a pessimist, and everything will work out :D. You think gears of war is one of the best games this gen..you\'re probably going to be disappointed. It doesnt separate itself that much from the other games..especially now that more games have been released.

^^^Tru enough...i need to lower my expectations a bit,...which is something that i actually always do,..but i just kinda thought that with the current tech we have now, alot of what developers said that they couldn\'t do with last gen\'s tech, they would definitely be able to do it now....but i guess they were just reachin\' really hard. But yeah i gotta look at it from their perspective...it takes alot to create huge worlds and to detail them and then add everything else that goes along with it.

And i guess developers are still in the early stages of learning how to program properly on these machines,...so yeah i guess i need to give\'em some slack...in the near future i\'ll probably pick up army of two, heavenly sword, alone in the dark and possibly lost planet....looking foward to deep space, mgs, silent hill 5 and res evil 5 as well.

gta4 comes out at the end of next month, and its been sounding amazing..id definitly pass on army of two and just get that, unless you\'ll always have another person to play with. I heard ur teamate AI is pretty bad.

I\'ve got a few games on my radar..gta4, star wars: the force unleashed looks huge, battlefield: bad company.

Im more tired of hearing about games for 3 years and getting tired of waiting than anything else..fallout 3, brothers in arms: hells highway, prototype..

Not true. Each system has been out long enough to have a solid library of games and every system is lacking really.

Well I kind of feel the same.

Only a couple of games made me go "wow", but the majority of the so called AAA titles are not executed well, and/or are the typical shooter/FPS we always got on PCs.

The 360 has some games I want to get on my hands, and despite that its been in the market for more than 2 years, they are few. Well, I have most of them anyways and thats Bioshock and Gears of War. Which also happen to be shooters

The PS3 surprisingly for me has a few more upcoming titles I am interested in, probably because of the great franchises I was experiencing on the PS2, that will eventually appear on a next gen form and because they are more of the console experience I always loved.

I am definitely not the guy that is into games that are best known for their playability on PCs.

I\'m pretty much just waiting for Metal Gear Solid 4.

Resident Evil 5\'s trailer made me shit my grandmothers underwear, too.

That\'s about it.

Which is why old school gaming will never die...

8-bit & 16-bit > Current Gen

Such a shame Saturn & Dreamcast, 2 of the greatest of all time, died so prematurely while graphics, hype, and Blu-Ray are what sells today...

Still want Resident Evil 5, though...

And this is why you\'re my all time favorite poster.

Respect for the Saturn & Dreamcast. The two greatest systems ever. The Saturn is one of the single most underrated systems.

The Dreamcast loses off of the controller alone.

I\'m not disappointed with this gen so far, as a Wii60 owner.

I don\'t see how one could be. I understand the "LAST GEN BUT WITH BETTER GRAPHICS" fatigue, but otherwise...

Own a 360, its really hard for me to say if I\'m disappointed or not.  In some respects, i wish there was a larger variety of games.  I\'ve been dying to play a good tactical game/RPG.  Those seem to be having a larger home in the current portable systems.  But really, I\'m content with the games because I don\'t have the time to really exhaust the titles that I am interested in.  If I were still in high school and had more free time, I think I\'d have to agree with Clips.

Well for me it\'s just that every other game that comes out is a 1st person shooter....and i absolutely hate those....but i know everybody and their mother practically plays\'em hence why they\'re bein\' created...it just seems to me that this current console generation is being completely domninated by it...i;ve also been noticing that the current length of games are now bein\' cut down to what? 4 - 6 hours for some games?...that is unacceptable....but to offset that, they add more content for online play...again...i understand EVERYBODY is online nowadays...but online is something that i just don\'t do....

Which is why at the very beginning i stated that i was in the minority on this issue as i\'m sure most everybody else is enjoying their experience on the current systems....i\'m mostly a big fan of third person shooters and not 1st person....god of war 2 had excellent level design, great gameplay and story progression and length...todays games are barely over 6 hours....games comin\' down the pike might have more length (mgs, res evil) but it seems less is bein focused on the single player campaign and more is bein focused on online content...

I understand why they are doin it..*it\'s extremely popular*...it\'s just that in my case, it\'s completely useless for me....

I think once I plop down on the couch and start playing GTA4 I\'ll have that wiener-tingling feeling all over again like I did when I saw the opening sequence of 007 for N64.

See?...another 1st person shooter...:(....but i did happen to see some of the gameplay for it....actually i saw the pc version and the 360 version,...and i gotta say that the 360 version was just moving waaay too fast...while the zombies in the pc version were quick, it wasn\'t as frantic or as crazy looking as the 360...i think they need to slow down the action in the 360 version a bit...

good thing I like FPS games I guess.. seems there are a ton of them nowadays.  I\'m probably gonna get a ps3 at some time later this year.. partly for the blu-ray and partly for the gaming.

Need to get that 42" LCD first ;)

Patience pays off :

Silent Hill 5
MGS4
Ico team game
The Getaway 3
Mercenaries 2
Splinter Cell Conviction
Lost Oddysee
Little Big Planet

and yes i know they\'re fps but i\'m interested nonetheless :

Killzone 2
Far Cry 2

well, that\'s enough for me already to justify a next gen machine.

Fortunately, i didn\'t screw myself by buying one \'too early\' heheh :thumb: (although i have to admit i resold my 360 but that was for reasons of abroad study)

i\'m actually glad i got a ps3 when i did,...even tho there weren\'t that many games for it,...i got it around when assasins creed and heavenly sword were already out....i\'d rather have it now anyway, cause it would\'ve been kinda hard to buy the system, then turn around and buy some games for it.(now all i have to do is just concentrate on buying games)...but that mgs package is definitely going to move some units...

This gaming thing is a bit expensive as well...$60.00 games...$500.00 consoles?....the days of brand new $299.00 consoles are over....and the wii doesn\'t count since it\'s the gamecube 2.5...;)
Title: Dissappointed with next gen....

Well deduct inflation and there you will get cheaper prices ;)

I think the bigger problem with expensive games is that development costs increase instead of decrease with every introduction of new technology.

But you have to remember that the days of the old cardridge based consoles games were much more expensive than they are today and they were priced based on title popularity. Popular games were sometimes much more expensive. And 1$ was much more then than it is today

True. I remember the early PAL N64 times. AAA N64 carts were sometimes as high as 219 Dfl (the old currency), which would be about 100 Euros.
