April\'s Fool?
Hard to say....most likely not tho...cause if blu-ray is the preferred platform, microsoft might be forced to convert,...i\'ve seen a few interviews with people talkin\' to folks at microsoft, and asking them "since blu-ray is the preferred platform, are they going to convert?"....and their response was that "they aren\'t worried about that, the consumer can have great hd-dvd movies right now"...so who knows, but i think blu-ray will probably force the hand of microsoft sooner or later...
-
Would they put games on that format?
-
how would the current 17+ million owners play them?
-
^^^Y\'know i just thought about that...since blu-ray and hd-dvd are two completely different formats,...i don\'t think microsoft can convert over without alienating the current user base,...so i guess they might be kinda forced to stay with the hd-dvd format.

They just wait 3 months until their current 360 breaks down for the 3rd time

Making games on HD-DVD format is still a bad idea. Thats why they never did.
And since the HD-DVD is dead it doesnt contribute to anything. They wont support HD-DVD more than they do now.
They never actively did anyways. It was simply an add on that played available HD-DVD movies.
They might bring a BD 360 or a BD add on in the future but the format will only exist to play movies. They can easily convert without alienating as long as Blu Ray is just for movies
Anyways I thing that was an April Fool\'s joke though
-
It doesn\'t make sense to me to have a BD add on like it didn\'tmake sense to me to have an HD-DVD add on. Seemed pointless to me from the getgo.
-
I think it was mostly a way to manipulate consumer perception than add any mass appealing utility.
That perception they wanted to pass was that: PS3 played high def formats and was expensive vs 360 was cheaper but could also play High def if you wanted to.
It didnt matter if people bought the add on. It mattered that the PS3 unique feature didnt look so unique with that option.
It was more of a marketing strategy than anything else. Besides that add on was compatible with PCs as well if I am not mistaken

oh...ok....i must\'ve been confused.....i always thought that they were usin\' hd-dvd\'s for their gaming format,.....so are they still using regular dvd\'s for their games?

Yep.
Regular , plain ole\' DVD\'s.
Which means, M$ would stand nothing to gain by releasing a BD add-on. In fact, they\'d lose. They would have R&D, marketing and then let\'s not even get into the royalties they would owe Sony . Maybe next generation we\'ll see a BD in an MS product, but right now, it makes no logical business sense to release another add-on just to support a high-def movie format. Especially, when they have their own download able service to support.

^ yea, regular DVD-9
edit- doh!

Yep. Because they needed the console in time and at an affordable price in 2005 they made the console use DVDs. High Def formats were delayed and expensive.
MS decided to market a HD-DVD add on for the 360 to counter attack PS3\'s marketing that it was the ultimate High Def device and the only console that gave you the chance to enjoy HD movies. Games on the HD-DVD were out of the question as they would fragment the users and the amount of sales a title would get.
MS might consider a Blu Ray add on or a Blu Ray 360 for "qualitative" gains though in the future. I dont see any other gain. Although that would mean extra costs for MS at the same time it is a good strategy in terms of countering Sony\'s efforts to market the PS3 as the only console that has the next gen format.
The Elite itself was partially such an effort offering bigger storage (120GB) than the PS3 and an HDMI (areas that the premium 360 lacked next to the PS3), at the same price as a 40GB PS3. Well someone who was considering to get a PS3 might as well reconsider his purchase with such an option available and buy an Elite.

no HD-DVD no care

I think if the PS3 starts to catch up in sales, Microsoft should make the add on. It\'s obvious consumers like their system better, PS3 is selling because it can play the movies. So I\'d try to take that advantage away a bit. Sony will get money for Blu-Ray discs either way, but at least it\'d help control the PS3 install base a bit...

From what Ive heard, MS is looking to go more of the HD downloads.
-
Sony is in talks with movie companies to provide downloadable movies as well :)
They said that their service would be unique compared to other existing services. I am curious to see what they will have in store for us.
Btw I love the new Playstation Store. It is brilliant, userfriendly, functional and fast! Makes browsing enjoyable. Home integration and feature additions can make the Playstation Store a wonderful online service.
