Title: Five lies we all tell at work...
Post by: clips on April 17, 2008, 04:17:28 AM
Hmmm.....

http://www.cnn.com/2008/LIVING/worklife/04/16/cb.work.lies/index.html

I\'m definitely guilty of 1,2 and 5....tho for no.1 i\'d probably say somethin\' like..."ok i\'ll handle it" or "no problem"....when i really feel like sayin\' "DO IT YOURSELF BIATCH!"...:fro:

No.2 for me is just for those times when we have those boring ass meetings and i\'m just ready to go home, but we always have one idiot outta the group that wants to ask dumbass questions......and since i work 3rd shift, most of our meetings come right in at 7:00 am right after workin\' an 11 to 12 hour episode...

For no.5 it\'s mostly when one of our systems is having a problem and i\'m tryin\' to either fix or answer an error msg or program or tryin\' to correct an error with one of our library silos or servers...and the users out in the field that are on the system will constantly call and ask "have you fixed the problem yet?"....and i\'ll always tell them, "the system will be back up in a few minutes"...which sometimes can turn into alot of minutes depending on how severe the situation is....even then when they call i\'ll still say..."it\'ll be up in a few minutes"...:D

Oddly enough, I don\'t really do any of those things.

1. the current job includes stuff which wasn\'t even in the job description and they happen to be my weakpoints : so i had a good chat with my manager and i told \'em i really have difficulty with such stuff and that i wouldn\'t guarantee instant succes.

2. sometimes i say ; "atm i don\'t have questions YET"

3. at my job they\'re not so strict about being \' late \' at work

4. the thing is ; i really have allergies, especially now in spring with all that blossom stuff. Besides... the Euro healthcare system covers me better than the USA one.

5. I\'m at my best at crunch time.. so usually i tend to lag a bit anyway... and when it\'s THE time... I deliver.

I use variations on 1, and I use 2 and 5 all the time.  Also probably would have used 3 but no one notices if I come in like, up to an hour late, and 4 we don\'t have to use personal days to take a day off sick.

I like to rush... so I don\'t have to rush.

People always ask me why I work so hard, depending on the job. That\'s why.

I can honestly say, I\'ve not used any of those. If I don\'t want to come to work, I simply call and give the reason. Hell, I called in when X2 came out and simply said I was going to the movie.  If I have a question, I ask it. If I don\'t want to do something, I state that I don\'t want to, but if I must, I will.

At least they will admire you for your honesty. That\' probably weighs more than just lying.

That\'s the way I look at it. Don\'t pussyfoot around the matter. State your mind and be done with it.

I\'m allowed six call ins - each one of those can be for one work week (3 - 12 hour days). I never use those for sick. I always say why I\'m not there. I\'ve called in for movies, when I got my new TV, hell I called in once and just said I wasn\'t interested in coming to work. See, where they get you is, if you call in and say you\'re sick and then caught out of work goofing off, you can be fired / put on probation or some nonsense. So, I just don\'t lie about it. And I always take the whole work week off if I call in and I always state, when I call in the first time, I won\'t be there the rest of the week.

Factor that in with three weeks vacation, so I get a total nine weeks off during the year. Not to mention, I only work on the average three days a week (with an odd four day or five day week).

Plenty of time off for me. However, it should also be noted, I\'ve never had a single tardy. I am always on time at work and sometimes stay over when needed.  In fact, I stayed over once for an extra four hours (Already worked 12) to help out, so the company gave me a day off, a gift card to Wal-mart and a thank you.

As far as doing my job and not questioning it. There are ways around that. You get to know people and how to take people. When you do that, you know how to approach things. I am not saying I don\'t do my job or I refuse to do stuff. NO, I do it when told, but if I have a problem with it for what ever reason, I will state that reason.

Quote
"No, I don\'t have any questions."

That lie is just plain stupid. You learn something new every day, at least I do. I don\'t believe in dumb questions, so I\'m not afraid to ask them. If for some reason, I don\'t want to ask it infront of people, I ask in private. If you ask the question, there is no confusion and if there isn\'t confusion, there should be no reason you can\'t perform your job at great level.

"I\'m right on schedule.
I make fun of this lie daily. Our work is totally schedule based. But the schedule changes due to customer demands and machine breakdowns , etc. My running joke with management and my boss is, "when the new schedule comes out, I bet we\'ll be right back on schedule". It\'s a great joke due to the fact with each new schedule, they take in account what has happened the past 24 hours and redo it all. Sure, we\'re behind schedule now, but unless it gets real bad, we\'ll be back on schedule tomorrow!

My company gives personal days. My boss really could care less what we use them for.

Both jobs I have would be an automatic firing if I said I was calling off for X2.

i only worked once in the summer youth problem for school as a custodian aide and my supervisor is really mean and bossy.  working for her is rough, and I didn\'t know she was supposed to be working too as I thought she\'s the boss that she don\'t have to work. but it turns it\'s her job to work too.

She always ordered me and my co-workers to do the cleaning and organizing things for her.  Every once in a while when her boss came over to check out on her, she pretended to be working or pretending to be busy.  That\'s when I start to get suspicious.  One day i told her I am going to quit, and she tried to deceive me by saying that I won\'t get paid if I quit.  At first I thought that I won\'t get paid at all for the weeks I already worked so I didn\'t quit.  Until i asked the youth employment program if I can still get paid for the weeks I already worked even if I quit part way before the paycheck time.  And they said yes.  Had I known about this earlier, I would have quit much sooner or transfer to a different job right after the first day I worked for her.

After about a month of exhaustion working for her, I finally switched to a different boss.  Working the same job as custodian aide but this supervisor is 20 times cooler than my previous so-called boss.  When i worked with him, I didn\'t know he was doing the janitor works too.  I thought I was in trouble that he has to do the cleaning and stuffs but it turns out he is just doing his job and my job is just to help him out.  He finally told me that woman tricked me to do everything for her.

I worked for him for like a month until summer is over and school begins.  He asked me if I wanted to continue to work during school days.   I refused mostly because I was in bad shape from bad lucks life, and I am so stressed out and quite exhausted from 8 hours a day of heavy duty works of carrying heavy stuffs to scrubbing.

otherwise, I might still work for him.  Even if the paid is minimum wage.

Its been a long time since I ever worked.  I am not sure when if ever if I am going to work again in any kind of job.  I need to work on my communication skill, and learn how to interact and socialize with other well before planning on getting a job again.

I guess how I turned out a quite a failure in life is somewhat my mom\'s fault.  Her negligences raising her kids, she can be quite selfish, the wrong decisions she made for me, putting her kids down, she can be quite demanding...etc...

Aw hell...paul, now yer makin\' me feel bad,...just so you know i was laughing at LIC\'s comment,...not at you...:thumb:....and i know it\'s easy sayin\' this from the outside lookin\' in, but paul,...you gotta somehow build up your self-confidence,....you gotta somehow dig yourself outta that dark pit that seems like you\'re never going to be able to get out of....do you have other brothers and sisters to talk to or maybe other relatives?

I don\'t think it\'s safe to say you\'re a failure yet,..as i\'m assuming you\'re still fairly young, but prolonged depression and self doubt can really take a toll on one\'s mental. Do you have any people\'s that you can maybe chill or hang out with? or maybe some type or recreational activity?.... you still have time to turn it around, that said tho,..if you\'re constantly around negatvity and negative people, well that can make the process that much harder and that\'s only if you really are surrounded by negative folk.

I mean i know we laugh and joke in here, but it\'s really not cool to hear people put themselves down the way you do,....if you\'re too young to leave the crib *which i\'m assuming you are*, then the best i can suggest is to be more active in other activities or stuff that you like to do......you say your mom\'s put you down and talks negatively towards you, but sometimes(and i don\'t know for sure if this is your case) but parents give what i call tough love to their kids, and maybe they say things that you may not like, but deep down they are doing it to get you motivated to be a better person than they ever where,....in those types of situations they are doing it in your best interest....but again i really don\'t know what the situation is,..the bottom line is that you need to find a way outta that rut you\'re in....

definitely agree here.  I need to find a way outta this mess.  Embarrassingly yes, I am struggling with my life.  But I been doing better lately.  Just hope I get well soon...its been years, and I am still not totally stable yet...

# 5 i\'ve kind of bent the truth on. i mean its a retail pet store so it\'s impossible to do everything on your plate between customers and cleaning

Nah you dont suck. It was just luck. The more you believe you suck the more you will look like you do. Try to ignore what your mother has done to you or anyone else and stand on your feet. You will run into many disappointments but you will can achieve a lot.

Do you have any health problem btw? Because you said something about not being in shape

You\'re 23? You are a single year younger than me? I thought you was like 14 or something.

Weird.

At this point, I don\'t know what to say, other than.
