How the hell do I embed this shit?
I don\'t know about anyone else, but this bothers me. We have for nearly 250 years spoken english as our national language, although we don\'t have an official language like most nations do. I don\'t think we shouldn\'t strive to learn other languages to better our selves. I\'m just tired of walking in to a hospital where there has to be Spanish and English on the walls for warnings and labels. Everything should be in English imo. I think if Obama had worded this better it wouldn\'t be so bad, but why should I have to learn Spanish so I can speak to illegal immigrants who are painting my walls.

It is only realistic. More and more spanish people are coming every single day and they are having children. It all only makes sense for this country to end up having it be a mandatory thing for children to also learn Spanish.

Why not have it mandatory for the immigrants to learn English, before they come over her at their expense and not mine? Your taxes and everyone\'s taxes go towards funding ESL(English as Second Language) and other programs for people who are not English speaking.

first of all, your embedded video doesn\'t work. 2nd of all, I agree that English is the official primary language in America. 3rd of all, first generation immigrants that come to America from other countries can keep their native language, and let their American born kids learn English in school. Assimilation in the work there. Of course, the first generation american born kids will know both their ancestry language to interact with their parents native tongue and relative and the American english language to interact with the american society.
I believe this has been the case for hundred of years where other European countries that are not English come to America they don\'t speak English. They adapt to the American lifestyle, but still kept their ancestry lifestyle. Until their later generation American born kids assimilate and adapt more to the American lifestyle than their parents were. and eventually 2nd and 3rd generation american born kids just spoke english like their parents did. and in this case, English is their primary and only English that they know of. where a few know or learn both their ancestry language and the American English language.
So, the point I am trying to make is English should be the only mandatory language requires not just all American born kids, but immigrant kids under the age of 18 to learn in school. And Spanish and other languages should be optional just how it is now so the kids can decide if they want to learn another secondary or 3rd languages or not. That\'s just my opinion there.

I think one of the reasons it could so that you as locals you would understand what they are saying in their own language.
Having spanish-speaking workers in the US that can speak two languages while you cant understand what they are saying in their own language, could put you in a disadvantage.
A second reason which I think is more possible is that, teaching Spanish in schools I guess could be more productive and easier to implement than trying to teach English to many of the Spanish speaking immigrants, many of which are looking for any job opportunity just to survive while anything else is secondary for them.
Think about it. Many come to the US and are hired to "back office" jobs immediately, especially the cheap workers for cost efficiency. The cost to teach them English burdens the business that hires them because they wont necessarily go to school and try to learn English in their "free time". So they prefer having supervisors and American employees that can speak Spanish to manage and communicate with them from the beginning instead.
Now, in the "front office" if they are hiring Spanish-speaking workers thats definitely an area where English is mandatory considering that the first language in the US is English.
I am not sure if these are the reasons, they are just wild guesses but if they are then I wonder how much corporate goals and concerns could be involved in the decision.

Heaven forbid we try to learn another language. Just because half the world bends over backwards to teach english as a second language doesn\'t mean we shouldn\'t try to learn one ourselves, especially since its so prevalent in our country. Should immigrants learn english? sure. Would it be beneficial if we spoke spanish? Definitely. Whats the problem again?

im in the midst of learning italian..ill have more time with summer school done. I know i should be spending my time on spanish to help my career but if its not interesting me, then ill probably flake out. italian on the other hand i\'ve been wanting to learn and plan on going after i graduate
but yea..it\'s kids. make them learn it while they can, especially when theyre young and are like sponges. My mom teaches 1st grade in a poor neighborhood where some of her students dont know any english. by the time theyre out of her class they can speak with no accent.

I agree 100%... trust when you cats from the younger set finally go out on your own and look for jobs,..especially if you\'re in the medical field as my wife is in...*she\'s a nurse*...on almost every job application she\'s applied for before we moved to georgia stated..."applicant must be bilingual(spel)"....or "applicant must be able to speak spanish"....it\'s just the way it is now....you\'re not going to see applicant must speak french or applicant must speak german....with spanish basically being the other dominant language in the nation, it only makes sense.
Now i do believe that first and foremost english is and should be the official language of the land, and i didn\'t hear him say anything along the lines of that spanish should be the official language....it should be noted tho, that both Obama & McCain have been catering to the latino vote for the past week,..so while i do feel what Obama is saying is indeed true,..*our kids really can only benefit from it*....i think he was kind of kissin\' up to tha latino\'s there...;)
But i do feel that more pressure should be applied for latino\'s to learn english if they are here, rather than for the average american to be forced to speak spanish,..and i only say that because,..if you go to their country, or any other country, they are not going to bend over backwards to try and learn english,...you have to step up and learn the language of the land you\'re in...

Fuck Spanish. Why should it be required? I am all for learning another language, but what happened to the choices we had in high school (speaking to us older folks) of German, Spanish, French and Latin?
Now it seems Spanish is the only other language offered. I have no desire to learn Spanish, I have no desire to go to Mexico or anywhere Spanish is spoken and I resent that my children are forced to learn Spanish when it has nothing to do with our heritage.
As to what Paul was blathering about in the other thread regarding nationality, I am of German and English ancestry and I would like my children to have a choice to what 2nd language they want to learn.
BTW English IS the language of diplomacy.

Do people in Mexico fucking bend over backwards to speak English for me? So because people come over here illegally, my children should learn to speak Spanish? That just sounds like liberal bullshit, again as I stated I\'m all for learning other languages as I stated above in my post which appeared to be ignored, but just because "thats the way it is" doesn\'t mean thats the way it should be. Obama only said that to appease the the mexicans that can vote and who are sympathetic to the illegals over here with 15 anchor babies.

I understand if you\'re a McCain fan, but don\'t get it twisted,..both Obama & McCain are catering to the latino vote...

Basically a play off what clips said...
I would think that McCain supporting a form of amnesty for all illegals currently in this country would be a big sticking point for republicans? I guess not...?
Both sides are trying to woo the latino vote... and of course people are gonna go off on the nominee they are trying to demonize. :fighting: even if their stances are similar

Well it cant be necessarily liberal bs. It could be because the market absorbs and wants to absorb cheap labor, and that cheap labor happens to be largely very poor Spanish speaking (illegal or legal) immigrants. As a result it creates the need of communication. It is easier to make English-speaking Americans learn Spanish while they are young in School than try to force poor and older in age Spanish speaking immigrants learn English which may or may not go to school.
The way I see it is that Politicians know of some issues but are waiting for the right time to make suggestions like for example during election periods. In such a case they will present them in a way that they make a good impression to gain votes (latino votes) while the genuine purpose is different (edit: corporate needs, market, labor management and social reasons).

Please provide me a quote where he said all children should be required to learn spanish, or did you just close the video after he said spanish?
mjps, half the world, maybe not mexico, but most of the world, learns english as a second language. It just comes off as arrogant that we as a nation are so against learning something new. And besides, its just a language, if in 200 years we\'re all speaking spanish, I could give a rats ass.
-
Phil I didn\'t say Obama required it, the Public Schools are now requiring it. They have been for awhile. You no longer get choices like you once did regarding languages.
Something new? Spanish - Mexican Style? Gutter language. That is nothing new. You would be a poster child for Aztlan movement.

i think teaching french, german, latin in school is a waste of time and resources. Half the kids in high school will not be going on to college and need to prepared for the real world now. what the fuck are the going to do with the ability to speak Latin other than be able to sound like a douche bag. learning Spanish now will help them get a better job when they\'re done with school. it only makes sense. if you wanna teach your kids German cause you family is from there fine but do it on your own time. the schools need to be focusing on the working world reality and the reality is that if there are 2 equally qualified employees but one speaks spanish as a second language and the other speaks french they will give the job to the spanish speaking one regardless of how much buisness the company does with spanish speaking customers or employees
-
Learning Latin and other languages can make them better linguists in general and open the door to a whole other world of possibilities, if the students chose to follow those routes.
-
i would think learning spanish or chinese would open a whole lot more doors then latin. it should not be the job of secondary school to make our kids into scholars it should be to prepare them for life outside their parents home
save that latin bullshit for college latin is worthless in the real world

Why even teach a foreign language when most can\'t even master the English language.
People should have choices and not be forced to take Spanish because it may get them a better job. How many jobs are there now that require you to know Spanish and English?

too many but thats not the point
its what the job market warrants and you cant control that

Yeah..i think the learning of spanish is kinda like gas prices...people used to say that when gas prices hit $3.00 they would stop driving their cars,..but the market dictates otherwise,...so people are forced to adjust....mind you i\'m not sayin\' that it\'s right,..it\'s just the way it is or the way it is becoming...but like i stated earlier my wife really sees this thing first hand with her being a nurse,....being bilingual may not be a qualification for every job, but in certain fields i think you will find it\'s an absolute must....

When I ran the shipping department for a place down here, one of my bosses told me that I must hire bilingual ppl b/c 95% of the rest of the workers spoke spanish. These were just warehouse rats. I couldnt believe that ppl needed to know spanish just to make $7.50 h/r
The daily announcements were all made in spanish and sometimes in english if they remembered to. I thought my ass was working in Cuba for a while.
