So when will the players come down in price?

Good prices. Why pay the same price for blurry DVD when you can get the HD version for the same price?

The cheapest one is $200 but the standalone that I\'d recommend is $100 more (Sony BDP-S350).  Of course the PS3 is still the best due to firmware upgradability but you may have to wait til Xmas before it dips below $300.

PS3 BR drive boots up fastest (well, as far as I know).

I find it strange that the PS3 is actually better as a blue ray player then the stand alone version.  Odd.

Amazon has always been the cheapest place to get Blu Ray. Stores like Best Buy and Wal-Mart on the other hand are always hovering around the $30 dollar price range.

amazon has been worse since hd-dvd left though. whenever they have \'buy two get one free\' they jack up the prices so it\'s pretty close to buying three. and i havent seen \'buy one get one free\' for a while

but the prices are still decent. I have 5 BR\'s and havent spent over $18 on one.

One of the best things about PS3 Blue Ray is that they can update the HDCP standard up to 1.3 which is what it is now because it has a hard drive.  In order to be 1.3 it needs a hard drive which the older players don\'t have.

vid,

i think you are wrong there.  PS3 HDMI has always been v1.3 from the beginning since 2006.  HDCP is just a copy protection that I doubt needed much firmware revision, or any at all.

Unless you are talking about Profile then PS3 is firmware upgradeable thanks to its Ethernet connection.  Originally, PS3 profile was 1.0 back in 2006.  PS3 was really fast to update to Profile 1.1 as soon as it becomes available in late 2007.  Then in April 2008, when Profile 2 was just recently announced, PS3 update it to Profile 2 for firmware upgrade.  You can say part of this firmware upgrade is possible thanks to built in Hard Disk Drive.  Man, I was surprised to see how fast Sony update their firmwares.  Its amazing to see such dedication and the time Sony spends implementing these firmwares.

About any other stand-a-lone Blu Ray Players.  I think most of them back in 2006 has the older HDMI v1.2 or v1.1 versions, unlike PS3 which has the v1.3 versions.  Which mean, you won\'t get the higher 10.2 Gbps speed, but instead the lower 5 Gbps speed.  And you won\'t get the deep color, and x.v. color, or the 120 Hz supports, nor the newer lossless audio codecs like Dolby True HD and DTS HDMA.  But that\'s not really that important though.

Also, most of the Blu Ray Players in 2006 can\'t upgrade to later Profile like 1.1 and 2.  Unlike PS3 because it doesn\'t have an internal memory storage like a HDD, memory card drive, or RAM.   I think Profile 1.1 requires at least 64 MBytes while Profile 2 requires at least 256 Mbytes of memory storage.  Some don\'t even have an ethernet connection, meaning if you want to upgrade the firmware, you have to do it by disc that you either downloaded from the internet and burnt to disc or got one from the manufacturer.

Even some 2007 and a few 2008 Blu Ray Players still doesn\'t have an ethernet connection, so if you want to upgrade the firmware.  You need to do it by disc.

Last but not least, the PS3 still to this day has the fastest load up time and disc boot up because it acts like a high end computer that uses 3.2 GHz CPU power, and a powerful GPU too for video processing.

While Blu Ray Players aren\'t like computer, so it takes longer to boot up.  Of course, the load time has been reduce drastically, but still slow compares to PS3.

yeah.  too much to read.  Point is PS3 is far more upgradeable than current DVD players.  Until the players start coming with hard drives which the new interactivity wants.

oh, one more thing.  any standalone blu ray players doesn\'t need the HDD to upgrade to profile 2.  It can either be a memory card with at least 256 Mbytes or higher, or an internal memory storage like a RAM would do.  1 Gbytes is more preferable.

But you are right thought about PS3 being flexible.

Why do I need memory in a player? Can\'t I just put the damn disk in without having to worry about upgrading the fricking thing?

Short answer is yes.  You can and watch the core and important part of it which is the movie and the audio.

i need to word things more carefully.  I meant to say that in order to take advantage of Profile 2, you need at least 256 Mbytes of memory storage if i recalled correctly.  1 Gbytes is more preferable i think.  You can upgrade without the need of a memory storage, but to take advantage of profile 1.1 and profile 2,  you need at least 64 Mbytes to 256 Mbytes for Java interactivity, picture in picture, and multi audio stream, internet download for newer features of the disc.

Honestly, these aren\'t really important since in general we just watch movies and we could careless about those features as they are just "extra".  So, you don\'t need to worry about it if your blu ray player is just profile 1.0.

i think picture in picture is like while the movie is playing, you can turn on another video box process alongside the movie you are watching simultaneously and the video box could be the directors, actors, etc.  doing commentaries about this scenes or that scenes of the movie. So are the audio streams of the movie you are watching and another audio stream of the commentary, both of which are being process simultaneously for disc that implemented it.

Since I haven\'t own a ps3 or blu ray player yet, so i haven\'t really seen that in person to see how it works though.

Well...it\'s like i\'ve always stated....the leap really isn\'t that big between blu-ray & regular dvd\'s...i\'m honestly perfectly happy with dvd\'s,..there really was no need to upgrade to blu-ray...but the impact was much greater felt with the transistion from vhs to dvd. Dvd\'s will always keep their clarity, and you can still get a decent picture from them.

It\'s hard to go back to DVD once you\'ve been watching BR on an HD TV.

Unless you\'re half blind. It\'d be a moot point then.

That it is...

Since I got an HDTV I really only watch the HD channels, (except for adult swim) and since I got a PS3 I only watch Blu-Ray movies.

I didn\'t even really decide to do this... It just... Happened.

yeah.  i guess for the consumers that couldn\'t see a high jump from dvd to blu ray or any hd channels broadcasts, i guess they didn\'t hook up the right video connections or select the right resolution or still using standard tv instead of hdtv.  Once they get everything properly setup, the difference between dvd and blu ray is huge.

I can see a big diference between dvd and ota hd broadcast on my hdtv.  And I could only imagine blu ray will looks better than hd broadcast.

Truth. The Discovery version is not as sharp. But still way better than DVD.
