overrated, just as I thought it might be.

the long term potential is there for it to be a good thing, but right now, there\'s not much to do.

I had a couple of games of pool and a game of bowling, and had a look around the different areas, but there wasn\'t a lot to be done.

when open beta hits, I get the feeling a lot of people who were waiting with baited anticipation for it might just be quite disappointed.

one feature that shows promise, is the clubhouse addition, could be useful for a place like this where members want to meet up before joining a game together.

also, saw my first funny thing today.

I was in the bowling alley, and as I entered, there was this big crowd in the middle, I walked over and everyone was dancing. it was a load of guys dancing round this one chick.

they were at it for about 5 minutes bugging her asking her to add them to her friends list, then the chick in the middle said something like...

"this is amazing, you\'re a guy and no one will give you the time of day, but give yourself a chicks avatar and ask if anyone wants to dance, and you\'ve instantly got a hundred randy virgins climbing all over you vying for attention"

it was a bloke all along, as soon as the penny dropped, they all started disappearing.

:)

PlayStation fiends finally get a second life

Escape the relatives this Christmas by losing yourself in Sony’s long-awaited virtual world

Quote

The annual battle of the consoles that takes place every Christmas will heat up this week when Sony launches its own version of Second Life for the PlayStation 3. The new service, called PlayStation Home, will allow players to create an online “virtual life” and interact with other players in a make-believe world.

Sony hopes to cash in on the massive success of Second Life, which claims to have 15m registered players around the world — albeit that the highest number active at any one time is about 76,000. It is, however, available only on a computer rather than a games console. To try Home, which is slated for release in the next 10 days, players must download a piece of free software from Sony’s PlayStation store onto their own PS3.

From here they must create their own character, known as an avatar; they are then free to explore Sony’s virtual lands complete with shops, apartments and cinemas. They can also meet and interact with other avatars from around the world, exchange ideas and play mini-games such as chess or 10-pin bowling. Avatars can dance together or blow each other kisses but, in case you’re wondering, interaction will fall short of full-on sex, a popular option for many Second Life fans.

Sony has high hopes of Home becoming a digital clubhouse where those with time on their hands can let their avatars hang out together online. Most of the service’s initial features will be free, and you are given a harbourside apartment that you can furnish as you choose. If you want to embellish your virtual home with fancy furniture or bling up your avatar with posh clothing, this will inevitably cost real money. For example, a pair of jeans will cost about 85p and a flash apartment will cost about £4. This will be paid for via PlayStation’s online store.

Kids are having sex in Second Life? That seems pretty creepy and inappropriate, doesn\'t it? Heh. Good for them.

looks like you cats will be able to get into HOME tomorrow, heard a rumour open beta is rolling out, they seem to be talking about it on the official forums.

I predict 2 things happening

1. Servers will go down in the blink of an eye leaving everyone frustrated.
2. when they come back up and people get to try things out, there are going to be shit loads of users who are disappointed with the experience.

well it\'s official
http://blog.us.playstation.com/2008/12/10/playstation-home-open-beta-launches-tomorrow/

I \'m pretty sure most of the stuff from home will be useless.  With time, as more game support it this will become a great thing for PSN

walked around for a few minutes.  Couldn\'t get in on bowling and played some pool a couple times.  Pretty amazing that it took them that long of delays and there is virtually nothing to do.  The theater is pretty cool, but it\'s just a trailer.

yup, this is pretty featureless atm.. the game launching feature will be good once more game support it. Since most of the furniture stuff and wearable seem like you need to spend real life money, I hope that trophies will earn you some "privilege" item. Let\'s say you complete Uncharted to 100%, would ne nice to have an uncharted t-shirt added to your wardrobe

yeah, that\'s pretty much how I\'d sum up home right now.

every time I sit down, I get some fuckwit come up and thrust his groin in my face

So it\'s almost like real life.

I actually got on a bowling lane the other day.  very shocked.

I also played pool, but if the other dude leaves the game starts over and you can\'t even practice because if someone comes in it resets.  So it pretty much blows butt nuggets.

yeah, that\'s one of the things they need to nail down, twats quitting the game just as you\'re about to win. I\'ve had that happen to me.

I think rather than have the arcades, pool and bowling sections in 1 building, have seperate buldings for each, I can\'t see why there can\'t be a bowling alley and a pool hall seperately.

also, if you go in and find the bowling lanes are all full, just leave and enter the bwoling alley again, you should get put in on a different server and with any luck, there will be some free lanes.

that\'s what I do when everything is occupied.

surprised they charge for all the furniture.  I figured it would be based on trophies and game play.  I mean as anyone seriously going to buy this shit?

Someone needs to make a clubhouse though.

that would be a good idea, but that\'s gone down the same route as furniture and clothing, you have to buy it, which I sure as hell am not doing.

and what\'s worse, is I heard a rumour that from march onwards, to keep hold of it, the owner would need to pay a monthly fee.

not sure if that\'s true though, just one of many rumours I have heard.

Screens and info for new Café Home area :

Quote

Here are the first shots of the Café, a new area coming to Home in the not-too-distant future.

Sure, it all looks very suave, but it\'s also a little void activity. But Sony says it\'s early days, and stuff can be added at the request of the community.

"As with all things in Home, the cafe evolves over time. Remember, we\'re in BETA," said a Home manager on the official PS forums.

"It is a public space, for everyone\'s enjoyment. Give it a spin, give us feedback, and watch it grow. We encourage you to actively participate in this BETA version of Home.

"While specific events will be hosted in the Cafe, in the end it will be used for all the same purposes every other space in Home is - socializing with other PS3 users. That\'s what Home is about. But that\'s not to say that we can\'t turn it into something different if that is what the community calls for. Ah, the joys of being in BETA..." said the rep.

The café is currently only live in the Japanese and Hong Kong versions of Home, its arrival in the west yet to be confirmed. We\'re checking with Sony now.

I went to check out the GH space.

IMO, it\'s groing quickly and the dev are putting something together. It\'s not for everybody.. but it\'s still a good free online feature for the PS3
