Ouch.
-
No surprises here.
-
nope
but i would disagree with their statement saying you dont see a difference in blu ray if the tv is smaller than 50"..mines 42" and i will never pay 10 bucks less for the dvd version of a movie
-
Its interesting that I now realized the Wii is more expensive than the cheaper XBOX360 but sells more than 360. Really surprising too. Its has been over 2 years and Wii hasn\'t had a price cut at all but still sells nevertheless. I guess since consumers are still buying it, they continue to sell at that price until the demand is really declining. A smart business move from Nintendo.
I guess the average consumers don\'t know the Wii has last generation graphic performance, and cannot support High Def. I think they are sold into the hype of the unique and different game play there.
Yeah, I agree that article is wrong saying you won\'t notice a different between HD and SD on display smaller than 50". Even on a 30", you can still see a different between HD and SD...it\'s mostly depends on how far away you sit from the screen.
-
you new to this \'casual gamer\' demographic er something?
theyre going to fuck up my hobby
-
not sure what you are asking but i am just surprised the Wii still sell like hotcakes even without a price cut in 2 years. You would thought consumers would get the cheaper 360 over the Wii, but the Wii still sells better than its competitors regardless...lol...
-
because theyre casual gamers. stupid stuff like the xbox\'s crazy complex controls with more than 3 buttons and games like gears makes the 360 not even cross their mind..which means MS/Sony is going to have to change to cator to that demographic since it racks in so much money..hence fucking up my hobby
-
i see. i think this is a first in history that a console to still sells well even without a price cut in over 2 years. I always thought the biggest reason why 360 or ps3 doesn\'t sells as high as the wii is the cost. Now, it seems like that\'s not the case here, lol.
-
They should just focus on ps4.
-
When he wrote
The differences between Blu-Ray and DVD are hard to see on a TV less than 50".
I realized this guy is a complete idiot.
-
Meh..the ps3 will be fine...sure it\'s not the heavyweight it once was during the ps2 era, but games like metal gear, unchartered, heavy rain, and big blockbuster crossovers like resident evil 5, will keep it a solid competitor.
Those clowns like time magazine and other entities that normally don\'t cover console gaming usually end up not knowing what the f**k they are talking about.

To put things in perspective, the Gamecube was always the cheapest console of last generation and it was always in third place.
-
I like that they say "the problem isn\'t the recession, it\'s the ps3" and their first reason why the system is flopping is "the recession."
Woo.

I\'ve said it before and I\'ll say it again.......a lot of the public truly feels that way. I\'m not saying they\'re right, just saying that\'s how it is.
I like that they say "the problem isn\'t the recession, it\'s the ps3" and their first reason why the system is flopping is "the recession."
Like you said, he stated in the opening it\'s the PS3 not the recession. Then in his first reason he pointed to the price of the PS3 as why price-conscious buyers aren\'t going after it, not the recession itself. No contradiction there.
-

I know, but the Gamecube don\'t have lots of killer games like PS2 had back then. Most of Gamecube games back then are kiddish and the graphic performance between the 3 consoles are small compare Wii to PS3/360. Now, the Wii which has last generation graphic and mostly kiddish games sells more than PS3 or 360 that has this generation graphic...
Viper is right, casual gamers didn\'t know Wii is last generation graphic, and they are sold into the unique game play like the controller and a weight machine for push up or something...lol.

People who\'ve been to my place and saw the BR movies I was playing....folks like my parents and their old friends....can easily see how much better it is than their analog players. If they\'re playing the BR players on their basic red/white/yellow jack...then there\'s their problem.
-
Maybe if Blu Ray players start to ship with component or HDMI cable included with an attention note saying that to get the best picture quality on your hdtv, use either component or HDMI and select HD resolution or something.
-

I\'m a sales rep for Panasonic and customers say it to me all the time while I\'m in stores, that\'s while looking at it setup on a tv. Obviously not everyone is this way but a lot of people are and some think it\'s better but not by that much.
-
doesnt really justify writing an opinion as a fact in the article
-
It doesn\'t help that the PS3 is a fugly piece of hardware.
I know they\'ve been cutting the price since it came out, but $400 is still a lot for the average consumer to be shelling out - especially when their competitors have entry level models going for $200 and $250 respectively.
Sony needs to bite the bullet, the PS3 needs a redesign and a price cut ASAP.
-
Yeah..i agree that sony definitely needs a price cut on the ps3...and as i\'ve mentioned before, i\'m still baffled that the ps2 isn\'t at least $99.00 already. Why they\'re holdin\' out is beyond my reasoning....i understand that they are already takin\' a loss on the ps3, but $400.00 is still steep in any economy.
-

The problem with that is it puts the other stand alone Blu-Ray players at a loss. They\'re still at $250 (cheapest and that\'s only for a huge sale) or more.
If the PS3 dropped to $250, why would anyone buy a standalone player? PS3 are just as good, if not better than those.
-

The avg consumer doesn\'t know any better. They see the PS3 as a gaming system that can play BR\'s on the site, and they\'d have to purchase a remote separately.
I love my PS3 but it\'s not for everyone. Sony needs to focus resources on marketing, 2nd party games, and creating tools to make it easier for developers to code their nuts off.
-
The reason I haven\'t purchased a PS3 is because I already have a X360, and I can\'t justify paying $400 for another console when so many games are released for both platforms.
I would like to have a blu ray player, and yes I can certainly tell the difference, but it\'s not worth $400 to me. Maybe if stand-alone blu ray players ever drop to $100 - $150, I will buy one.
For me the price really is the problem. There\'s a statistical sample of 1.
-
Most people do not believe there is a big enough difference in HI-DEF and standard def. I know where I am from, most are perfectly content with DVDs and when I mention HI-DEF they simply shrug it off as a waste of money.
With that said, my PS3 is only a blu-ray player. I own one game (Rachet).
-
you like ratchet (and i assume like platformers) and dont have littlebigplanet?
bich u crazy..
-
fuck i hate this anti cap lock shit DA SALES DON\'T LIE
-
you like ratchet (and i assume like platformers) and dont have littlebigplanet?
bich u crazy..
Love Rachet, but LBP looks like complete shit. Not saying it is shit, but from what I\'ve saw, it looks like a shit infested snooze fest, therefor I never bothered to give it a shot.
Maybe I should try it.
-
im not really into platformers (last one i played regularly was the first crash bandicoot) and im enjoying it. would definitly get a lot more out of it if i were creative though. i dont even have the gumption to make a costume let alone make a level
but i got it for 40 bucks, so it was definitly worth that price. 60 bucks on the other hand...probably not so much
if you\'re not going to play online/with other people or are creative, id wait for a discount (amazon\'s had it for 40 bucks a couple times)

My library isn\'t large but MGS4 was a great game, and I love the MLB the show series.
-
MGS4 was far from a great game. There is a reason it has made every single " dissapointment of 2008" list. I bought it and took it back the next day. It was full of Kojami yanking it and trying to be a director, instead of actual gameplay.
-
LIC is on the top of my idiot gamers list.
-
I got bored of the MGS4 single player after about an hour of playing it (read: 15 minutes of me actually controlling the character); HOWEVER, I hear the multiplayer kicks 8 different kinds of ass. I just can\'t exactly afford to be buying games since my company more or less just folded yesterday (luckily i go back to school in a week).
-
LIC is on the top of my idiot gamers list.
And I really don\'t give a damn.
The game sucked. It was cinema after cinema. That\'s not a game. It\'s just Kojima jacking off to himself. It is the only game that I ever bought that made me actually want to burn the game. It was just complete and total trash and Kojima should be ran out of the industry for producing such complete shit.
-

^ Proof of idiocy right there, emo boy.
Where\'s your proof? All I see is opinions.
What I love to see is all these dorks try and excuse a crappy storyline (see: all MGS\'s). It\'s a crappy story and Kojima was given way to much control. He\'s always stated he wanted to be a film director, but failed at it. So what happens? Konami lets him take a franchise and go crazy with it. At best, MGS(1) was a decent game, but after that the franchise has just spiraled downwards. It\'s only because a select group of total asshats and dorks, help to excuse Kojami\'s self wanking that this franchise has stayed afloat.
Keep trolling, G. It\'s all your good at.
-
Yes, the cinema scenes were long and numerous and at times boring, but if we\'re talking exclusively about gameplay it was outstanding.
Sony has a lot of fixing to do, but they\'re not going away. They are not going to "SEGA" their hardware.
Symptoms of a company going in the shitter include: releasing ridiculous peripherals to extend the life of your console (32x/Sega CD), changing the release date of a system so that you can beat another to the market and in effect alienating all of your third party developers (Saturn), releasing another console shortly thereafter to compensate for your mistakes (Dreamcast).
Yes, I know I\'m bashing Sega, but it was to illustrate a point that although sales aren\'t great Sony is not diverging from its original business plan. They are not making drastic changes to try and fix things. It\'s called riding the wave, and they\'re doing it.
-
A long boring cinema is enough to ruin a game.
-
skip movie?
-
Skip the movie and ignore the story line?
Brilliant. Skip most the game, have no clue what is going on and enjoy the rest.
It\'s retarded suggestions such as that, that have killed games. We\'ve turned them into interactive movies at best and that is a piss poor way to do games. The best games are ones that can blend story / humor in with gameplay. A good example on the PS3 is Rachet and Clank. It has story and humor and does not need a 90 minute cinema. There are plenty of great games that don\'t take forever to tell such a piss poor story.
-

While I did enjoy MGS4... I couldn\'t agree more with this.
And the dialogue was just horrible. Maybe something lost in translation but seriously all solid snake ever did was repeat what someone said to him as a question. ALL... Game.... Long.
ocelot: its metal gear!
snake: metal gear?
ocelot: metal gear is back!
snake: its back?
ocelot: we have do go so some stuff!
snake: some stuff?
That\'s my MGS4 25min cut scene.
-
That\'s another thing that\'s good about Fallout 3.
ZERO movies / cutscenes.
The closest thing it has is the dialogue sections that set up the quests. At least you have a little bit of control over those by choosing what questions to ask.
-
If only it were a little longer.
-

And that is exactly my problem with the MGS series. Kojima can be a good game when he remembers that he is making a game, not some kind of movie. Instead, he wants to makes games that are long for no other reason, than they have 90 minute cut scenes that could be cut down in no time.
As talented as Kojima is, he really needs someone above him to cut his ideas down.]
I need to give Fallout 3 another shot. I lost interest in it quickly, which I find odd, because I loved Oblivion. Been playing a lot of WOTLK and Dead Space.

LIC = resident troll
I rarely sound off over other\'s opinions. But when I play your game, you call me a troll? Please.
-
YOU are trolling, just like you had to troll in the Uncharted thread. I never once posted in it, until you started trolling and trying to throw insults out at me for no fucking good reason.
Just like I wasn\'t trolling in this thread. We were having a perfectly civil discussion until you joined in and spouted your normal garbage. No one was insulting anyone, no one was bashing anything really. We were simply discussing and then, because someone disagrees with you, you have to chime in and call me an idiot.
You\'re the one trolling, bud.
I\'m moving on tho.
MGS4 sucked.
BAH!
-
Hmmm...i admit the cutscenes where a bit long...some of those mission briefings were unbearable...i actually dosed off for about 2-3 minutes during one and when i woke up the cutscene was STILL playing!! :p. Nobody at konami checked kojima for editing...the game defintely needed some as far as the cutscenes were concerned.
And i can understand trying to tell a story, but some of kojima\'s stuff was unecessary. That said, i did enjoy the gameplay....to me the game performed incredibly well in that aspect...and i loved how during the missions you could practically go into any building or stay at ground level to achieve your objective. The only real knock against the game is the cutscenes, but even then i really didn\'t mind them, because i do like a game that tries to tell a story, but some of the stuff in mgs4 could\'ve been edited out.
-
I will no longer be spooning LIC. He can sleep alone.
He\'ll come crawling back....with an O face.
-
Meh, MLB 09 should be out in a couple months as well as Resident Evil 5. Enough for me to warrant owning the system. I use it primarily to play bluray movies anyway.
-
People play baseball games?
-
I LOVE baseball games!
-
i havent heard jack about mlb 09..its not even on any gaming sites
mlb 08 demo was pretty good, but the stiff animations kind of killed the experience for me..if 2k9 fixes lag issues and lowers the homerun rates/amazing catches then im leaning towards getting that (if i buy a baseball game this year)
2k7 definitly had its flaws but it was still fun to play. the swing stick is tough to use but it\'s alot more gratifieing to get a hit with than just hitting a button

^^ Question isn\'t which place they\'re in, but is their gaming division healthy? Can the market support 3 gaming options? Will Home change everything? So many questions my head\'s gonna splode!!
-
Home wont change a single thing.
-
nope. every jackass, from every genre, of every game is going to be in home..that combined with there being nothing to do besides dinky stuff like pool and having to pay for too many things..poopski\'s
if they combined a way to use trophies and having points as money, then I think it could go places. but theyre too dumb to do something like making points an incentive to get.
-
Home = too little, too late.
-
Point taken, but the other questions still remain. There are only 3 solid competitors in videogames, and it\'s a billion-dollar industry. What other market are there only 3 choices?
Growth of gaming in 2007 far outpaces movies, music (http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20080124-growth-of-gaming-in-2007-far-outpaces-movies-music.html)
-
The Wii has a hold on a part of the market that neither MS or Sony is going for, so don\'t really count Nintendo as part of that.
Its more just Sony and MS battling it out.
-
Don\'t forget Sony is getting revenues from movies too, especially blu-rays, and that factor hasn\'t been left out.

There are plenty of competitors if you look at the software developers and publishers. You\'re talking about proprietary hardware which is different.
That\'s like how there were three competing DVD machines and we couldn\'t support that so all HD-DVD players became obsolete.
Three is not a small number in this case.
To allow for more competitors, you\'d have to let other companies create consoles that could play Nintendo Wii games or Xbox 360 games, then count those as competing companies, too.
