A quick note here:
...Too much homework also means that kids miss out on active playtime, essential for learning social skills, proper brain development, and warding off childhood obesity...

I agree that many homework nowadays are unnecessary long and could worn out the kids life and could causes a lot of development problems growing up.

Logan has homework every night, but it doesn\'t take long to do and he certainly has plenty of time to play outside before he does it.
-
my second grader has about half an hour each night. 20mins of reading plus 10mins of math or spelling. He hates it but i think thats about right. Over an hour in high school is too much. Alot of kids i went to high school with including myself had after school jobs which would have made it impossible to do 4 hours a night
-
Half an hour a night sounds acceptable to me for a little kid. I spose a high school kid would probably need more cause they have to prepare for college, where they will get 1,000 hours a night.
But hey, does high school REALLY prepare anyone for college?
-
eh..not really, lol. its just a stepping stone. in grade school they make high school sound insanely different and more difficult...same exact tone going from high school to college..but its not different.
the only hard part about college is doing homework even though you dont turn it in most of the time (that killed me my first year) and time management. not saying that the subjects arent difficult, but i found geometry wayyy harder in high school than im finding stats and computer classes in college
no idea whats normal for grade school, but 1-3 hours sounds about right for high school. projects make timing how long you\'re doing homework pretty impossible

And that\'s how it should be. When my kids come home, they make a snack, wash the dishes, clean up their room, fold any clothes that might need folding, do their homework, THEN they can go outside.

Haha...just keep in mind that my kids are a bit older.... 13, 12, 10, 4....my 4 year old is the only one that doesn\'t do the chores like that yet,..she tries, but she\'s not quite ready yet.

Load \'em up with homework once they hit high school. The only thing I\'d check is the amount of reading, since that really is a time sink. But, teach kids to start on the bus, work at home right after, work before bed, work in the morning before school. There\'s plenty of time to do schoolwork and still fit in a social life and/or job. Plus, there\'s weekends and summer break.
I remember being in school and talking about doing less homework. We also had the good angle that too many text books was hurting kids backs. It\'s just something kids complain about.
Seriously, get them a bag on wheels and teach them. Too many stupid people to back off the throttle.

Teach them the important stuff in high school I say.
Teach them how to pull out in time

No and in college I usually have an average of 1 hour of homework per night. Though when I have big tv/film production projects, I can be editing for hours. Most of my homework is reading though and its not that bad.
-
4-5 hours a night of homework for me. Average about 5 hours of class a day as well.
Used to do more, have gotten lazy recently.
-
^^^
That\'s crazy. Doubt you have much social life or fresh air and physical exercises eh?
-
I\'m awake 16-17 hours of the day at least. Gives me almost half the day to kill, just have to be good with time management. Its only when you add freelance to the mix that my social life dies.
-
But does those 4 to 5 hours of homework per day help you in real-life or when tests come?
What about time for yourself to relax like listening to music? internet? tv? videogames? hang out with friends, relatives, or families?
I went to Adult School to make up 3 remaining credits last year, and I think it would have been better if they have 10 - 15 minutes break in between the 3 hours of class time. But they don\'t have that, and I got tired sitting there doing classwork from reading and doing paperwork for 3 hours. There are a couple of time where I actually gotten sick and felt like vomiting.
It would have been better if they let us out for fresh air and break for about 10 minutes on each 1 hour to 1 hour 30 minutes of classwork. Maybe they didn\'t thought about it and no students make a suggestion about it.
I remember back in my senior year in Math class, I thought the amount of math questions required by the a teacher to do were a bit redudant. Like instead of doing about 30 questions the teacher requested, it could have been cut in half and do 15 instead. Like do the odd or even of the questions only. Because say like 1 - 6 are the same math problems, instead of doing all 6 questions, do the even only like 2, 4, and 6 of the same problems will cut back in half instead of doing all 6 questions which is redundant and unnecessary. Because the student knows how to solve the problem, doing all 6 is tiresome and waste of time. Then say 7 - 12 have the same math problems too, doing either the odd or even will be better. same with say like 13 - 20, 21 - 30 etc...
I remember my junior year were like that with my previous math teacher of a different school where she made us do only the odd or even only because she knows it\'s unnecessary. And I got mostly As and some Bs on the tests with doing half the questions on the homework.
I was afraid to ask my 2nd semester math teacher of my senior year if we could do only half problems because i don\'t like telling people what to do. But thinking thoroughly, it\'s us that do the homework. Not her. Its should be okay to ask as a suggestion. The interesting thing is, she only gives out the answers only the even problems for the class to grade. Maybe she knows its unnecessary to answer all 30 problems.

You mean like say cut out 90% of this paragraph because it\'s not only redundant, but you are saying the same thing.

Well think of school as a job. You work 9-10 hours a day. Join the club.

I guess. Still trying to shorten it.:D

So you don\'t have kids?
Not yet. Do you think being a parent makes you not want kids to have homework?
Why?
(Show your work.)

What do you mean? You work 8-9 hours on school and homework, I shot a tv show for ESPN yesterday for 12 hours and drove home afterwards for an hour. What\'s the difference? Besides a lot of money of course.

For starters, I wasn\'t complaining about how much time I put into class, nor was I trying to say my life was harder than someone with a job.
And yeah yeah, we know you make a lot of money, good for you.
