I was chatting to my wife about this a month or so back and then I heard something on the radio today that made me rethink it.
Why is it that we are calling him our first black president, when he\'s only half black? I mean if he was lighter in skin tone would he still be considered a black president? He\'s half white...
And another thought. Why is the fact that it\'s so incredible that a black person can get into office not racist? He\'s a person. Does it really matter if he\'s half white or white?
I just hope for the best and hope all of this ridiculous elation slows down a bit and people realize that things take time. But I have a feeling that all the motivated people that drove and walked forever to get to the lawn realize that they actually need to do something to make this world a better place. Not just say Rah Rah Rah when the pres waves.

on one hand, you have to recognize the significance. it really hasnt been that long since MLK..he couldve been alive today. not sure how to argue the half-black arguement, but it just seems petty to argue over something like that especially when you\'re argueing that it doesnt matter
but i\'ve been tired of this since the primaries. all you need is one sentence..but they have whole segments and 50 interviews with people saying the same thing over and over about it

I\'m just really glad the hype machine has been set from "super mega high" to "normal" and now he can actually be president.
-
Has someone hit the hype machine button? I haven\'t turned on the telli today.

Saying he\'s our first half-black president doesn\'t sound as good. For what people are trying to say, calling him half-black sounds like we\'re still not ready to have a black president.
It\'s not good P.R.
The media is all about ratings and if people will tune in to hear about our progress in becoming less racist as a nation, then it will continue to be repeated.
You ask why it\'s not racist that we point it out. That\'s not what being racist is. Noticing that the new president is black or half-black is not racist. It\'s a racial topic, but it\'s not mean or negative in any way, you\'re just talking about stats and trends and history. We could even talk about SLAVERY without being racist. So, this doesn\'t qualify either.
Back to your initial question, it also seems like socially we\'ve accepted calling mixed black/white people black. Even a person with really light skin could claim to be black with mixed parents. This is a good example of why "african american" is really a better term than just "black." Calling Obama our first president with African heritage would probably be more accurate than calling him our first black president.

i prefer to think of him as half white not half black

OK, but it\'s whether you think one or the other is the optimistic view that determines if you\'re racist. :)
-
1% rule. Blame whitey for that one.

so if i say i think he\'s half black i hate white people and if i say he\'s half white i hate black people?
-
Another thought I\'ll just throw in here.
If a Republican nominated a commerce secretary that didn\'t pay 35 grand worth of taxes, would the media tear him apart?
I mean heck, they ripped Palin apart because they thought her dresses were too expensive.

No, you can say either one. You just can\'t think one way is BETTER than the other.

cant because i\'d be racist or cant because i\'m not allowed

I would say so. The media tends to lean towards the left so if a Republican didn\'t pay his taxes, he\'d get reamed.
