Why the heck won\'t management hire a 2-person armed security crew for each ship in the Gulf of Aiden? A minuscule fee compared to paying out millions in ransom, plus time lost while their goods sit on the shore in Somalia. Seems simple to me anyway
-
I agree.... these cargo ships of developed nations need some type of security personnel on board if they know they are going to be travelling those waters....and arm their security people with grenade or missle launchers....there\'s no way these small time pirates with their weak weaponry should be takin\' over these mass ships.
-
If it was that easy, Im sure they would have armed themselves with something other than water canons by now.
Not to mention ppl like BlackWater and other firms that provide private maritime security are EXTREMELY expensive.
Remember that everything is not as black and white as it seems.
As for the oil and natural gas tankers, I dont think I want to draw fire by shooting at someone else while I sit atop a floating bomb.
-
They don\'t even need to hire security. Take the crew to a shooting range for a weekend and give them an AR-15 rifle. Problem solved. Spend maybe a grand per rifle. For added protection, they can put a 50 cal on the deck.

weapons on a non military ship = mutiny
-
Like I said, if it could be done by now, it probably would have been.
Plus these ships and cargo are heavily insured.

Guess that would put pressure on the captain not to mess things up in the first place :)

Hah, finally:

Takes one RPG to disable a multi-million dollar ship. Then there\'s the cargo.
Companies find it cheaper to pay off the ransom and get on their merry way.
-
Watch the video... For the big container ships just one of those containers can be worth up to $30M. 700-800 containers adds up, plus time wasted being hijacked. What a security team costs is pittance in comparison.
Or we could just \'splode Somalia

We need a small boat with the ultimate crew aboard:
Jackie Chan, Chuck Norris, Sylvester Stallone and Barrack Obama.
Coz we need a token black guy.

...see that\'s just not right.....wait that\'s not funny...the black guy would get killed first..

This is probably even more expensive than the option of putting security guards on the ship, but like a floating motorcade would work too I think. 1 or 2 smaller vessels escorting the prize ship, they\'d be quicker like the little pirate boats and could intercept them. Or we start cloning Jack Bauer.

Bam!
http://www.cnn.com/2010/WORLD/africa/03/24/somalia.pirates/index.html?hpt=T2
A pirate was killed and several others were detained after a security team thwarted an attack in waters off Somalia, authorities said Wednesday.
The incident happened Tuesday as a Panamanian-flagged cargo ship, the MV Almezaan, was headed to Mogadishu, said the European Union Naval Force.
A private security team that was on board the ship returned fire when pirates tried to attack the vessel. The security team was able to repel two attack attempts.
Told ya so!!

Wonder how much that cost them and the potential legal issues that may follow as well depending on what waters they were in.

Safety & security should matter more than money. If you can\'t protect the safety for your employees while on the job then you have much bigger problems to worry about.
Besides security & legal fees are a drop in the bucket to most of these shipping companies. They just want to make sure they can deliver their goods.
-
The people making all of the real money dont care one way or another about the safety of the employees for the most part. They are insured up the wazoo.
If they were, I suspect we would be hearing about more of these stories instead of more ships being captured.

http://news.blogs.cnn.com/2010/04/01/u-s-warship-captures-suspected-pirate-mother-ship/?hpt=T1
A U.S. warship sank a pirate skiff and captured a pirate mother ship in the Indian Ocean on Thursday, according to a statement from U.S. Naval Forces Africa.
The frigate USS Nicholas came under fire from a pirate vessel shortly after midnight in international waters west of the Seychelles, according to a U.S. military statement.
The Nicholas returned fire and pursued the skiff as it fled, capturing it about 90 minutes later. Three suspected pirates aboard the skiff were taken into custody, along with two others aboard a suspected pirate mother ship that was nearby.
Attacking a Navy warship? They\'re getting brighter by the minute

Captain Ugboo! I see a ship!
It\'s dark. Are you sure it\'s a ship and not a WAR ship!
Let\'s try the tracer bullets to check!
Great idea!
