Title: SheMue: Overhyped and overated
Post by: Paul on December 09, 2000, 03:03:58 AM
After waiting for all the fuss about ShenMue for what seems like years(ever since it was announced as a VF RPG years ago), i\'m deeply dissapointed by this game.

Sure, it probably has the most detailled 3D world in an adventure game yet but under all that hype is one helluva BORING game. Basically all you do is walk around looking for your father\'s killer in a most linear fashion ( side quest are not relevant to the game and I find feeding milk to a kitten on and off isn\'t particularly exciting ) and the puzzle..nahh..there isn\'t even any puzzle at all. You just get clue to where you\'re suppose to go and who you\'re suppose to meet next and basically you\'ll solve the game. I think they should at least try harder to make some simple puzzle.

despite what Suzuki-san says about F.R.E.E., i just like to add that nothing in a videogame world is F.R.E.E.!!! Like most adventure game, you can pick up and interact with certain objects but definitely not everything.

For example, if it\'s really F.R.E.E, why can I only take certain objects from the drawers and not others? Why can\'t i just grab a bicycle from the street(which seems to be loaded with them) and ride on it? Why can\'t I be nasty and bully little kids(and becomes...Evil Ryo in the process!!..getit? Evil Ryo! ).

Still, one of the nicest touch I find in the game is that each characters goes about their own business. Like the girl in the bar will go home early in the morning and the old lady who runs the flower shop will sweep the floor before closing the shop at 10:30pm and basically every named character is going about it\'s own routine which adds a degree of realism not quite seen elsewhere.

I think ShenMue is something you should experience for once but as a game, it\'s just NO FUN. I\'m having more fun with BOF4 on my battered PSX now.

I think Escape from Monkey Island beats the pants off ShenMue anyday as an adventure game.

I just recently got Shenmue and I think it is a great game. But, I don\'t think its a game everyone will enjoy. Its so different from others. Its more like a real life simulator with movie drama. Over-hyped? Not really. It has lived up to my expectations. Of course, it couldn\'t be totally F.R.E.E . The DC does have limits and the programmers didn\'t have forever to put in every possible thing. The game does allow you to skip meeting some characters and such.
Its a great game, IMO. But not everyone will enjoy it.

i agree.
when i first saw and read about shenmue it looked to be a real good game. I spent ages deciding whether to get a dreamcast or a ps2. i waited for dc to release shenmue, but to be honest it hasnt been what i thought it would be and i must say i am a bit dissapointed.
aw well.

How long did you play the game? Because if you say less than 2 hours, you are a joke. This game is VERY boring the first two hours. Than, you get ou t of Dobuita and get to go to a bigger city, join a biker gang, get a tattoo, etc. :) and if you like battles, there are alot more when the game starts to pick up.

As the F.R.E.E. argument goes. No game before has ever had this type of enviroment in which people do there own thing, you can do yours, and pick up, use, play with, MANY things in the game. And Shenmue will do only better :)

Here is a tip, play this game for bout half and hour after you get to leave town and you will thank me.

Well, I just made it past the old WareHouse 8. The game gets alot more exciting after the first disc.

Yeah, where have you been MM? We need "awards" for some people.;)

I\'m already on the 3rd Disc before I put up my opinion, so I can safely said it\'s not a hurried judgement. the game would have been more interesting if REAL RPG elements have been added to it. Shenmue could have been a great game if the designer have focus on the gameplay instead of the "nice to have but not neccessary" features.

Currently, i\'m much too busy with FF9 and BOF4 to be bothered with finishing the 3rd disc.

I think I\'ll come back to it on one of those boring, slow Sunday afternoon.

Yu Suzki is a mastermind of game designing. And while the game won\'t please everyone, because its so different from anything else, it is still a great game. Its a love or hate game in my opinion. No in bewteen. I love it. Great game. Can\'t wait for the sequel. But, I hate the FF series.

Paul, that is probably why you had bad impressions with the game... It\'s not an RPG. Thats the thing, it is it\'s own entire genre. You can\'t play it like an RPG waiting for random battles and magic and crap like that. This game is a toally, and better IMO, experience than EVER before. You are playing the game wrong.

It is funny how you say that though as my SonyFan friend actaully stopped playing FF9, what he calls the best FF yet, to play Shenmue for 4 stragiht days, skipping school twice, might I add, to play this masterpiece. Do\'t give up on it, that would be a big mistake.

Altered Beast: Yes, of course I know it isn\'t an RPG(but would have been much more playable if it has been one). it\'s basically an adventure game but lacks all the puzzle solving aspect of a good adventure game. The \'FREE\'(i hate that hypocrite term) battle is too few and far between. in fact, you don\'t even need to pratice much. Just button mashed your way through with the few simple moves and it\'s done before you can try anything else.

For all we know, the very word "ShenMue" could means BORING...

btw, I wonder how many copies of ShenMue has been sold so far? I knew it didn\'t do too well in Japan but I\'m wondering how many copies have they sell in the West.

Last time I heard, it took them 40 million(yen??) to develop this game. I wonder if they can even break even!

70 million dollars. They did not expect to make it back in the first installemtn. They are making 16 chapters, or probably about 10 different seperate games.

The games numbers so far are about -

350,000 Japan
450,000 America
Not out other places. I am betting it will sell 1 million easy though.

And, this game is pretty similar to VF, you can master moves, and use them in combat. This game is not about mashing your way through fights. It is about mastering the moves and performing in fights. You can get out the sissy way and mash trough fights, or you can use the moves and kick some butts. :)
