i liked some of the ideas of star trek when i started to get into astronomy, life on other planets, and stuff like that, but whenever i tried to watch it it\'d bore the shit out of me

but this movie does seem pretty action oriented so it should be fun to watch.

Agreed on Star Trek being boring... But I trust JJ Abrams so I\'ll check out the movie.

Maybe not until it comes out on Blu Ray though.

Speaking of upcoming movies... Heres one I\'m looking forward to.

No trailer yet.

The only star trek series that i\'ve ever liked was the series from the 60\'s...the cheesy lines and laughable fight scenes were entertaining....and capt. Kirk and Spock was the s**t back then! As far as the new terminator flick?...i was kinda ready to give up on the series after the last one...but this one here does look interesting, i also felt that this movie had a transformer type feel to it.

But that was mainly because of the huge robot that i witnessed in the trailer...could be good tho....that one robot now thinking it\'s human will put an interesting twist on the situation.

Wolverine will suck. Big time.

Watchmen will be mediocre at best.

Star Trek has potential.

Terminator : Salvation, should rock.

For what its worth, I thought Watchmen was pretty damn good; however, I could see people losing interesting if they haven\'t read the graphic novel.

Watchmen was awesome. They retained all the best scenes, and they weren\'t afraid to go for the full on R rating.
They didn\'t dumb it down for the mass audience. I don\'t care if some people don\'t like it.
I\'m just happy it was completed at such a high level of quality.

Star Trek was just from another time when people were more active with their imaginations and felt the need to explore the unknown and think of the possibilities therein.  Today everyone is just critical of everything and instead of wanting to go do, we spend too much time asking "why bother?"  You can see this in the TV shows that were on then, Out Limits, Star Trek, Twilight Zone and the cheesy sci fi/horror films of that day.  Today it\'s all about personal drama (fake or otherwise) on Survivor or the Bachelor or American Idol.

Don\'t get me wrong, I appreciate LOADS of TV on these days, but the generational gap is way too huge for so many to even appreciate what Star Trek is really about.  We\'ll see though with this new movie.  Maybe Abrams has the perfect method to present such old lofty ideas to a new generation.  We\'ll see in May.  I\'ll be there day 1 that\'s for sure.

And Terminator looks fantastic.  Haters be damned!

Two very cool looking Sci-Fi movies coming out this summer

The one that i\'m most excited for is Moon. I think it looks like it\'ll be great and i\'m a really big Sam Rockwell fan.

The second one is Distric 9. Which is a full film based on the short film, which I think we have had posted here on the forums in the past, Alive In Joberg. Heres the short film and the trailer for the movie is below it.

Yeah the computer is surely inspired by Hal. I haven\'t checked yet but it sounds like its the voice of Kevin Spacey, so thats a plus in my book. The computer seems to be a key character so hopefully they are able to have it as more of an homage to Hal rather than a copycat.

Moon & District 9 definitely look interesting...apart from me being a huge horror head,..i luv weird sci-fi joints. I was kinda hoping with district 9 that they kinda NOT show the aliens,...it gives a sense of mystery & uneasiness when you implement movies like this in that fashion....well that\'s the impression i got as soon as saw that massive ship, i instantly wondered.."what the f**k is in that thing?"

Showing the alien kinda takes away the suspense a bit, but i\'m still interested to see how it\'ll play out.

Star Trek ruled, I still have nitpicks

Why weren\'t they surprised to see the Romulans, they didn\'t know Romulans were once Vulcans, Balance of Terror hadn\'t happened yet.

There\'s one warp core, one big one

Why did the blast that blew them away from the blackhole not just get sucked into the blackhole?

hated the uhura romance, hated it

loved the orion chick, I would make awkward loving to that green ass

So Captain Pike will never meet the Talosians?

The Jellyfish looked cool but it was far to Star Warsian to me, Star Trek has over 40 years of cool designs to use as a base.

just a few of the top of my head...

as a former casual fan of the next generation series i will attempt to answer your questions
1. i thought they were surprised
2. i thought the matter and antimatter were stored separately. when he ejected both of those they met in the singularity of the black hole and blew up like how a nuclear bomb works
3. sorry, i didnt like or dislike it
4. she had nice boobies
5. um, no? i mean yes. wait, who?
6. jelly fish? if you referring to the ice planet thing. every time there\'s an ice planet in a sci-fi movie everyone will think of Hoth no way to avoid it

hope that helps

well, in Balance of Terror it was a major thing that Romulans and Vulcans were basically the same, should\'ve been a little "woah, a bald Vulcan, wtf?"

They are, but they are inert until mixed in the core, which is one big mutha and seen in just about every movie and every series. It\'s basically the defacto power source in Star Trek. Although Romulans are a little different, they use a forced quantum singularity to power their ships. There was a TNG episode about the problems caused by those.

The very first episode of Star Trek had no Kirk but a Captain Pike commanding the ship. They met the telepathic Talosians. Later in the original series after Pike was basically crippled after an heroic rescue Spock tried to take him back to the Talosions because they could use their telepathic powers to create the illusion of him being healthy and whatnot. However going to the Talosian homeworld was a capitol offense.

Since Pike only commanded the ship for about an hour or so, the very first Star Trek story never happened.

Spocks future ship, the spinning thing. It\'s called the Jellyfish and was designed by none other than Geordi LaForge. It\'s in the prequel comics.

Late Star Trek observations: (highlight to view spoilers)

I was expecting them to travel BACK in time through another black hole to reverse the destruction of Vulcan. I guess I was thinking too much, because when that didn\'t happen, it seemed a little disappointing. The idea of there being only 10,000 Vulcans remaining on a new colony is a big departure from the previous stories. Not that I care about that.

The production design on this film could have used a little help. The interiors of the Vulcan ship looked exactly like the interiors of the starfleet ships. I always pictured Vulcans as being a little more technically advanced. Also, the engineering section on the Enterprise  looked like some kind of huge water treatment plant. WTF?

I did appreciate that the starfleet crewmembers wore those goofy rumpled uniforms including the crazy boots. It was nice that they didn\'t try to update that.
Title: Upcoming Movies
Post by: Jar O Pickles on May 26, 2009, 01:27:30 PM
i read that they felt that the engineering section was always too slick and stylish , they wanted to make it more industrial
i liked that they tried to make it more of a natural progression of things instead of some unrelateable distant future
kansas still grows corn, people still use the golden gate bridge, people still drink beer, warehouses still look like warehouses

Post by: nO-One on May 26, 2009, 03:35:44 PM
Well, Vulcan design is very much also Starfleet design, so humans and Vulcans don\'t really have their own ships in that time.

Spocks ship wasn\'t even a Vulcan design, it was owned by the Vulcans but according to the prequel comics the ship was designed by Geordi La Forge.

I agree with you on the whole Vulcan survivor thing, I was expecting the same thing. It also changes things like... was Tuvok ever born now?

They also went too far with the look of engineering IMO. I agree that making it look more like a factory was a good thing, but it just looked like a water treatment plant. I would\'ve liked to see the warp core. Even though in that movie the ship had a bunch of them.

Loved the book of The Road.

Possible minor spoilers ahead...

Hearing that Charlize Theron was in the movie made me really question the films dedication to the book, but she may actually just be in flashbacks, which is good.

Just from the trailer, I question whether or not they\'ll be able to maintain the books level of tension and sense of doom throughout.

Heya Bob long time no see :D

Yeah I haven\'t read the book yet myself. From the reviews i\'ve read it seems even if this movie is above average its still not as good as the book.

Go read the book.

You should be able to breeze through it within a day, if you\'re dedicated.

prince of persia movie doesn\'t look half-bad. but itll probably disappoint.

the chick seems like a bad actress, but the gylinhall (sp?) looks like a decent pick for the prince

I will probably check it out. I actually really like Jake Gyllenhall and his sister Maggie. My 1 gripe tho, ummm isn\'t the prince supposed to be....persian?

Jerry Bruckhiemer? He ruined Batman. But he did apologize.

It sounds corny, like a little overly dramatic, but otherwise that looks like a decent flick. Seems to capture the game pretty well without being too terribly shallow like most game-to-movies. We\'ll see, I suppose. I\'ll watch it.

Also, I renamed the thread for you Joker. See, all you have to do is ask and then give us six weeks to click on the title and change it for you. :) Let me know if you want a different thread name.

Anyone see 2012?  Is it bad as the critics say or still somewhat enjoyable?

It is a completely stupid and predictable story, but the movie has two good things going for it:

Good casting - John Cusack, Oliver Platt, Woody Harrelson and Danny Glover were all pretty good.   Unfortunately the drivel pouring out of Chiwetel Ejiofor\'s mouth really ruined that character for me.

The other good thing is the visual effects of course.  This movie has many huge things destroyed in absurd ways.  It\'s just funny most of the time.

I would give it 5 out of 10, but it should have been a little shorter in length.

Aggh...why can\'t these big budget hollywood disaster movies be decent and full of depth? These types of movies always have great visual effects with poor scripting....Looks at "The day after tomorrow".

These types of movies always have some lame leading character being a really annoying and wimpy hero and there\'s always some 8-10 year old kids with dogs that need saving from somewhere that you KNOW will never die...seriously kids,dogs... oh yeah and the love interest of the main character NEVER die.

These type of movies for once should take a more realistic approach to these types of scenarios instead of being campy bulls**t.

Roland Emerich is the next Scorcese. The best part of The Day After Tomorrow was when Jake Gyllenhall outran the cold. The fucking cold man. He outran a temperature. Thats badass.

I\'m going to see New Moon this weekend. I thought the first one was pretty cool, but my girlfriend I think secretly rents it every other day, heh. She\'s dying to see this one. Hopefully the teeny bopper audience isn\'t too annoying!

Well I\'m not sure what you\'re talking about, but I saw the New Moon and it was almost unbearably corny. But, there was a decent movie in there somewhere. I enjoyed it overall.

I just rented a movie called "The collector"....great horror flick...and the gore and killings were gruesome and the suspense was amazing as well...

I also didn\'t think i would like "The Hangover",...but yo, i was rollin\' on the floor throughout that whole movie....incredibly hilarious...:D

I just rented 2012....and it is complete garbage...it\'s just as Core described. While the destruction scenes were entertaining, they ruined it with over the top hollywood bulls**t...the main character is driving through falling buildings and while everybody else is dying in the destruction, they are making it thru the chaos..(well it was the main character so you knew he wasn\'t going to die or be in any real danger)

And of course we have the innocent generic kids with the really weak and predictable romance plot....i saw the conclusion to this waaaay back in the beginning of the film...do not rent this pile of garbage...any dribble that comes out of hollywood nowadays is complete garbage, especially when it comes to controversal elements like 2012...i was kinda hopin for this movie to take itself a bit more seriously, but this movie is more of the \'ol hollywood campy bulls**t...

i had a feeling 2012 would suck ass the first time i saw the trailer. Just a bunch of crap falling apart and 0 story. And that was before transformers er something where I was already getting my fill of stuff getting blown up

Anyone seen clash of the titans? I thought it looked good, but the trailer\'s song helped a lot. Seeing if it\'s worth checking out in THREEEEEEE-DEEEEEEEEE

Another movie that was released about the same time is a little bit better:  Knowing with Nicholas Cage.  Yes, it sucks too, but man they really annihilate the Earth good in that one.  Yeah it blowed up real good.  :)

Haha....yeah i did see knowing and tru enough it is waaay better than 2012....but only because it took itself a bit more seriously and it actually made you think in terms of the earth\'s existence and who or what created us...
