Hostage captain rescued; Navy snipers kill 3 pirates
Navy SEALs rescued the American captain of a cargo ship held hostage by pirates on a lifeboat off the coast of Somalia. Capt. Richard Phillips had offered himself as a hostage in exchange for his men. "We saw the captain was in imminent danger," with an AK-47 pointed at his back, a U.S. official said. The SEAL snipers shot and killed three of his four captors, the official said.

As this thing was unfolding, i told my wife that sniping them was the only way to end this situation, especially since the u.s. sent out that battleship. And since this thing has garnered some Int\'l attention, the u.s. was kinda pressured to get this thing done right.
I gotta give it up to those snipers..they did their thing at NIGHT...with a lifeboat that was bobbling up and down and looks like it was enclosed all around. How the heck they popped all three of them is nothing short of amazing....all those hours of playing "Call of Duty" must\'ve payed off!!!...:D
Now i hear that the pirates are screaming retaliation....i say f**k \'em....these cargo ships should\'ve have armed security from the jump, why pay these a$$holes millions when some of these ships are actually supplying food and aid to the countries where these pirates are actually from....these a##holes just take the money and spend it on buying rocket launchers and machine guns while their people suffer.

Yeah this story makes me proud of our troops. These guys picked on the wrong country\'s boat this time. Still doesn\'t address the problem of security on ships in the region, though.

Isn\'t that what the Navy is supposed to be good at? You wouldn\'t even need to waste a missle or a bomb. Just send FA-18s and shoot em up with the guns. Sheesh.
It\'s not like Somalia is a close friend of ours or something.

Hmmm...i don\'t know core...while i do agree that folks need to hire armed personnel to deal with these idiots, these guys are basically low end criminals on a different scale. And while i do agree that the u.s. can wipe out the pirate bases, i\'m not sure if that\'s the best way to go....especially if other countries aren\'t involved.
I just don\'t think it would be a good look for the u.s. to be takin\' on people who are basically low end thugs of that country....it\'ll look kinda bullish,(well that may be goin\' a bit far).. granted these guys are walkin\' around with grenade launchers, but i think the u.n. and nato should be involved with something like this. I don\'t think we should have to do the job other nations are afraid to do. I say we continue to defend our cargo ships and interests and let everybody else fend for themselves...or continue to pay ransoms like they\'ve been doing.
I think that whether these big cargo companies like to admit it or not, they need to hire armed security. Yes they hijacked 4 more ships, but i think hiring armed personnel will deter some of that activity.

I don\'t see why it\'s so out of line to consider overwhelming military action against PIRATES. Their fucked up country is essentially lawless, no court or law enforcement agency in Somalia is going to stop them, and they\'ve now stated "We will seek out the Americans and if we capture them we will slaughter them."

The american public loves to see our military flex its muscles, and this is a rare instance where our technology and training could really shine. All you have to do is destroy their boats, and you can cripple them. I heard a military analyst state that even if we sent the entire US Navy to the region, we couldn\'t control the millions of square miles of ocean that are being affected. I say, that\'s what satellite surveillence is for!
We cannot defend all commercial vessels owned by american companies, but we can observe the pirates and attack them where they live.
Maybe this is more sensitive because Somalia is a muslim nation, but for fucks sake, pasting the word PIRACY over this situation gives us a lot of protection from that kind of rhetorical counterattack.

Hard to stop these butt pirates.
They ride around in super fast boats with RPG\'s, so every Captain is instructed to surrender to avoid major damages costs.

At first I thought the shipping companies need to install .50 cal machine guns on their ships, and hire one or two security specialists per vessel.
Then I realized that the companies are opening themselves to all kinds of criminal and civil liability whenever the weapons are used. They need to come up with complex rules of engagement, to avoid shooting up fishing boats or being sued by foreign governments.

It is illegal in many national waters around the world to have those types of weapons on commercial vessels.
Im also pretty sure, paying out these ransoms are actually the cheaper thing to do at the moment or they wouldn\'t be doing that either.
Hell, some celebrities can spend 500k a year on security pretty easily, imagine how much that number would multiply for these shipping companies.

Hmmm...it\'s crazy that these businesses KNOW that they are going to have to pay a huge amount just so they can get to their destination,...and these clowns are gettin\' paid millions?....:eek:...it\'s time for me to get my "pirates of the caribbean on" and infiltrate their ranks....a few hijackings and i could buy the island of tahiti.
